FRIDAY FICTION CHALLENGE

Welcome to Friday Fiction with Ronovan Writes. A weekly writing challenge from me, Ronovan Hester, host of the Weekly Ronovan Writes Haiku Poetry Prompt Challenge, now in it’s second year and going strong as of the writing of this description with an average of around 50 poets each week and a community of over 70 active members.

I love poetry, but fiction is my first and foremost passion. With decades of writing behind me and daily learning how to be a better writer, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well. Now with one challenge building experience I’m ready for this one.

Writing a book and publishing it doesn’t mean your good. It may mean you are determined, but getting to your greatest level of quality and storytelling comes with time, practice, and feedback. For some, it takes years to find that natural writing voice because they’ve been trying to write like other authors. If people want to read writing like that other successful author, they will read that other successful author.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will find your voice, step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies, or perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer.

Foremost, enjoyment is the goal of our time here.

Now to the specifics.

Each Friday I’ll post the prompt.

It may be one or a combination of the following:

A list of words in which you choose a designated number of to include as main parts of your story.
A photograph or art piece you are to tell a story from, or whatever the prompt suggests.
A song that once either listened to or simply from the title itself you write whatever inspires you.
A quote that either inspires or must be used in the piece.
A Haiku that you then spin off into a story, either about, well that’s up to you or whatever the prompt prompts.
And whatever else I may come up with to keep things interesting.

A word count may or may not be designated. This is a way to have you gain control over your writing if the word count is significantly limited, or learn to expand your abilities with dialogue or sensory descriptions if the word count is larger.

THE PROMPT WILL BE PUBLISHED

At 04:00 EST on Friday. (Why that odd time? It gives people from Australia to Great Britain an opportunity to see the challenge on Friday.)

WITH A DEADLINE OF

23:59 the following Wednesday. That will give me Thursday to complete reading and reviewing the entries and compiling the links and such, much as I do with the Haiku Challenge Review now. I will also comment with critiques on those entries who ask for it.

I DO ASK THAT YOU

Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue to #3 for exceptions.)
No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying.
If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of the Friday Challenge Post I put out and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language. I don’t use profanity in my works but I ‘m not here to handcuff anyone. I know there are times a character will say something a certain way otherwise it comes across as fake.
If you do go beyond PG, please don’t do the ping back, that way no younger readers will accidentally visit your post. But do mention the challenge. For the immediate future this is not a contest of any sort. This is a community to encourage growth and development.

THERE IS A FORM AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE TO GIVE PERMISSION TO INCLUDE YOUR ENTRIES IN FREE E-BOOK ANTHOLOGY FORM. (Also referred to as the FREE eBook Project-Fiction.)

The form is not necessary at all to participate. However, I am considering putting together anthologies, free ones, on Smashwords and then Amazon in e-book formats of some of the entries. Amazon price matches, and in order to have Amazon price the eBook Free permanently, I’ll use Smashwords first which allows Free from the beginning. If you want give this a try fill out the form and agree to it. (Words in red added on 11/21/2015)

This will help avoid any monetary complications. If that ever came about then a new form would be put out, but I’m not seeing that being the case.

All the talk about the form and anthologies is to cover just in case scenarios. I want the possibilities to be out there from the beginning. The putting together of the anthologies would be held to professional standards with, hopefully, donated talents from the community, with those people being mentioned as perhaps cover artist, proof reader, and things like that. This would be a way for those included to have their writing seen by a larger audience (HOPEFULLY) and bring attention to the blogs of said entrants. Just so you know, these would NOT BE weekly Anthologies. It takes time for a professional and quality book to put together.
