This week is a Thesaurus.com week folks. Harp and Clear both mean more than you think. Once again, no Opening Haiku from me to influence any thoughts.
New this week will be in addition to reblogging the first entry, there will also be a reblog of another member of the Haiku Family. Since the Haiku comes out at the same time, some of you don’t get that opportunity to write a Haiku in your sleep. So, I’ve decided to give a person a week, in addition to the first entry, a reblog here on Ronovan Writes. Make certain you check back here on your reblog for comments. They do get them.
Challenge #65
The rules are simple.
- Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com.
- The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
- Copy the link of your finished haiku URL in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. I will comment on your site. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put a link back to this prompt page, if you like within your post, as long as it does not take away from your haiku. This is simply a prompt and challenge to encourage people to try Haiku and give some a prompt and a place to share in comments so we can find each other. A link in your post does give others a chance to find us and join in. Use one of the two below if you like.
- Ping back Link https://ronovanwrites.wordpress.com/2015/10/05/ronovanwrites-weekly-haiku-poetry-prompt-challenge-65-harp-clear/
- Non Ping back Link https://ronovanwrites.wordpress.com/category/haiku-prompt-challenge/
- You may copy one of the badges/images appearing in this post below or above and place it on your site if you wish, most normally use it within their post. I am not saying you need to, but if you would like to do so then go ahead. It is simply my way of saying thank you for participating. I sometimes make custom images for the week, if time and health permits.
- The Challenge is currently posted at 8 AM New York City time on Mondays to give people a better chance than the old 9 AM time.
- Deadline is Noon New York City time on the Sunday following the Challenge Post release.

Harp is a challenge! I have tried to tie this in with a quote for today using a photo I took of swans on our local river. Thanks Ronovan!

Interesting choice of words. Harp & Clear. Clear seems a word easier to work with but I am not as certain about Harp. Will have to see what my mind finds rattling around connected to Harp. I love that you push the challenge to the intriguing places. TY again Ronovan for your imaginative creative temptations. On into the breach. Will see what happens when I post on Tuesday. jk 😀

Thank you. I was going to try to go easy and upbeat this week but it didn’t happen. And I even chose the words first, then wrote my Haiku, just to push myself. The Thesaurus.com link will definitely help with Harp.

Hi Ronovan. Attached is my link to what was a challenging prompt. https://haikuhound.wordpress.com/2015/10/06/sweet-sounds/
I had to search my photo files but came up with an idea for the original words. Sticking to 3/5/3 English, its growing on me. Cheers, Denis

Great challenge! I couldn’t work with harp…so have used its synonym – ‘dwell’. ‘Hope thats ok. Here’s what I came up with:

I encourage people to use a synonym. It often makes their Haiku stand out. And the synonym can add another layer of meaning as the synonyms of that word may not be the same as the very first/original word. Add depth. And you actually nailed one of the words I was hoping people would use for harp. 🙂

I wasn’t in the mood for harp as a verb although I see people have done a variety of great things with it. I stuck with a musical theme–wrote from a sound/visual image in my head and was lucky to find a video with a compatible sound and beautiful nature pictures–the haiku is called ‘Tournier Morning’ because the composer is Tournier and his piece is “Au Matin”. It was lucky that “clear’ fit so well with harp because I almost forgot that it was a prompt word (an almost oops) 🙂

I’ve already entered and I’m not sure if this is even a haiku, what with rhymes and being a direct address, but it fits the syllable pattern and uses the prompts: Oh, don’t harp on so / Your mind’s clear by now, you know: / If it matters, Go!

In addition to the translation, which is not a haiku, the Japanese haiku is titled to give the English reader a deeper sense of its meaning.
