You discover a quote in the oddest of places. Bret “The Hitman” Hart is a former professional wrestler and author from Canada. He rose to fame in what is now known as the WWE. He was around during and after the time of the likes of Hulk Hogan and Randy “The Macho Man” Savage. He was even chosen by Andre the Giant to wrestle the headline match on a stop of a European tour. This was a sign of respect by the big man.

Recently Hart announced he was battling prostate cancer. He’s had a lot of hard knocks over the past decade or two. His brother, Owen, died in the wrestling ring from a, I’ll just go ahead and say it, stupid gimmick stunt used to give the fans a thrill in the WWE. It wasn’t his brother’s idea. Then he suffers a stroke. Now this. In his announcement he said the following.

Mark Helprin wrote: “We are all perfect clocks that Divinity has set to ticking when, even before birth, the heart explodes into a lifelong dance.” I’ve had a great lifelong dance and I’m a survivor of many hard battles.-Bret Hart.

Of course, I had to go find out who Mark Helprin is. He’s a writer born in Manhattan into an entertainment family. Now he lives on a large farm that he actually works himself.

One thing that brought attention to Helprin was his stance on copyrights of an author. Pretty much he believes it should extend as far as Congress can make it go. Apparently, bloggers hit back at him for this. I’m wondering exactly what his wording was, or who these bloggers were. Even I, as a blogger, want my work protected, whatever work there may be.

The quote is a bit out there in some part. It comes from the book Memoir from Antproof Case. A book with a 3.97 rating on Goodreads out of over 2,ooo reviews. The book sounds like it covers every possible experience wrapped up in one man’s life.

It just goes to show you not to stereotype people. Bret Hart delivered this quote to a ton of people. Lots of us grew up watching him. He’s a legend of the wrestling entertainment industry, and not because he had a loud mouth or wild character. He could actually wrestler and do his job.

Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge Image 2016

The Guidelines are simple.

  1. Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above has links within it to articles about how to write Haibun, Tanka, and even a new form I created called Freku. You can also do the 3/5/3 form if you likeinstead of the 5/7/5 that I usually use. Write, share, and have fun. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com. (You would be surprised at how many syllables some words actually have.)
  2. The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
  3. Use the Tag of Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge. This will help me find you in case you forget to ping back or leave your URL in the comments.
  4. Copy the link of your finished haiku URL  in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put the URL link in the address bar of this post, if you like, within your post. Your inclusion of the link encourages others to try the challenges out, be creative, and join a community to find friends and more followers (hopefully). Well, you’ll notice the sad state of the Review this week. The reason? A father practicing a rousing game of catch before the upcoming baseball tryouts with his son. A very HARD thrown ball hitting of the glove reaching across the body … from that point onward, it is not certain if the ball went directly into my eye or hit a fence then went into my eye. However, reading is difficult and holding an ice-pack on the eye makes typing difficult. But two awesome things … 1) My son can throw one heck of a fast ball, and 2) All I yelled out was a yell and a Oh Gosh. I was quite proud of myself that my habit of no use of profanity in my language usage came through in that moment. My son was happy too, after he was assured I would survive.

A stitch in the eye!

I had intended to enter the Photo Challenge hosted by Daffy and Melissa for Stitch this week, and I am going to use what I planned to. The only thing is, there is an addition and a reason my own Challenge won’t have a detailed review. A bit difficult when you have to keep an ice pack on and your eyesight is a bit blurry. Below is the offender.

My son has baseball tryouts next Saturday, and I felt good because of my book being available for pre-order. So I thought I would go outside in the nice fresh air with said son and throw, or actually catch the ball, since he needed to practice throwing. I would underhand toss it high in the air for him to practice. That was easy for me to do. I actually did a good job at catching, until … well …

Below is the Offended.

This is the eye about two hours later. I am not showing you the whole area. I thought the color alone of that nice, first black eye in my life, along with that green tinge would be nice to see.

Apparently the ball tipped off my glove and hit a fence behind me, then hit me square in the eye, or round in the eye. But there it is. I yelled in pain once, and said ‘Oh, Gosh!” according to my son. Pretty proud of myself. Goes to show not using profanity or any bad language since the day I found out he was to be born paid off.

FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

February 5th is National Wear Red Day, or Shower With a Friend Day. There are much more serious International Days the 5th is set aside for, but the challenge at this point in its growth is not a place to explore those quite yet. Although I’m not stopping anyone. If you know of another National/International Day you want to write about this week, go for it.

  • Word Count of 500. (SUGGESTED)
  • Some great stories were written last week. Continue those stories this week! (SUGGESTED)

OR

  • If you are not writing a series then It’s National ? Day and you are in charge of the party. Create your own National/International Day and spread the news. (REQUIRED if not in the middle of writing a series OR doing the above Suggested Prompt.) You can always mention a national day in a series.

