Unskinny Fat-Self Image Insanity

Unskinny Fat. Anorexic. Muscles Me Not Got. I’m not sure what you want to call it, but self image of women, especially the young these days is wearing thin on me. Is that at pun? Not exactly. It’s a fact. I’m ticked at what society has done to generations of females.

A society sitting on its own big derrière tries to dictate to females what they should look like or what the perfect body image is like getting celibacy or relationship tips from a Kardashian. It’s just not worth it.

Unskinny Fat-Self Image Insanity

~~~
Just a quick note: There are no images in this article. Why? Because I don’t promote an ideal image or even humilite someone that is an example of Unskinny Fat or Unfit Skinny. Some people can’t help what they are, some can. I’m not here to judge. Be happy with it. Now on with the article.
First of all, do you know what Unskinny Fat means? Perhaps Unfit Skinny is a better way of putting it? Now you probably are getting on the track of my crazy train mind. You see there are people out there who lose weight to be skinny, duh, right? But how do they do it?
One way is to stop eating or eat next to nothing. Lose weight? Yes. What are they losing? Muscle. So what is left? Fat. So yeah, you’re going to fit into those clothes you want to but you aren’t going to look fit. You’ll me squishy and unhealthy and there is a good chance you will die if you aren’t careful.
Then you have the Unfit Skinny that lose everything and are just bone, anorexic. I’m not going to name any celebrity names because I’m just not like that. But just pay attention and you can see them.
The Unskinny Fat and the Unfit Skinny just don’t look healthy. There are slim/skinny women that look healthy.
Men and women in the fashion magazine world need to put the airbrushes away and get real. The number one sex symbol is still Marilyn Monroe. Get a hint people. Men enjoy women of every size and shape. I want a woman that is healthy and happy not miserable in her own skin.
Do you not what really causes problems in those people that are heavier than those magazine people? Stress. It’s a killer. Why is there stress? Because they are concerned about their weight. There are people in this world that are ‘overweight’ but healthy. I’m not saying go out and be overweight and be happy, I’m saying go out and be healthy not insanely into body image.
Here are some statistics from the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders:
  1. 95% of all dieters will regain their lost weight within 5 years
  2. The body type portrayed in advertising as the ideal is possessed naturally by only 5% of American females
  3. 69% of girls in 5th-12th grade reported that magazine pictures influenced their idea of a perfect body shape.
  4. 81% of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat
  5. 20% of people suffering from anorexia will prematurely die from complications related to their eating disorder, including suicide and heart problems.
Ladies, let me tell you something. I love you alive. That’s the way I want you. I want you healthy and with strength. Let’s be honest here, I don’t want a weak woman, in any sense of the word. If you have friends that think you need to look a certain way, they’re not your friends.
Oh, you’ve heard that before? Do you think maybe that’s because it’s the truth? Read the statistics up there. Go down the path that leads to death or down the path that leads to a healthy, happy and beautiful you. It’s up to you.
This is not a scare article. This is a I love you article. “But, Ronovan, you don’t know me.” Hey, are you human? Do you have feelings? Then I know you. If you were in front of me with a car coming would I let you die? No. Why, because I love you. I see this train wreck waiting to happen with people with this insane body image thing. I have to speak or it’s just like watching the car hit you.
But you know what? Driving a road with curves is a whole lot more exciting to me than just traveling down a straightaway.
Much Respect
Ronovan
  1. Ron, I need to loose 25 kg to be considerd a healty BMI. Currently I’m drinking 1 slimmers shake in the morning for 5 days of the weeks. I feel less hungry and feel more pretty since I lost some weight, but I won’t get into a Bikini infront of people – I’ll just go swim with a T-shirt on. I’ll still have curves if i manage to be my ideal weight. I have always had curves, and I love my sexy courvyness. Too much though, lets just be real does not suit me.
  2. I work with young women, many with body image ‘issues’ and some with eating disorders. It is insidious! Thank you for providing an alternate male perspective.
  3. I think using the word “diet” in the real meaning of the word might actually help. Diet – Greek diaita, “a way of life, mode of living.” I feel like people read the word “diet” and associate it with “weightloss” rather than just a way of living/eating!
  4. Over the past few years, I’ve really been fascinated by how physical health, psychological health, and spiritual health are intertwined. My advice to most people: eat right (every body is different–no diet fits all) and exercise, practice love and compassion, and take the time to find peace in your life… it will all shine through. It doesn’t matter how skinny or unskinny you are. It’s all about health and happiness.
  5. Ron, you’re amazing. I wish more people, both men and women think like you.
    I read in Friday that because of this skinny girl image, a lot of girls are suffering from bulimia. It would actually call it a disease because the effects are so drastic.
    It can only stop if we stop portraying the skinny girl image. Marilyn Monroe is the perfect example.
    This touches my heart!
  6. I would probably fall under unfit skinny because I am a bag of bones that no matter how much weight lifting I do, it doesn’t change a thing. People call me anorexic, bulimic, etc. I get asked every time I go to the doctors if I have an eating disorder – in fact if it’s not the first question it’s usually the second. I also get told to eat a damn burger – which I do , mcdonald’s every day actually. I get told that I look like an 11 year old. I get told to eat more. I get told to put some meat on my bones. Tons upon tons of things I get told on a regular basis. Does it bug me anymore? No, not really. If you catch me in the wrong mood though, be prepared to feel my wrath because I absolutely hate the skinny stigma – I’ve just gotten so used to it I don’t bat an eyelash anymore. I get asked how I can even eat a burger because of how tiny I am – as if my size dictates the food I eat.
    • Love this comment. I had a friend that just couldn’t gain weight. The doctors even told her to start drinking shakes with every meal. Even to this day she still looks exactly the same. And her adult daughter is very similar. I think a lot of people look at someone who is thin, like you, and since their eyes are so accustomed to a “Big Society” (oooo new article topic and Title) they instantly think a thin person is a eating disorder person instead of actually looking at the person and the details. I’m a big guy, but I look at a person.
  7. It is so good to see a man verbalize this. I am not skinny and have a history of “self image insanity.” I am now 30 and I really feel as if I have found myself in the last couple of years and I have learned some enlightening things along the way. This standard of beauty that women feel pressured to live up to is media created, and men do love women of all shapes and sizes. I have learned that every woman is beautiful, and if every woman embraces her beauty this is what men are attracted too. Not that attracting men should be the woman’s primary goal in her self image, but it’s ironic no? I especially love the last lines! Thank you.
    • Thank you for commenting. I wish it didn’t take so many years for some people to break free of the media driven goals and realize healthy is what is the real goal. People think having a few pounds is unhealthy, and it can be, but a big part of pounds and unhealthy is the stress of knowing there are pounds, a need to lose them, and knowing people are looking at you a certain way. Happy is Healthy. If you can be happy then that can lead to healthier habits in eating as well.
  9. Loved this post Ronovan, I don’t think women hear this enough. As a matter of fact it goes beyond us women. I read an article a fitness trainer wrote earlier this month – she’s 5’9″ and 170 lbs, and she appears thin in her pictures but because of the BMI she is classified as obese. A fitness instructor . . . obese?! And what hit home for me is that I’m 5’9″ as well and have only been 170lbs once . . . in my college years, and I was semi-depressed because I was and have always been obese by the BMI standards.
    Obviously it’s time to change the way we view weight and fitness and health.
    We need a healthy outlook on health!
    • Lee Haney won 8 Mr. Olympia Body Building titles and had around 1% body fat or even less. He was considered obese. Women were created by God to be the most beautiful creation on earth. Curves, no curves, whatever shape, height or shade, as long as they are healthy, that’s all that’s important.
