The Soundtrack of My Life

The Soundtrack of My Life
by: Ronovan

When you go through the history of your life you hear music, or at least I do. Music isn’t a big part of my life these days. After suffering an injury during the previous year I can no longer handle sounds and live basically in silence.

In my mind music plays at various times when I write. Some of which I am not sure where it comes from but others bring a flood of memory and a pause as I think about those times.

The first song of significance to me I believe would be ‘In the Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins. It’s a piece of storytelling and I am drawn to that in music. Of course this also flashes one back to the days of Don Johnson in Miami Vice when the song was used. The show was a very good marriage of music and television. It was cool to not wear socks with shoes and you pushed up the sleeves on your jackets, no matter what kind of jacket it was.

As my taste in music matured, although I believe Phil Collins counts as maturity in music, I fell hard for the Beatles. Name a song and I imagine I loved it. Even if it was not a hit, a rarity, there was something there that you could learn from. ‘Eleanor Rigby’ is a song that really brings a mood to me. Again storytelling is what launches me into another time and place right from the first lines. If only some of my writing could match that.

Many, many years later my life changed and my music listening turned to Christian music. I was tired of the junk of the world influencing my mind in negative ways and decided to fill it instead with positive messages of hope and goodness.

The song ‘Walk by Faith’ by Jeremy Camp is another storytelling. One most personal that he wrote on his honeymoon in his early twenties while his new bride was going to die of cancer, which she did. Jeremy was angry and questioning. But he just gave it to the Lord and that’s the only way he could carry on, the only way he could put one foot in front of the other, he would ‘Walk by Faith’.

My life has had the twists, turns, and falls that would make many people Walk Away From Faith, but I don’t. Two things that stay with me each morning when I wake up are the Word of God and His Love. I don’t talk much about religion in my writing but I’m not ashamed of it, my life verse is Romans 1:16 if that tells you anything.

Music carries us through certain times of our lives as it is needed. Certain music is given to us at those times to help us through. At first I thought it would be impossible to write this and just pick three songs, and then just three songs stood out, with an honorable mention I could add…who doesn’t love ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ by Simple Minds, and for me these days it’s a little ironic.

God put music on the earth with the birds’ song, the ocean waves, and even the frogs at night. I cannot wait to hear what the ultimate band will sound like someday.

What’s the soundtrack of your life?

    • Thank you. I almost picked Long and Winding Road because it was number one the week I was born. Here Comes the Sun means. Fool on a Hill could really hit home. There were some Eric Clapton Unplugged moments that really hit as well.

Hate to say it but Puddle of Mud were a bit of fun back in my old days.

      • I actually enjoy Puddle Of Mudd occasionally. Blurry is an excellent song. I find “She Hates Me” hilarious and true somewhat. And I head-bang to “Control” when I feel a bit of rage. 🙂

  1. Wow, very beautifully described Ronovan. Mine was plain and I just said about the song and what I loved about it , but your post actually conveys why it adds a certain meaning to your life and that is what the post is all about. A lot to learn from your writing. Thanks 🙂

  2. Didn’t everyone go through a Beatles phase? I like “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”… And I love the thought that certain pieces of music are given to us to help us through specific times of our lives – glad you shared!

    • Thank you! I actually used to teach a History lesson each year about the ‘Paul is Dead’ thing and Sgt Pepper lyrics and Album Cover. It was to show how you need to do your own thinking and research and not just listen to what you’re told.

  3. I like how you wrote about your evolving taste in music and how you say it matured.

When you put it like that, it makes me wonder, is there music you don’t listen to anymore because it isn’t mature enough? I know that’s the case for me…I have this ‘secret’ playlist I only listen to when no one else is around to avoid weird looks when I sing along enthusiastically 😉

    • 🙂 I suppose most people have that list, the guilty list. Reread my first paragraph. That might tell you about my music these days. 🙂 But in the perfect world, as long as the lyrics were of taste and told a good story I suppose I would give it a chance. In a perfect world.

  4. Ahh yes music….whole novels can evolve from just one inspiring line. All music is poetry connecting our hearts and souls to one another. “In the air tonight” one of my all time favorites. Always gets the mind rolling and the heart trembling 🙂

    • Imagine, after almost three hours of a Phil Collins concert, you’re exhausted and you decide to leave to avoid the madhouse of traffic. You walk across the dark parking lot and suddenly you hear it “In The Air Tonight”. You stop and just stare at the sky and let all of that exhaustion go. An amazing moment.

      • Imagine this…. I was living in San Francisco on 7th ave about two blocks from Golden Gate park. I left my apartment at about 9:00 pm in a rage, which was directed at my boyfriend at the time. I had made my mind up to leave him and move back home to Hawaii. On foot headed towards the ocean always my go to place…. happy, mad or sad. I hear music in the distance as cigar smoke starts to mingle with the smell of ocean spray and salty sand. I look up at an apartment window where a man sits quietly singing along to “In The Air Tonight” he nods at me, takes a puff of his cigar and says “be careful out there.” Major chicken skin…..didn’t walk home. I ran home 🙂

          • haha….It was the moment. I’m known for my not so safe late night walks alone to mostly nowhere. Sometimes it’s a smell or a sound that knocks me back to reality….umm this may not end well, and I do a walk/run back home 🙂

  5. That was BEAUTIFUL! Your writing style is simple and straightforward, but you put your thoughts across so well. I hope to learn from you.

As for the music, the story behind Walk By Faith is heartbreaking, and it’s such a poignant piece. Thanks so much for sharing.

  6. Eleanor Rigby is such an intelligent and well crafted song, lyrically and musically. Such a good choice. I love the Beatles. I’m sorry to hear about your hearing problems I have a similar thing going on. I started to listen to Walk by Faith (I’ve not heard it before) but got all emotional after reading about his wife. It sounded really good though. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Those are some great music choices (and they’re all “real” music, lol). I especially appreciate the Phil Collins choice, I’ve always loved the drum build at that one part (I’m sure you know the part I mean). I really like how you went from the past to the present and brought in a deeper meaning and significance to the post.

    • Thank you! We mature in many different ways as we grow. And things fall into our lives at certain moments of need. Music is one of those things.
