Drift Away.

I always love coming across interesting facts. When those facts are associated with music, it’s that much better. The song Drift Away, the most famous version being by Dobie Gray, was written by a man named Mentor Williams. The song has been covered numerous times, and in 2002 was performed by Pop Culture Stuff on Ronovan WritesUncle Kracker featuring Dobie Gray. That version reached the Top 10 and Dobie Gray set the record for the longest number of years between Top 10 hits at 30 years. The same song also topped the Adult Contemporary Charts for 28 Weeks, setting another record.

All of that is wonderful and interesting, but should not be a surprise coming from Mentor Williams, the writer of the song. Consider this, his brother won a Grammy, Academy, and Golden Globe award for the love Evergreen, the theme from the movie A Star is Born, a Grammy for best Children’s Album with The Muppet Movie, from which I had to sing Rainbow Connection at my 6th Grade Graduation, and as recently as 2014 won a Grammy Album of the Year, and is obviously a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The sad part of it all, for all that talent, most of the world knows this man as Little Enos from the Smokey and the Bandit movies.

Yes, Mentor Williams is the brother of Paul Williams.

The song here, Drift Away, was a songwriting breakthrough for Mentor. He learned through this song to allow his emotions to spill over into his lyrics. Every person will take from a song what they like, what they want to. I have my takeaways. Almost every line makes sense to me in parts of my life. I repeat, ALMOST every line. Some obviously don’t, but that “I want to get lost in your rock and roll” takes on a meaning that if you really listen, I think you can interpret quite well.

FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

Prompt for Challenge #10

FIRST OF ALL: Please remember, this is NOT a race. Take your time. Friday is only a part of the title, not a deadline.

January 22, which is Friday’s date, is Celebration of Life Day.

  • Take a moment in your life of which you would celebrate and use that as inspiration for a no more than 750 word story, but don’t let that stop you if you are enjoying yourself and the story is going well. (SUGGESTED)
  • If you are not doing a series, write the story as if the characters were animals living in the roles of humans. An example would be the policemen might be German Shepherds and other Police type dogs. (REQUIRED if not in the middle of writing a series.) OR
  • Use the same experience for a story in one of the following Genres: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Thriller. (Required if not using the above.)

For proofreading of your work you might check out Grammarly.com. They have a free option to download for Word or that will even work right here in the WordPress Post Editor. It also works in the comments of sites. An additional feature is you can turn Grammarly off and own for each site you visit.

Friday Fiction with Ronovan Writes Prompt #9 Entries: THE LINKS

21 Entries this week and 21 unique entries at that. We have everything from Contemporary to Science-Fiction, and Middle Grade to Adult. I noted two as Must Reads based on either uniqueness or impact of story. All the stories were good and worth reading twice. I say that because I do read each one at least twice. I wouldn’t if the story was bad.

The order appearing is the order in which the entry was received.

GL below stands for the reading Grade Level. Harry Potter is a GL of around 5. Tolkien is around GL 6.5.

Passive Sentence percentage is included as Active Sentences are considered the preferred form of writing by most editors and publishers. Active moves the story along. Passive is not always bad. Sometimes a story works that way, perhaps through the language of a person or the type of story. Even then, keep the percentage low.

I don’t believe in coincidence. Here is a story of fiction based on true places and people, if not the actual people of the story, but those living in the same conditions. This story is in the Philippines. What is strange is how this story mirrors a book I reviewed for my LitWorldInterviews.Com site. In that book is a city and a people living in the exact same conditions as the people in this story, but in Guatemala instead. No coincidences. Two stories coming for some reason. I also interviewed the author of the book and you can read the interview HERE. I don’t normally link to other people’s work in a review but this story hit pretty deep. 1658 Words, 6.8 5.4 GL, and 11% Passive Sentences.

Hugh's Weekly Photo ChallengeI don’t normally do Photography challenges. When I saw Hugh’s prompt this week I could not resist, and I waited until Thursday for it to be a throwback moment as well. Here I am, my yearbook photo from the University of Georgia. Stripes? If you have to ask where the stripes from Hugh’s prompt are in this photo then you are color blind and very fortunate. I still have this shirt 20+ years later.

The Guidelines are simple.

  1. Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above has links within it to articles about how to write Haibun, Tanka, and even a new form I created called Freku. You can also do the 3/5/3 form if you likeinstead of the 5/7/5 that I usually use. Write, share, and have fun. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com. (You would be surprised at how many syllables some words actually have.)
  2. The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
  3. Copy the link of your finished haiku URL  in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put the URL link in the address bar of this post, if you like, within your post. Your inclusion of the link encourages others to try the challenges out, be creative, and join a community to find friends and more followers (hopefully). My mind keeps breaking, while my heart is anticipating,
The feeling of you.
Do you feel it too?

