Media, Massacres, and Madness
by: Ronovan
Why do we have so many mass murders of late? Blame the media.
There are so many reasons given for why someone writes a note or letter, suits up movie or video game style and then finds a crowded place to unload on. Ultimately what it comes down to in my opinion is they want the attention or fame.
Enter the media that is happy to give it to them.
Do I mean that they are happy to report such events? No, but you know the ratings rise and so do those behind the scenes. Not even the most professional reporter can hide how they feel about having to report on these situations. They are as disgusted by it as we are. Yet they report it and we watch it.
You will have news agencies say “We must keep the public informed of the situation”. The person is in custody and has been for five hours. Nothing but news has been on for that entire time. What are you informing us of?
How about the media flip it?
Break in for five hours about something amazing someone did. Promote the positive of the world. Sure, give us a blurb about the negative, but let that be it. Give the lime light to those doing good in the world. In other words, flip it from how it is done now.
If people want the attention then maybe they will start doing some amazingly good things to get on the news instead of violence.
In the past I always received blank stares when I mentioned why not doing this or that for good. Why not make a community one that promotes good over bad. And this was in a church. Perhaps I’m just naïve about things and try and act on what I believe we should do in society. Speak only what will help build another up and let no foul word come from my mouth.
Sure it’s good for us to know about the bad, but not to promote it.
Enjoy your day by tuning out the news. Read a book, listen to your favorite music, enjoy the outdoors, but whatever you do, don’t help promote the madness.

Its an amazing post Ron…and your point is so true…media does influence people a lot so instead of promoting bad media we should actually try to promote the good work of others…In India every other news channel show crime show based on true events…its full of negativity…but there is one show which also showcases crime shows but only those where victim took action and showed bravery…which is little bit inspiring…Great Post Ron

Thank you! 🙂 A big problem is that people watch those types of things and thus send a message they want to see it.

Could not agree more with this post. Remember in the day of streakers, when they would find a way to get on a professional sports field and run across the field for all the world to see, but the announcer would say “We are not going to give this idiot any of the publicity that he is looking for, we will come back to the game once security has everything under control”. Nowadays, just wait 30 minutes and you can see it ALL on YouTube or Facebook. Have yet to read a story about a dad taking his son to the ball field to try to teach him how to throw a curve ball and then stop for ice cream on the way home. Who would want to read about that!?!?!?

I think you cannot blame ONLY media. So many people are hungry for bad news, that is why the bad news are as popular as fast food which is – we all know – is harmful and still, we all eat it. But I agree, media should take responsibility for creating madness around ‘being famous whatever is costs’.

Thank you. I’m not only blaming the media but that was the them of the article. People obviously have issues that come to the fore and then the media jump on the fall out. But I do believe that media reporting and the sensationalizing of everything negative has had some adverse affects on society.
But no one thing is to blame. I just think the media is one thing that could easily be fixed if they wanted to.
Much Respect and thank you for commenting. 🙂 I enjoyed it.

Violence in the society is a very complex topic, and you made a very good point. By the way, just came to mind, Michael Moore in one of his documentaries shares his opinion about why media prefers bad news – because it puts people on the edge of panic and allows to control and direct public opinion.

Media does definitely control a lot. I see it more as a on the edge of panic in order to keep them watching and coming back for more to find out what’s the next bad thing they have to watch out for.
