through simian eyes

she can almost see freedom

from behind cold bars

from behind cold bars

kind voices spur her dreams hope

pony her language

for true insight to open

effort must happen

to bring quality of trust

be shepherds of life

The definition of PONY here is “a literal translation of a foreign language text“. For example, Robert Pinsky is reported to have used a literal translation in preparing his translation of Dante‘s Inferno (1994), as he does not know Italian. Similarly, Richard Pevear worked from literal translations provided by his wife, Larissa Volokhonsky, in their translations of several Russian novels.

This poem uses the Haiku form with a repeating pattern of the 3rd line of one stanza being the 1st line of the next. I started this pattern during a previous post. Give it a try if you like.

her name called moves her,

from the summer’s scorching heat,

clouds teasing relief

give hope of a friendly pool,

to cool the burning

she crawls to the edge to drink

from this lake of fate

the point a quenching rebirth

she may soar again

This poem uses the Haiku form with a repeating pattern of the 3rd line of one stanza to be the 1st line of the next. I am not aware of a Haiku form using this pattern, not that it matters. I am looking to the future and am staying positive we will be a better place. There are many outcomes, but with a continued and determined effort the goal is in reach and the winning score is taken. Continued effort. Continued education of the masses, and not only for the Whites. Continued inspection of all contributions to racism and the influences ever how nuanced they are. I stay not hopeful, but positive that it will happen.