Sitting here I don’t know if I can ever know more, will I ever say more,
About this feeling for you?
It deepens so true.

Lovers don’t know if they are meant to be, in the way of a melody,
Sung from the heart.
Can you feel it start?

All the cards and stories tell a tale, but we all know the truth is frail,
When words are real.
I can’t sit still.

Love is calling for me from so far away, I want to scream and say,
I’ll be there soon.
Do you hear this tune?

Speaking words from the heart, you know when to start,
But when to end?
Before you say what you cannot mend.

Here are five Haiku. And the name’s meaning will be obvious as soon as you arrive. If not, I am speechless. Also, has anyone noticed how awesome Clarence’s writing is? I mean I know we all know it is, but from those first days to now? Wow. The man has let his mind go and written his little heart out. Fearless.

Paul WinterDo you know Paul Winter?

A lot of people know him without knowing him.

You’ll know him from one of three different reasons.

The Paul Winter Sextet was a cultural ambassador to Latin America for the United States State Department. They spent 6 months performing throughout Latin America and were greatly inspired by what they heard, especially the Bossa Nova music in Brazil.

On November 19, 1962, the Paul Winter Sextet set up on the stage of the East Room of the White House. Down the hall was the President, unable to attend because of the Sino-Indian War, between China and India. It was on that day a cease-fire was declared and the air support from the US that was on the way for India was called back. Although JFK could not attend, it is said he could still hear the music.

The first ever Jazz concert at the White House occurred at the invitation of Jacqueline Kennedy in her series of Concerts for Young People by Young People and 10- to-19-year-old children of diplomats and government officials attended. It was said the First Lady could barely sit still.

“Simply wonderful. There has never been anything like it here before.” Talking to the 23-year-old jazz sextet leader from Altoona, Pa., Mrs. Kennedy said, “I think it’s so great to see you up there.”-The New York Herald Tribune, Nov. 20, 1962

Other than the obvious first for a Jazz concert, the integrated band showed a change moving through society. The band had problems while traveling in places like Miami and even Utah when the Black members of the group were not allowed to stay in the same hotels as the others. The band would then move on until they found another place to stay, if possible.

The Paul Winter Sextet eventually became the Paul Winter Consort. If you are a fan of space, astronauts, or the Apollo program you may know it was his third album, Road, that was taken to the moon by the astronauts of Apollo 15. Two craters on the moon were named after two songs from that album, Ghost Beads and Icarus.

In 1971 the Paul Winter Consort struck gold in producer George Martin. The George Martin of Beatles fame. The he landmark album Icarus, which was released in 1972, which George Martin described as “the finest album I’ve ever made”

Paul Winter is one of the pioneers of what has become known as World Music. He combines music styles from around the world as well as including the sounds of nature, such as bird song.

The streets of Galway were gray that night. Everywhere I looked, gray buildings, gray sidewalks, gray sky, beneath a mist that floated inward from the Atlantic and hovered ominously, casting contrasting coronas of light upon the sidewalk from the interior lights of the handful of pubs still open in the midnight hour. Our footsteps echoed as we walked from The Kings Head to the hackney office on Dominic Street, right across the street from Taylor’s, which was Kieran’s favorite pub. Kieran used Taylor’s as if it were his personal office, and many was the night he summonsed Darren and Shannon and me to the pub to talk business because Kieran never did see the line between work and play.

Were it any other night, the four of us would have gone into Taylor’s; we would have sailed through the door in Kieran’s wake, following that proprietary swagger of his as he made his way to the section in the back designated for Irish traditional musicians. But this evening had been exhausted at The Kings Head. It was beyond time to call it a night, and I had to get home to Inverin. Click for the rest of the story on TheWildGeese.Irish.

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

Prompt for Challenge #9

FIRST OF ALL: Please remember, this is NOT a race. Take your time. Friday is only a part of the title, not a deadline.

Ticks and tocks of essential time, sink the spirits lower than wine.

  1. Include the above sentence somewhere in your work of fiction. (Required.)
  2. Keep your word count at no more than 500 words this week. (Suggested.) Do NOT let your story suffer because of the word count limit. Remember, it is a suggested part of the prompt.

