FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (Continue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence (See below for clarification.), sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR WORK OF FICTION: (The below guidelines are less than they appear, I’m just thorough.)

Prompt for Challenge

FIRST OF ALL: Please remember, this is NOT a race. Take your time. Friday is only a part of the title, not a deadline. SECONDLY, if the story is flowing, don’t let the word count stop you; keep writing. THIRDLY, if you are an ACTIVE challenge participant and you just aren’t feeling the prompt, write something and ping back or paste your link. I’ll still include it in the #Links post the following Friday.

  • See if you can come in at more than a Word Count of 300. Control your word usage. (SUGGESTED-Because some are doing a series and may need more.)
  • Using the prompt of ‘Epic Fail‘, WRITE. An Epic Fail is when something intended does not work out, in the worst way. (REQUIRED)

For proofreading of your work you might check out Grammarly.com. They have a free option to download for Word or that will even work right here in the WordPress Post Editor. It also works in the comments of sites. An additional feature is you can turn Grammarly off and own for each site you visit.

*Use the 52 Week Photo Challenge hosted by some of our Haiku Challenge friends in unison with the above prompt words. This week’s photo prompt is Outline. Click HERE to see the full 52 prompts. And yes, EXTRA can be used with the Haiku words, although I didn’t plan it that way this week.

The Guidelines are simple.

  1. Use the two prompt words in a Haiku. I use Haiku in English  as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above gives you more specifics of a Haiku and other forms of Haiku.
  2. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help. I’ve also included the words at the top of the page.
  3. Copy and paste the URL link of your finished haiku post into a comment here on the challenge post. I then know you did one, and we can all go visit your site to see what you have done. You can also do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put the URL link from the address bar of this post, if you like, within your post. Your inclusion of the link encourages others to try the challenges out, be creative, and join a community to find friends and more followers (hopefully).   • See if you can come in at more than a Word Count of 700. Control your word usage. (SUGGESTED)
  • Using the prompt of ‘A Friend Shows Up‘ create a scene. This scene about a friend arriving at an embarrassing or perfect time. It could be, if a series is being written, a new friend we haven’t met before that changes the dynamic of the story. (REQUIRED)

  • Using the prompt of ‘A lie is told’ create a scene. This scene can be about what happens because of the lie, or how it makes the person lying feel, or anything you can come up with. If a series is being written, like some are doing, this lie can come back later to haunt the liar. (REQUIRED)

FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

 

 

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (Continue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence (See below for clarification.), sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

Prompt for Challenge

FIRST OF ALL: Please remember, this is NOT a race. Take your time. Friday is only a part of the title, not a deadline. SECONDLY, if the story is flowing, don’t let the word count stop you; keep writing. THIRDLY, if you are an ACTIVE challenge participant and you just aren’t feeling the prompt, write something and ping back or paste your link. I’ll still include it in the #Links post the following Friday.

A spill occurs, what do you do next?
Use your imagination for what a spill is. Click HERE for the Thesaurus for spill.

  • See if you can come in at more than a Word Count of 600. Control your word usage. (SUGGESTED)
  • Using the above scenario, create a scene about a spill of some kind and what you happens. Is it related to you, to someone around you, the world, love, death, sports. Get creative. (REQUIRED)

For proofreading of your work you might check out Grammarly.com. They have a free option to download for Word or that will even work right here in the WordPress Post Editor. It also works in the comments of sites. An additional feature is you can turn Grammarly off and own for each site you visit.

  • Please use the tag of Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge with your posts, if you can remember. That way if links/ping backs don’t work I can find you. I saw about 5 or 6 people used the tag this past week. Unfortunately, they were not the ones that missed linking back to us.
  • Check your links you are using in your posts. Some are not working. If you are like me and like to copy a post from the previous week and just change what’s needed, check the link you may be using that’s built in.

Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge Image 2016

The Guidelines are simple.

