FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
  • No sexual assault against anyone.

Prompt for Challenge

FIRST OF ALL: Please remember, this is NOT a race. Take your time. Friday is only a part of the title, not a deadline.

February 5th is National Wear Red Day, or Shower With a Friend Day. There are much more serious International Days the 5th is set aside for, but the challenge at this point in its growth is not a place to explore those quite yet. Although I’m not stopping anyone. If you know of another National/International Day you want to write about this week, go for it.

  • Word Count of 500. (SUGGESTED)
  • Some great stories were written last week. Continue those stories this week! (SUGGESTED)

OR

  • If you are not writing a series then It’s National ? Day and you are in charge of the party. Create your own National/International Day and spread the news. (REQUIRED if not in the middle of writing a series OR doing the above Suggested Prompt.) You can always mention a national day in a series.

Friday Fiction with Ronovan Writes Prompt #11 Entries: THE LINKS

Talk about a great prompt idea. This one, or something like it, may show up again. Wow. Some great entries. If you’ve never read the entries of these Fiction Reviews before, start with this one. They are short, and very good.

A Must Read designation does NOT mean an entry is necessarily better than the other entries. It means that entry clicked with me in some way in that moment I read it.

The order appearing is the order in which the entry was received.

GL below stands for the reading Grade Level. Harry Potter is a GL of around 5. Tolkien is around GL 6.5. Passive Sentence percentage is included as Active Sentences are considered the preferred form of writing by most editors and publishers. Active moves the story along. Passive is not always bad. Sometimes a story works that way, perhaps through the language of a person or the type of story. Even then, keep the percentage low.

The Prompt for the Challenge was:

January 22, which is Friday’s date, is Celebration of Life Day.

  • Take a moment in your life of which you would celebrate and use that as inspiration for a no more than 750 word story, but don’t let that stop you if you are enjoying yourself and the story is going well. (SUGGESTED)
  • If you are not doing a series, write the story as if the characters were animals living in the roles of humans. An example would be the policemen might be German Shepherds and other Police type dogs. (REQUIRED if not in the middle of writing a series.) OR
  • Use the same experience for a story in one of the following Genres: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Thriller. (Required if not using the above.)

I’m not certain I’ve ever had an error free entry before. Whoa. I recommend you listen to the song used for this one, even if you aren’t a fan. I did. Excellent. 292 words, 4.0 GL, and 3% passive sentence structure.

You’ll never guess what this one is about from the title, and it may even take you several lines in to figure it out. 283 words, 8.7 GL, and 7% passive sentence structure.

I haven’t even read it yet and I’m already scared by the title. Okay, it turned out better than the title led me to expect. There are no zombies in the story! 281 words, 2.1 GL, and 0% passive sentence structure. @TeresaSmeigh

A Must Read Ruby Manchanda (Whispering Thoughts)
This short story could be about a young man in many parts of the world … during so many different eras. I enjoyed the simple quaintness of this, if that’s the correct way of saying it. Something peaceful about it in a strange way. Strange because in a way it shouldn’t be peaceful. 239 words, 5.2 GL, and 5% passive sentence structure.

Okay, this guy is a serious writer. But I knew that already. The way he links together the lyric and that ending … nice. 248 words, 7.0 GL, and 6% passive sentence structure. @billmelaterplea

To the Stars-Robots on the Loose! #Photography

Not long ago I was doing some photo shooting of a sight that occurs in my Southern Romance. I wanted some pictures I could use to capture the true imagery of the place. I love old tin toys that really do work. So does my son. He passed this one up because he had a specific toy in mind he wanted on this trip. I was going to enter this in a photo challenge of one of my friends but I was a bit too late. Instead I think it fits well for Throw Back Thursday type post.

Tin Toys of the type I’m talking about came into being around the middle of the 1800s from Germany. Original Tin Robots are some of the most sought after. Obviously this is not one of those. Click HERE for a great article about the history of Tin Toys on a site I found.

The photo was taken with my little LG phone.

If this guy is around the next time I make it through there, I think he’ll be coming home with me.

As many of you know by now, I like to watch old TV shows. On one such show called This is Your Life, Petula Clark, the song goddess of England, was being honored. One man, who was a child star with Clark, was filmed for the event, not able to be present in person. That man was Songwriter Hall of Fame member Anthony Newley who would pass away three years later.