Talk about a great prompt idea. This one, or something like it, may show up again. Wow. Some great entries. If you’ve never read the entries of these Fiction Reviews before, start with this one. They are short, and very good.

A Must Read designation does NOT mean an entry is necessarily better than the other entries. It means that entry clicked with me in some way in that moment I read it.

The order appearing is the order in which the entry was received.

GL below stands for the reading Grade Level. Harry Potter is a GL of around 5. Tolkien is around GL 6.5. Passive Sentence percentage is included as Active Sentences are considered the preferred form of writing by most editors and publishers. Active moves the story along. Passive is not always bad. Sometimes a story works that way, perhaps through the language of a person or the type of story. Even then, keep the percentage low.

The Prompt for the Challenge was:

January 22, which is Friday’s date, is Celebration of Life Day.

  • Take a moment in your life of which you would celebrate and use that as inspiration for a no more than 750 word story, but don’t let that stop you if you are enjoying yourself and the story is going well. (SUGGESTED)
  • If you are not doing a series, write the story as if the characters were animals living in the roles of humans. An example would be the policemen might be German Shepherds and other Police type dogs. (REQUIRED if not in the middle of writing a series.) OR
  • Use the same experience for a story in one of the following Genres: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Thriller. (Required if not using the above.)

I’m not certain I’ve ever had an error free entry before. Whoa. I recommend you listen to the song used for this one, even if you aren’t a fan. I did. Excellent. 292 words, 4.0 GL, and 3% passive sentence structure.

You’ll never guess what this one is about from the title, and it may even take you several lines in to figure it out. 283 words, 8.7 GL, and 7% passive sentence structure.

A Must Read Ruby Manchanda (Whispering Thoughts)
This short story could be about a young man in many parts of the world … during so many different eras. I enjoyed the simple quaintness of this, if that’s the correct way of saying it. Something peaceful about it in a strange way. Strange because in a way it shouldn’t be peaceful. 239 words, 5.2 GL, and 5% passive sentence structure.

Okay, this guy is a serious writer. But I knew that already. The way he links together the lyric and that ending … nice. 248 words, 7.0 GL, and 6% passive sentence structure. @billmelaterplea

To the Stars-Robots on the Loose! #Photography

Not long ago I was doing some photo shooting of a sight that occurs in my Southern Romance. I wanted some pictures I could use to capture the true imagery of the place. I love old tin toys that really do work. So does my son. He passed this one up because he had a specific toy in mind he wanted on this trip. I was going to enter this in a photo challenge of one of my friends but I was a bit too late. Instead I think it fits well for Throw Back Thursday type post.

Tin Toys of the type I’m talking about came into being around the middle of the 1800s from Germany. Original Tin Robots are some of the most sought after. Obviously this is not one of those. Click HERE for a great article about the history of Tin Toys on a site I found.

The photo was taken with my little LG phone.

If this guy is around the next time I make it through there, I think he’ll be coming home with me.

As many of you know by now, I like to watch old TV shows. On one such show called This is Your Life, Petula Clark, the song goddess of England, was being honored. One man, who was a child star with Clark, was filmed for the event, not able to be present in person. That man was Songwriter Hall of Fame member Anthony Newley who would pass away three years later.

I chose Anthony Newley for todays #BeWoW post for his charm, elegance, and dignity to his craft and others. He represents a time long gone, when even the celebrities who were not at the top knew how to act in public and be respectful to others. Even the rock stars of his time knew respect.

Anthony Newley was an early influence on David Bowie, but that legends recent passing did not influence this selection. I only discovered that fact a few seconds before typing this sentence, long after making the selection. However, when listening to recordings of Newley from the early to mid ’60s, I do hear the sound some speak of.

Anthony Newley’s legend has fallen by the wayside for many. Perhaps not so flamboyant as to seek out the spotlight, he did his magic where it mattered most.

There are many types authors. Some are writers of books, of poetry, of newspapers. Then there are the writers of songs.

In 1996 Newley spoke the following words on the This is Your Life special I mentioned earlier.

“In a profession where little boys with dirty t-shirts are called stars, it’s truly reassuring to know that there are real stars like yourself still with us.”-Anthony Newley to Petula Clark.

Slippin’ into sideways single again, thinkin’ I know what’s the best thing for my friend.
Never seein’ I’m the one playin’ a fool, keep trippin’ into a funk deeper than a city cesspool.
Do you ever think you want your own time, oh but you keep missin’ when she’s out of your line?
Then you look into her eyes, her heart and you play it off like a chump, thinkin’ you’re so cool.

Love’s not a playground for the child or the immature clown painted on society’s scripted scene.
Expectations of your world can bring you down to your knees and shatter your deepest dreams.
Where do you go from here when all you know is the beaten down lovers lost melody hit machine?