  1. Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above has links within it to articles about how to write Haibun, Tanka, and even a new form I created called Freku. You can also do the 3/5/3 form if you likeinstead of the 5/7/5 that I usually use. Write, share, and have fun. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com. (You would be surprised at how many syllables some words actually have.)
  2. The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
  3. Use the Tag of Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge. This will help me find you in case you forget to ping back or leave your URL in the comments.
  4. Copy the link of your finished haiku URL  in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put the URL link in the address bar of this post, if you like, within your post. Your inclusion of the link encourages others to try the challenges out, be creative, and join a community to find friends and more followers (hopefully). I honestly gain nothing by more people visiting the post. I don’t have ads running I get paid for by your visit. Click HERE for a detailed article on Ping Backs.
  5. You may copy one of the badges/images appearing in this post below or above and place it on your site if you wish, most normally use it within their post. I am not saying you need to, but if you would like to do so then go ahead. It is simply my way of saying thank you for participating. Prompt for Challenge

FIRST OF ALL: Please remember, this is NOT a race. Take your time. Friday is only a part of the title, not a deadline. SECONDLY, if the story is flowing, don’t let the word count stop you; keep writing. THIRDLY, if you are an ACTIVE challenge participant and you just aren’t feeling the prompt, write something and ping back or paste your link. I’ll still include it in the #Links post the following Friday.

You’ve just been handed a message that makes you drop to the floor, trembling uncontrollably.

  • No more than a Word Count of 600. (SUGGESTED)
  • Using the above scenario, create a scene of what the note is about, and why it makes you react the way you do. (REQUIRED)
  • No external dialogue for this scene. (SUGGESTED)

Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge Image 2016

The Guidelines are simple.

  1. Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above has links within it to articles about how to write Haibun, Tanka, and even a new form I created called Freku. You can also do the 3/5/3 form if you likeinstead of the 5/7/5 that I usually use. Write, share, and have fun. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com. (You would be surprised at how many syllables some words actually have.)
  2. The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
  3. Use the Tag of Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge. This will help me find you in case you forget to ping back or leave your URL in the comments.
  4. Copy the link of your finished haiku URL  in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put the URL link in the address bar of this post, if you like, within your post. Your inclusion of the link encourages others to try the challenges out, be creative, and join a community to find friends and more followers (hopefully).   5. You may copy one of the badges/images appearing in this post below or above and place it on your site if you wish, most normally use it within their post. FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

Ronovan Haiku Poetry Challenge Reviews , , , , , , , , ,

Well, you’ll notice the sad state of the Review this week. The reason? A father practicing a rousing game of catch before the upcoming baseball tryouts with his son. A very HARD thrown ball hitting of the glove reaching across the body … from that point onward, it is not certain if the ball went directly into my eye or hit a fence then went into my eye. However, reading is difficult and holding an ice-pack on the eye makes typing difficult. But two awesome things … 1) My son can throw one heck of a fast ball, and 2) All I yelled out was a yell and a Oh Gosh. I was quite proud of myself that my habit of no use of profanity in my language usage came through in that moment. My son was happy too, after he was assured I would survive.

FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

Prompt for Challenge

FIRST OF ALL: Please remember, this is NOT a race. Take your time. Friday is only a part of the title, not a deadline.

February 5th is National Wear Red Day, or Shower With a Friend Day. There are much more serious International Days the 5th is set aside for, but the challenge at this point in its growth is not a place to explore those quite yet. Although I’m not stopping anyone. If you know of another National/International Day you want to write about this week, go for it.

  • Word Count of 500. (SUGGESTED)
  • Some great stories were written last week. Continue those stories this week! (SUGGESTED)

OR

  • If you are not writing a series then It’s National ? Day and you are in charge of the party. Create your own National/International Day and spread the news. (REQUIRED if not in the middle of writing a series OR doing the above Suggested Prompt.) You can always mention a national day in a series.

For proofreading of your work you might check out Grammarly.com. They have a free option to download for Word or that will even work right here in the WordPress Post Editor. It also works in the comments of sites. An additional feature is you can turn Grammarly off and own for each site you visit.

Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge Image 2016

The Guidelines are simple.

  1. Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above has links within it to articles about how to write Haibun, Tanka, and even a new form I created called Freku. You can also do the 3/5/3 form if you likeinstead of the 5/7/5 that I usually use. Write, share, and have fun. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com. (You would be surprised at how many syllables some words actually have.)
  2. The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
  3. Use the Tag of Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge. This will help me find you in case you forget to ping back or leave your URL in the comments.
  4. Copy the link of your finished haiku URL  in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put the URL link in the address bar of this post, if you like, within your post. Your inclusion of the link encourages others to try the challenges out, be creative, and join a community to find friends and more followers (hopefully). I honestly gain nothing by more people visiting the post. I don’t have ads running I get paid for by your visit. Click HERE for a detailed article on Ping Backs.
  5. You may copy one of the badges/images appearing in this post below or above and place it on your site if you wish, most normally use it within their post. Sorry for the confusion last week with the posting of the Challenge on Sunday for a few hours. Never blog with very little sleep. I went hunting for those who participated last week and I did not have a link for to check and some had participated and some I could not find an entry for. If you missed out because of the error, and would like to be included in this Review, post a Haiku and I’ll update the Review when I wake up. 🙂 As soon as I saw the post had gone out, I took it down to keep as little confusion out there as possible. Some figured out I had goofed. We still had over 60 responses, even with the foul up.

I wanted all those who participate, my friends and Haikumily, (I know Haikumily sound corny for Haiku family but that’s what it is around here in this growing community.) that as we grow, I know I have not been able to be as personable as I used to be, but don’t let that make you think I don’t appreciate all of your dedication to this thing Y’ALL have made such a huge thing. (For those who don’t speak Southernese, Y’all is Southern American for You All, or All of You.)

INSPIRATION

MUST READ 1000hoursleft (Mek): For Pho’s Sake | Work In Progress. This, so far in my doing the review, is my favorite overall read of a post. Mek used words to describe the experience of creating Pho in such a way you could feel, smell, and experience it yourself. I only wish I could taste it. Two Haiku mixed in with the post, added at just the right moments made this a complete post. I placed this in INSPIRATION because it inspires the desire to experience things like this.

Elusive: The Saxophonist | Elusive Trope. Play that funky music white boy. Actually this one deserves a more serious comment than that. Using trill in this way was inspired and also telling of personal enjoyments. Haiku can be very telling about the writer.

OBA: Dreamland Vibes | The king’s oracle. A bit of a nice rhythm to this one as you read it. @obapathway

MUST READ Pancake Bunnykins: Last Breath | A Real Messy Beautiful Twisted Sunshine.  I’m putting this in MOMENTS, but it could easily be in LIFE, or NATURE. The word choice and writing allows for such a wide interpretation. Only the image used leads me to be specific in the placement. For those visiting this blog, the like button is to the left of the top image. A little different than the usual theme’s we visit.

Marie: Empty Playground | The Syllabub Sea. I missed typing the letter l in ‘playground’ the first time through, not sure if that is telling of something or not. This one gives me a sad feeling of a devoted teacher’s thoughts. Maybe that says something about me. I get that hollow sad feeling when I think about having once been a teacher but unable to remember.

Olga:  Memories of Childhood | Stuff and what if. See the thrilling transformation of this trilling product of a nun. Say what?

jazzytower (PR): Fun Endings | Thoughts and Entanglements. A bit of a, um, play on words for the title there from me but I like it. A good memory shared. Well nice to have it shared.

Kat: On the Wing | like mercury colliding. At first glance of the title I was concerned this might be a recipe. Then of course I read the actual Haiku itself and the interesting fact that went along with it. @kat_myrman

TJ Paris: Sunset |La vie est trop courte pour boire du mauvais vin. A feasty boy writes as poem, and his ships come sailing after him. Or is that chips? And what’s that about a prawny tiger? Aussie people have some strange anjimals. Then there was a pelican too? @Roccoco_a_GoGo

Ken G.: Spring’s Herald | RIVRVLOGR. Very nice Haiku and enjoyed the selection of image here. I’m wondering about that one fellow at the top though.