I chose Anthony Newley for todays #BeWoW post for his charm, elegance, and dignity to his craft and others. He represents a time long gone, when even the celebrities who were not at the top knew how to act in public and be respectful to others. Even the rock stars of his time knew respect.

Anthony Newley was an early influence on David Bowie, but that legends recent passing did not influence this selection. I only discovered that fact a few seconds before typing this sentence, long after making the selection. However, when listening to recordings of Newley from the early to mid ’60s, I do hear the sound some speak of.

Anthony Newley’s legend has fallen by the wayside for many. Perhaps not so flamboyant as to seek out the spotlight, he did his magic where it mattered most.

There are many types authors. Some are writers of books, of poetry, of newspapers. Then there are the writers of songs.

In 1996 Newley spoke the following words on the This is Your Life special I mentioned earlier.

“In a profession where little boys with dirty t-shirts are called stars, it’s truly reassuring to know that there are real stars like yourself still with us.”-Anthony Newley to Petula Clark.

Slippin’ into sideways single again, thinkin’ I know what’s the best thing for my friend.
Never seein’ I’m the one playin’ a fool, keep trippin’ into a funk deeper than a city cesspool.
Do you ever think you want your own time, oh but you keep missin’ when she’s out of your line?
Then you look into her eyes, her heart and you play it off like a chump, thinkin’ you’re so cool.

Love’s not a playground for the child or the immature clown painted on society’s scripted scene.
Expectations of your world can bring you down to your knees and shatter your deepest dreams.
Where do you go from here when all you know is the beaten down lovers lost melody hit machine?
Words rhymed and bought to break your heart and rip your pockets for every cent at the seams?

Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge Image 2016

The Guidelines are simple.

  1. Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above has links within it to articles about how to write Haibun, Tanka, and even a new form I created called Freku. You can also do the 3/5/3 form if you likeinstead of the 5/7/5 that I usually use. Write, share, and have fun. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com. (You would be surprised at how many syllables some words actually have.)
  2. The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
  3. Use the Tag of Ronovan Writes Haiku Challenge. This will help me find you in case you forget to ping back or leave your URL in the comments.
  4. Copy the link of your finished haiku URL  in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put the URL link in the address bar of this post, if you like, within your post. Your inclusion of the link encourages others to try the challenges out, be creative, and join a community to find friends and more followers (hopefully). Sorry for the confusion last week with the posting of the Challenge on Sunday for a few hours. Never blog with very little sleep. I went hunting for those who participated last week and I did not have a link for to check and some had participated and some I could not find an entry for. If you missed out because of the error, and would like to be included in this Review, post a Haiku and I’ll update the Review when I wake up. 🙂 As soon as I saw the post had gone out, I took it down to keep as little confusion out there as possible. Some figured out I had goofed. We still had over 60 responses, even with the foul up.

I wanted all those who participate, my friends and Haikumily, (I know Haikumily sound corny for Haiku family but that’s what it is around here in this growing community.) that as we grow, I know I have not been able to be as personable as I used to be, but don’t let that make you think I don’t appreciate all of your dedication to this thing Y’ALL have made such a huge thing. (For those who don’t speak Southernese, Y’all is Southern American for You All, or All of You.)

MUST READ 1000hoursleft (Mek): For Pho’s Sake | Work In Progress. This, so far in my doing the review, is my favorite overall read of a post. Mek used words to describe the experience of creating Pho in such a way you could feel, smell, and experience it yourself. I only wish I could taste it. Two Haiku mixed in with the post, added at just the right moments made this a complete post. I placed this in INSPIRATION because it inspires the desire to experience things like this.

MUST READ Pancake Bunnykins: Last Breath | A Real Messy Beautiful Twisted Sunshine.  I’m putting this in MOMENTS, but it could easily be in LIFE, or NATURE. The word choice and writing allows for such a wide interpretation. Only the image used leads me to be specific in the placement. For those visiting this blog, the like button is to the left of the top image. A little different than the usual theme’s we visit.

Marie: Empty Playground | The Syllabub Sea. I missed typing the letter l in ‘playground’ the first time through, not sure if that is telling of something or not. This one gives me a sad feeling of a devoted teacher’s thoughts. Maybe that says something about me. I get that hollow sad feeling when I think about having once been a teacher but unable to remember.

MUST VISIT & SEE Denis: Trilling Seagulls | HaikuHound. Guys, you MUST go and see this. The photography here of Australia at sunset is AWESOME!!! I always love Denis’ photos of his pet and all the birds he comes upon, but the birds are secondary in these. Makes you want to get up and make a trip.

