With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

Prompt for Challenge #9

FIRST OF ALL: Please remember, this is NOT a race. Take your time. Friday is only a part of the title, not a deadline.

Ticks and tocks of essential time, sink the spirits lower than wine.

  1. Include the above sentence somewhere in your work of fiction. (Required.)
  2. Keep your word count at no more than 500 words this week. (Suggested.) Do NOT let your story suffer because of the word count limit. Remember, it is a suggested part of the prompt.

Some of you are now yelling at me. This can be a clue, an incantation/spell, a part of a poem, an ad a character reads in a paper or hears on the radio/TV, or just about anything. We often make using a prompt a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

Something to keep in mind this week is to proofread. Before you hit publish, spell check your work. Then read your work again, line by line. Seriously. One thing to do is to take your writing in a Word document and make each sentence a line all its own. There would be no paragraphs. By reading each line one at a time, you will see mistakes easier. I for one know the word you’re has been missed by two authors several times, when it should have been the word your. That could have made it to the published version.

Prompt for Challenge #8

Boab treeUse the photo above as inspiration. This is a Adansonia gregorii or boab tree found in Australia. I see a lot of possibilities for stories from this one, ranging across genres. This week, don’t worry about word count and let the mind go where it wants.

I know some of you are doing a series, but I can see how this tree could fit in with the stories that are ongoing.

It’s been a couple of weeks and now it’s a brand new years. This week:

  1. Try to write a humor piece.
  2. No word count limit.
  3. Pick at least three of the following words to include: dog, cat, toy, fever, ski, fluffy, machete, purple drink

Challenge This Week: Write about a family gathering. I know that sounds like non-fiction but by writing pieces like this you tap into emotional and sensory experiences you use for other writings. An example of this would be a short piece I did quite some time ago called My Ocean, My Lover. No Word Count limit this week, just no book lengths please.

PROMPT FOR CHALLENGE #5

Challenge This Week:

    • Pick your favorite song and use the title for the title of your story. No, you are not to write a story about how you like the song.
    • Get rid of adverbs outside of your dialogue.
    • No word count limit this week.

A Song Example:

Just The Way You Look Tonight-A Story.

What are adverbs?

Things like:

He walked quietly down the street.

Now, adverbs are not always bad verbs. Adverbs can be okay to use, but normally you can do without them. Your writing becomes tight, precise. The more adverbs you have the more likely you’ll lose the feel you are going for. If you use adverbs, put them in dialogue.

He walked down the street with the hope no one would hear him.

Not the best example of changing it, but along the lines of what I mean. Walking quietly does relay how he is walking, but it doesn’t give a sense of why he is walking that way. In the revised sentence you do get a sense he’s afraid of being heard. The previous version gives the impression of someone who walks quietly.

PROMPT FOR CHALLENGE #4

Flash Fiction this week. Some of you are probably thinking that’s what you’re doing already, and for some that’s correct. Flash fiction is only a few hundred words long, or even under 100 words. What Flash Fiction does is forces you to make your writing tight. Tight writing is removing the fat and leaving the healthy stuff that has energy to it. Fat slows your storytelling down.

I am looking into Amazon’s policies, but I know Smashwords allows eBooks FREE all the time, not just a price matching feature. But if I find Amazon is Free from the beginning, then we may go both routes to allow all our friends a chance to read, not just those with Kindle or Kindle apps for eReading.

The last two weeks we’ve had words to choose from to use in our works of fiction. This week there is a picture provided. Use that picture as the inspiration for this week’s work. It’s obviously an airplane on a runway. But that’s all I’m saying.

Friday Fiction with Ronovan Writes Challenge

FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are:

  1. you will find your voice
  2. step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning how to be a better writer, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

How to Write Haiku Poetry Focus For The Week: I think we will keep working on the two sentence structure, but if you are already there regarding that, work on the opposite meanings of the two sentences. If your first sentence were about life then the second would be about death. Something like that. Remember, both focuses are just suggestions.

Proper Haiku structure is forming two complete sentences from your three lines. The middle line of the Haiku is the common line for each sentence. For sentence one, it’s the end of the sentence. For sentence two, it’s the beginning. Check my example below to see what I mean.

How to Write Haiku Poetry Focus For The Week: If you aren’t already, and you don’t have to if you don’t want to, work on proper Haiku structure in forming two complete sentences from your three lines. The rules are simple.

  • Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, but you can use what you like.
  • The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning.
  • Copy a link to your finished haiku  in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. I will comment on your site. You can do a pink back, put a link back to the prompt page, if you like within your post, as long as it does not take away from your haiku. I would do it at the very bottom near where one normally puts the copyright. But I am not encouraging anyone to do that. This is just permission to do so. This is simply a prompt and challenge to encourage people to try Haiku and give some a prompt and a place to share in comments so we can find each other.

As a tribute to the very first Haiku challenge, yes that would be #1 from one year ago. Below is a Retro look at what you would  have seen then, prompt words and all, except for the image and the link information in red below the image. Five people participated in that first Haiku challenge, and although we now how over 40 poets each week, and not always the same ones, only one poet remains from that very first challenge to this day as a participant.

I want to thank Meredith of Meredith’s Musings for being there that first Challenge Week and being here today. I’m not certain how many she’s led to this challenge, but I appreciate everything she’s done. Love you Meredith! Expect to see her Haiku entry this week appear as a reblog here on Ronovan Writes.
