Ovi Poetry Challenge 64: THINK is your inspiration.

I have to tell you that people not thinking is a huge stress factor of mine. With politics… it’s a HUGE pet peeve. I’m not sure why people don’t read information and come to their own conclusions instead of being spoon fed. But maybe that’s just the History Teacher in me and knowing you should ALWAYS check at least twice before leaping. Sometimes you still have to leap but at least you do so knowing what you might be leaping into. And it’s not just politics. People will believe anything these days if it’s in a well done meme.

OVI POETRY

Ovi is a syllabic/metre poetry form. In this case, Ovi is from India, originating in the Marathi language. The Ovi  has been in use in written form since the 13th Century, but the women’s ovee/ovi predates the literary form by at least the 12th Century.

The Ovi are in general, lyrical folk songs expressing love, social irony, and heroic events. They are written in the following scheme.

4 line stanzas, as few as one stanza and up to as many as you like.

8 syllables or less per line

Rhyming is AAAb. The second stanza would be CCCd. The third, EEEf. And so on. Meaning nothing in one stanza must rhyme with anything in the previous stanza. The fourth line does not rhyme.

Example:

Roly Poly by Judi Van Gorder

The big toothed tot with golden hair
picked up a bug on Sister’s dare,
it rolled into a ball right there
and won her springtime heart.

Notice the rhyming pattern is AAAb or
A
A
A
b

My Attempt

Blue flowers continue to grow,
with the shadow’s making them glow,
giving life to darkness and woe,
dying each year to yet return.

  1. I too used to wonder in the last ten years why so many people do not think .
    Asking questions when in doubt
    Allow new ideas to sprout
They in turn let us speak out
    Feelings and thoughts within us.

There are changes as we grow
These changes help us to know
There is much more than what is on show
All the more reason to think.

  2. The history of the Marathi language is a testament to its enduring legacy and cultural significance. From its ancient origins in Maharashtri Prakrit to its role in shaping modern Maharashtra, Marathi has evolved into a vibrant and dynamic language. Its rich literary tradition, coupled with its deep cultural roots, ensures that Marathi remains an essential part of India’s linguistic heritage.