MUST READ JustMaria: Earth’s Cry | Doodles and Scribbles. (Why do I use JustMaria? Because we have other women named Maria in the challenge AND I first met Maria as JustMaria. Although there is nothing JUST about her.) When I saw the title in the link, the first thing I thought of was how when the earth begins to tremble for whatever reason, earthquake or some other cataclysmic event, birds let out a call of warning, alarm. They are like the cry of the earth to let other living things know something is happening. Maria came up with another idea and a lot more poetic too.  @ciisalveni

Roz Hill: Hardened Harmony | Small Spaces and the good life with Roz and Phil Hill. After some snowl searching, (It’s an inside joke, inside of me that is.) we have a nice Haiku with a photo that would be good for using in a story. That’s one reason you check out blogs, for reference material.

I owe it to Martha Goes Green, a recipe book like no other.

Most dishes have been worth the time and care to follow to the letter, until familiarity bred improvisation and I threw caution out of the pot, to create dishes of my own.

Mushroom risotto, carrot and lentil soup, pea and feta frittatas, but none has embedded into our lives, requiring no tweaking, like the vegetarian pho. A glance at the ingredients on first go read like a who’s who of the spice world. Writing the shopping list gave me cramps- it read longer than flash fiction.

Peeling, chopping, counting out pieces- the preparation was a meditation in beauty, as I composed a still life of cinnamon sticks, shallots, star anise, ginger, garlic, cardamon and cloves that spoke of goodness, an abundance of sensory delights.

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will:

  1. Find your voice
  2. Step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
  3. Perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST (New York Time) Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

  • Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
  • If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
  • No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.

Friday Fiction with Ronovan Writes Prompt #10 Entries: THE LINKS

A Must Read designation does NOT mean an entry is necessarily better than the other entries. It means that entry clicked with me in some way in that moment I read it.

This week has some awesome entries. Very imaginative and creative. Some are stepping out into new areas, just as the challenge was intended to do.

The order appearing is the order in which the entry was received.

GL below stands for the reading Grade Level. Harry Potter is a GL of around 5. Tolkien is around GL 6.5.

Passive Sentence percentage is included as Active Sentences are considered the preferred form of writing by most editors and publishers. Active moves the story along. Passive is not always bad. Sometimes a story works that way, perhaps through the language of a person or the type of story. Even then, keep the percentage low.

The Prompt for the Challenge was:

January 22, which is Friday’s date, is Celebration of Life Day.

  • Take a moment in your life of which you would celebrate and use that as inspiration for a no more than 750 word story, but don’t let that stop you if you are enjoying yourself and the story is going well. (SUGGESTED)
  • If you are not doing a series, write the story as if the characters were animals living in the roles of humans. An example would be the policemen might be German Shepherds and other Police type dogs. (REQUIRED if not in the middle of writing a series.) OR
  • Use the same experience for a story in one of the following Genres: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Thriller. (Required if not using the above.)

Did you notice the site looks different?

First up, check out the CHALLENGES BY MY PALS page. As I discover people who participate in my challenges who have Weekly Challenges of their own, I’ll be adding them to this page. You can add your challenge to the comments if you like so I know. But I reserve the right to say no and delete the comment. If you aren’t an active part of our community I can’t see my promoting your site … yet. That may sound unfriendly but I think it’s fair.

As for the new look of the blog. I’m experimenting. My theme has different layouts and I’m going to see what I like.

Ronovan Writes Laugh of the Week

I’ll be putting videos at the top of the sidebar and for now those will be the LAUGH of the WEEK. You don’t have to leave the sidebar to watch or listen to it. Click the play symbol in the center and you’ve got it.

I won’t be doing a post each week about the video I show. Instead, it will be there on the sidebar for you to click and watch if you like. I intend to keep them as short as possible. This weeks is longer than the ones I will like to normally use of no more than 2:00.

Let me say a little about this weeks LAUGH of the WEEK.

At 4:55 it is worth it to see Tim Conway attempt to make Carol Burnett break character during a skit where four characters are playing Password. Tim has just said Elephant, which is wrong, in response to Carol’s clue. All Carol has to do is get Vicki Lawrence, Mama in this skit, to begin her part by giving a clue to guest star Dick Van Dyke. But Carol has to be able to speak in order to do it.