Some of you are now yelling at me. This can be a clue, an incantation/spell, a part of a poem, an ad a character reads in a paper or hears on the radio/TV, or just about anything. We often make using a prompt a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

Something to keep in mind this week is to proofread. Before you hit publish, spell check your work. Then read your work again, line by line. Seriously. One thing to do is to take your writing in a Word document and make each sentence a line all its own. There would be no paragraphs. By reading each line one at a time, you will see mistakes easier. I for one know the word you’re has been missed by two authors several times, when it should have been the word your. That could have made it to the published version.

Here is the final of a Big Three I have been doing.

The Final is the other mainstay panelist of the hit game show What’s My Line?. A show that you needed to be on when promoting any entertainment coming out or going on. Class, with ties, dresses, and manners. Witty patter, friendship, style, and credentials. Here is the anchor of the panel itself, the co-founder of Random House Publishing, Bennett Cerf.

A good deal of Cerf’s time was spent playing nursemaid to some of his more temperamental authors. Among the writers in that category was Sinclair Lewis. Lewis said, ‘Certainly not. Cerf has stayed relevant to this day through his son, Christopher Cerf, know for his over 300 songs for Sesame Street and being a force behind the PBS series Between the Lions, a series teaching and encouraging reading.

Sharing a real story the way only my friend author Claire Fullerton could.

Many of you have been visited by Claire and if you haven’t you will. And if you think the name sounds familiar, it should. She’d probably truly go Southern on me and like, shoot me if she knew I put her picture and one of her book covers on here, but I thought that might remind some of you about her. She was my number 1 Contemporary Read of 2015. I loved her book so much I made her become my friend.

The Guidelines are simple.

  1. Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above has links within it to articles about how to write Haibun, Tanka, and even a new form I created called Freku. You can also do the 3/5/3 form if you likeinstead of the 5/7/5 that I usually use. Write, share, and have fun. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com.   2. The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.

Writing Motivation.

Why do you write? What’s your motivation?

Money?

Fame?

I read an article recently that included a comment about a writer’s motivation and it began the hamster running like mad. Smoke started coming out the auricles of the cabeza. The article didn’t quite go in the direction I’m headed today, but as with all articles about, I got something out of it and ran with it.

When I write, I have something to say. Sounds a bit obvious, right? All authors have something to say, but some will roll over and compromise out the wazoo in order to be published. Once you begin that compromise process, you’re doomed.

There is going to be a certain level of give and take, and editing, but you need to stay true to what you are. If you don’t, you will be miserable. At least I find myself fighting inside when those moments come up for me.

What is my motivation?

I always like to have believability in my stories. Then I like to find ways of using words, sentence length, and sentence structure to denote mood and tone, rather than using profanity. Now, you may say, and I say it too, that some people in certain situations are going to use certain words. If you are creative, you can relay that to the reader without resorting to actually saying it.

With my debut novel coming out, sooner or later, I say sooner or later because my co-author and I are first and foremost devoted to a quality product, it’s in editing now, but with the book coming out soon, You’ll see two styles of writing blended together. Those that have read the book can tell what writing is mine. That is not saying either writing is better than the other, but the two combined to give each other’s what the story needed to some extent.

There may be a word here or there I would not have used, but then that is part of the collaboration. I fortunately have a partner who knows me and how far I am willing to go.   And the words used aren’t the profanity type.

My motivation is to give information, a lesson, some type of message, insight, hopefully a different take on things, and to put voice into the story. That is one thing you will have difficulty with, keeping your voice. Again, those who have read the book say they hear me in the book. My partner, PS Bartlett, has done a good job of not overpowering with her own style by changing things. And we go back and forth about certain aspects to make certain things flow properly.

Deep down, I am not after fame or money. I would like to someday, make a living as a writer. I don’t mean a big house, or lots of vacations, maybe a couple of vacations a year, to a beach I could drive to and have a nice little house big enough to provide what’s needed.

I want to people to think of me as a great writer, with a genuine voice they recognize when they read it, and have a confidence when they see my name on the cover of a book that the book will be a good read.

I’m not 100% positive what happens after Amber Wake-Gabriel Falling, as far as my writing. I have a book in the somewhat editing stage right now. It’s a contemporary, literature, romance, Sothern, New Adult thing based here where I live in places I’ve been. And several others in the seasoning stages that I will be returning to after the debut drops.

One thing, one piece of advice I’ve read that I agree with is, authors become successful not by the marketing they do, but by the writing the do. The more they write, the more quality books they get in front of the readers’ eyes, the better the author’s chances of success becomes.