MUST VISIT & SEE Denis: Trilling Seagulls | HaikuHound. Guys, you MUST go and see this. The photography here of Australia at sunset is AWESOME!!! I always love Denis’ photos of his pet and all the birds he comes upon, but the birds are secondary in these. Makes you want to get up and make a trip.

Janice: Evening tweets | Ontheland. I like the tongue in cheek of that title. But the two Haiku are even better. And where else but NATURE would you find Janice? @ontheland1

Kim M. Russell: Evensong | Writing in North Northfolk. You have to like those Haiku that can be read as one sentence or two separate ones. @kim88110

Cathy: Winter Haiku | Rambling in the Garden. I climatic telling of the UK Midlands. It’s nice to see similarities between nations and people in things as simple as the weather. This matches what happened here this past weekend, much to the displeasure of my son.

Al: Sunset  | A Certain Point of View. Interpret this one how you may. How many ways can you? Will you go with the straight forward obvious, or obvious to most, or will you think outside the box? @AlistairLane

MUST READ JustMaria: Earth’s Cry | Doodles and Scribbles. (Why do I use JustMaria? Because we have other women named Maria in the challenge AND I first met Maria as JustMaria. Although there is nothing JUST about her.) When I saw the title in the link, the first thing I thought of was how when the earth begins to tremble for whatever reason, earthquake or some other cataclysmic event, birds let out a call of warning, alarm. They are like the cry of the earth to let other living things know something is happening. Maria came up with another idea and a lot more poetic too.  @ciisalveni

Roz Hill: Hardened Harmony | Small Spaces and the good life with Roz and Phil Hill. After some snowl searching, (It’s an inside joke, inside of me that is.) we have a nice Haiku with a photo that would be good for using in a story. That’s one reason you check out blogs, for reference material.

Janice: Canaries in the Coal Mine | Ontheland. I knew, of course, what this one would be about as soon as I saw the title. Then I read the rest of the post. The post itself had to do with the Writer’s Quote Wednesday hosted by Colleen of SilverThreading.com and the #BeWoW (Be Writing on Wednesday/Be Wonderful on Wednesday) event hosted by me. A good read. @ontheland1

Crow: Poem 20160128 (Forward Thinking) | Caw!.  As always the words are my title contribution. A programmer but I wonder if there is a gardener inside this one. @Crow

Melissa: Snowdrops/Winter Sky. | The Aran Artisan. Some of you may know what her titles mean, and some of you will be completely wrong. Melissa and one of our other Haikumily members, Sandra the Daffy one, helped compile this years list of ‘photo word of the week‘ challenge. @TheAranArtisan

Mira: Free | They, You and Me. Awww, she went NATURE on us. Very nice. Peaceful @BediMona

Lisa Greenbow: Gardens and Haiku | Greenbow. Nice Haiku with nice photography from the other half.

Becky: The Hills are Alive with the … | Becky G? Oh, That’s Me! When you read this one, you know you’ll finish that title.

VronLaCroix: Fence near an Oak | Simply Snapshots. The cool thing about this is what the fence is made of. Here, in America, you would rarely find this. Rarely, I said. I did not say not at all.

FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

FIRST OF ALL: Please remember, this is NOT a race. Take your time. Friday is only a part of the title, not a deadline.

  • Use the first line of one of your favorite song and begin your story with that line. (REQUIRED)
  • Word count of no more than 300. (STRONGLY SUGGESTED but I don’t want you to let it get in the way of creativity.)

For proofreading of your work you might check out Grammarly.com. They have a free option to download for Word or that will even work right here in the WordPress Post Editor. It also works in the comments of sites. An additional feature is you can turn Grammarly off and own for each site you visit.