A little backstory to this segment. There were rehearsals earlier in the day. Even then, Carol was having a difficult time keeping a straight face. The director came through during makeup and told Vicki Lawrence, of Mama’s Family fame, actually the youngest member of the cast who played Mama the one in glasses and the grey wig, that the Elephant story had changed and to be prepared for anything.

Vicki knew it would be trouble trying to get through the skit with a straight face. Her husband, the makeup man on the show, told her to get Tim Conway for a change because Tim was always trying to crack people up, even making Harvey Korman, who some may know from Blazing Saddles, pee in his pants during the famous Dentist skit. Vicki had a difficult time in the past doing anything off script because she was so young and felt she shouldn’t. Her attempt to ‘get’ Tim has a word in it that I don’t use. Watch and see what happens.

Who in the world is Louis Nizer? It might sound a bit crazy to some people to have a man who once held the title of highest paid attorney in the world.

Nizer was the senior partner of the law firm he began in 1926, Phillips, Nizer, Benjamin, Krim & Ballon. At the age of 92, he was still going to work almost every day until 10 days before his death in 1992. Was he a workaholic, control freak, or a man passionate about his choice of career? I’ll take that last one. For some reason I can’t see a person devoting 70+ years to unless they were passionate about it.

Dialogue Tags, Action Beats, and The Dialogue Comma.

As some of you know, I host a Fiction writing challenge on Fridays here on Ronovan Writes. It’s funny how I use Ronovan Writes as if it’s not me. Sometimes I shorten it to RW. That has nothing to do with this article, merely an aside.

Dialogue Tags and More by Ronovan Hester


One of the goals of the Friday Fiction with Ronovan Writes is to improve the writing of those who participate. At the moment my goal with the challenge is to encourage the improvement of the basics of writing Fiction. Some problems I see, not just in a few challenge entries, but in books I review, are the use of Dialogue Tags, Action Beats, and Dialogue Punctuation. Also today I’ll introduce some of you to Grammarly.

This piece today is not just for those doing the challenge. This is for anyone who:

  • Writes.
  • Writes short stories
  • Writes novellas, or novels.

What I have here will help you. For some of you it will be a reminder.

 

Let’s begin with Dialogue Tags. A Dialogue Tag is when you have a speaker identified along with the dialogue and a word such as ‘said’.

Example: “The dog jumped the fence,” Bob said. OR Bob said, “The dog jumped the fence.”

Example: “Did the dog jump the fence?” Sally asked.

Notice there are words used to show what kind of speaking Bob and Sally are doing. Let’s change one to see what happens.

“The dog jumped the fence.” Bob pointed to Fido racing across the field after the sheep.

We know who is speaking here, Bob because he is the only one mentioned and he is doing an action associated with the act of seeing the dog jump the fence. Now let’s see what happens with Sally.

“Did the dog jump the fence?” Sally pointed to Fido racing across the field after the sheep.

You’ll run into some people who despise Dialogue Tags, regardless of the situation. They would like you to use something like an Action Beat instead. What are Action Beats? An Action Beat is the actions taking place between the dialogues. The two examples above with Bob and Sally pointing are Action Beats. Notice there was no mention of the people speaking. You assumed who was speaking.

My personal opinion is you need a combination of Beats and Tags and nothing at all. Sticking to one and one tool only, in my opinion, would be boring.

Let’s take a look at passage using all three tools.

Example with Dialogue Tags and Action Beats.

“This class is crazy.” Billy ducked the dark rectangular object on its way toward his head.
Larry picked up the weapon, marker dust covered his hand. He threw the eraser back at the offender. “We’re not playing! Find someone else!”
“Thanks, Larry.” Billy’s muffled voice came from the floor.
“You can get up now, Billy.”
“Do you think Ms. Willett will be mad when she sees what they did to her notes on the board?”
“If I were you, I’d be reading a book when she comes in. Act as innocence as possible.”
“Will that work?”
“Did last year. This is my second year in the class. I failed by a point last time. She’s tough. They don’t call her hard butt because she works out so much.”
Billy laughed, and said, “Either way she’s my favorite teacher.”

The above is not the best example, but it gives you an idea of what I’m talking about. I used one dialogue tag, and then only to keep the reader on track. I didn’t want to throw in lots of Action Beats. Action Beats work great, but can be overdone.

Then you might have a passage with only Dialogue Tags.

All Dialogue Tags:

“This class is crazy,” Billy said and ducked the dark rectangular object on its way toward his head.
“We’re not playing! Find someone else!” Larry said.
“Thanks, Larry,” Billy said.
“You can get up now, Billy,” Larry said.
“Do you think Ms. Willett will be mad when she sees what they did to her notes on the board?” Billy asked.
“If I were you, I’d be reading a book when she comes in. Act as innocence as possible,” Larry said.
“Will that work?” Billy asked.
“Did last year. This is my second year in the class. I failed by a point last time. She’s tough. They don’t call her hard butt because she works out so much,” Larry said.
“Either way she’s my favorite teacher,” Billy said.
How boring is that? Annoying? Except for the exclamation marks for Larry there is no personality or life to the scene. Now you see why you use dialogue tags as little as possible. You also use Action Beats only when you need to. Of course you can pep up the dialogue itself and accomplish a lot.

One thing you need to do when writing is, give each character a distinctive voice. I always try to do that in every story I write. One character might speak in short sentences, another in long. This guy doesn’t use contractions, this guy uses them even when they don’t exist.

By giving distinctive voices, you can have a conversation without a lot of tags or beats. Beats are good. You do need them. However, if you can get as much as possible across in your dialogue you are a long way to being a success.

No Dialogue Tags and No Action Beats.

“Billy, duck!”
“These people are insane. That could’ve hit me in the eye. Thanks Larry.”
“We’re not playing! Find someone else!”
“Ooo, you nailed him with that eraser.”
“He shouldn’t’ve thrown it in the first place. Uh, Billy?”
“Yeah?”
“Stop hiding.”
“Oh, yeah. Thanks. Do you think Ms. Willett will be mad when she sees what they did to her notes on the board?”
“Put it this way, if I were you, I’d be reading a book when she comes in. Act like an angel.”
“Will that work? This place is a disaster area. There is no way she will think we didn’t do some of this.”
“Worked last year.”
“Last year?”
“Uh, Billy, I’m a year older than you, remember? I failed by one point last time. But as bad as my grades were, I never got in trouble with Ms. Willett.”
“Larry, you’re always getting into trouble.”
“I know, but every time something happened, I stuck my nose in a book. She’s tough but fair. They don’t call her hard—”
“Larry!”
“Okay, they don’t call her hard ‘butt’ because of how much she works out.”
“I don’t care why they call her that, she’s my favorite teacher.”

Along with dialogue, one thing I notice in books I read and blogs I read is Dialogue Punctuation. I’ll only mention one form of punctuation at this time.

I’ll also make this as simple as I can. Where does the comma go?

Example: “The dog jumped the fence,” Bob said. OR Bob said, “The dog jumped the fence.”

In dialogue, we all know to use the quotation marks around the speech, the dialogue. Where does the comma go? Yes, there is a comma in most dialogue IF there is a normal expression of speech. Look at the example above. There is no exclamation nor a question mark, therefore you put a comma inside the quotation mark.

If you have an exclamation or question mark, then put the mark and close with the quotation, no comma is required.

Example: “The dog jumped the fence!” Bob said.

Example: “Did the dog jump the fence?” Sally asked.

No comma was required in the examples above.

You can do away with commas by not using Dialogue Tags and sticking with Action Beats. Yawn. Okay, not really yawn, if done correctly. When you have a scene with two people conversing, you can easily do away with Dialogue Tags and stick with Action Beats and no manner of denoting who is speaking at all based on the rhythm of the exchange.

Another TOOL to use, if you don’t have Word is Grammarly.com. It can be used inside of WordPress or any place you type, even comments on blogs. Also, they have a FREE version, which I use.

Just so people know why I was sharing the stats from last year for the challenge, I wanted all of you to know what this community has accomplished.

The Guidelines are simple.

  1. Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above has links within it to articles about how to write Haibun, Tanka, and even a new form I created called Freku. You can also do the 3/5/3 form if you likeinstead of the 5/7/5 that I usually use. Write, share, and have fun. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com. (You would be surprised at how many syllables some words actually have.)
  2. The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
  3. Copy the link of your finished haiku URL  in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put the URL link in the address bar of this post, if you like, within your post. Your inclusion of the link encourages others to try the challenges out, be creative, and join a community to find friends and more followers (hopefully). I’ve seen different types of pigeons at the bird feeders outside my window but we don’t have this type here, at least I haven’t seen them.
