The hand carved swing was beneath the trees along the back fence line and I let my body and the wood find each other in their common curves, as I knew was the thought behind its creation.

The early fall night was cooler than I had expected, but cooler rather than hot was a good thing. The temperatures were higher than usual for this time of year.

The candle flame wavered slightly on the tree stump used for a table. He’d thought of everything. A lot more of everything than I knew about, even now.

The flame didn’t do much for reading, but that wasn’t why it was here. There was something warm about it. The kind of warm a heart needs, not the flesh. Staring into the flame could help a person get lost for a while. But I had been lost for too long. I was searching. I wanted, I needed to find.

Crickets chirped a Southern serenade. I drifted between their harmonies and the dancing of the flame. If asked I would’ve sworn the swing moved, although I knew it didn’t. At least not by my doing. The flame grew large and then small again, back and forth, with the size changing as if in time with my heartbeat.

A sky filled with dots of dreams and wishes, twinkling their good luck and smiles down on those they were intended for. Those dreams, those wishes burned bright and rained down to a place between the flame and me. The serenade grew louder. One wave after another assaulted my peace.

An ocean roared and waves crashed against the hull chasing the moon. A voice called and I turned. Dark hair moved and sun bronzed cheeks glowed in the moonlight, lips parted an—

“Sis?”

I jerked. Two figures stood over me, each with an arm around the other and looking down at me. “What time is it?”

“About 9:30. We stopped by Mom and Dad’s and got caught up in talk. Sorry we’re late.” Blue eyes of our father searched the eyes I’d inherited from our mother.

“And your mom had lasagna made.” The young woman rubbed the man’s stomach.

“Shh, you weren’t supposed to mention that part.” Mother’s lasagna was his kryptonite.

I smiled up at the miniature version of our father. “You two are lucky you got out of there this early, considering you two were together. Wait until they find out.”

“Well, it was a bit uncomfortable, but they were doing their best to talk about anything and everything other than something.”

My brother and I both looked at my best friend then at each other and then back again. “That was amazing.”

“What?”

“Sis means you just made so much sense while saying so much nonsense. You could be my partner in a law firm one day. ” He leaned down and kissed her the top of her hair. His lips lingered. I could see him inhaling her scent. He had wasted so many years not realizing she had been right in front of him … waiting.

He turned, a grin of joy, a look of bliss on his face. His eyes caught mine and frowned.

“Don’t you dare.” I held up a warning finger. “It’s okay. My turn will be soon enough. I know it. It has to be. After all these years, he can’t give up now.”

“It would take an army to stop him.”

The golden glow of the candle blurred. “But that’s what they have.” Arms wrapped around me and the stirring of the wind blew out the flame. My world plunged into darkness. The stars were dim compared to the heart of the flame. Even when it couldn’t be seen.

This is my entry into my first Friday Fiction with Ronovan Writes Prompt Challenge. The story is one you can choose to have it fit in the manner you wish for it to. I hadn’t planned for this to be a Be Writing on Wednesday post but it’s the day I was able to have it ready for.

I don’t write about something unless I am either interested in the subject or am part of the character make up of the cast. For today’s story I looked around and believe I found an appropriate quote.

A BLOG WORTH KNOWING.

In the course of reviewing the Weekly Haiku Challenge I come across some great blogs. Well … all of them are great in one way or another. With some it’s the Haiku. Some the stories told. Some the personality behind the blog. And then there is the photography of others. We have some great photography.

One blog that truly focuses on the combination of the two is one of my favorites and I wish I visited it more and have been of late. I fail to click ‘like’ the way I should. I’ve explained in the past how I do that. I truly do forget. Not sure if it is brain damage specifically from or a side effect of the concussion I suffered, but there are things I often can’t seem to grasp if they are not in my routine.

One thing to keep in mind is the photography you see here is copyrighted so look but don’t touch without the great man’s permission. Um, although, I um, sort of, uh, never mind.

But the blog I want to draw everyone’s attention to is:

Haiku Hound

“I care passionately about the natural world and respect the need to preserve it.”

I believe you can see why the site has its name. Meet Denis and Charlie Girl. You guess which is which. I believe Charlie Girl finds the subjects and Denis actually takes the photos. Maybe that will give you a hint as to which is whom.

Denis has this amazing knack to capture what at least I want to see. His work is something you would see in National Geographic. I do not exaggerate this. Along with the photography he gives tellings of how he came upon the subjects or more about what the subjects are.

With a place like Australia as your source of muse and models you can’t go wrong. Not that Denis keeps strictly to the island nation. He does stray at times. His choice of subject is fascinating each time in ways he doesn’t even realize.

This coastal Tea-Tree is one example of one thing Denis sees and something else I see.

He sees how it came to be and a tree of interest and beauty. I also see the interest and beauty but my imagination sees wisps of smoke crawling across the ground. I hope Denis will forgive my strange workings of his art.

But then we have the obvious beauty of his craft with the color of his world.

Make certain to check out the possible publishing aspect of the Haiku Challenge beginning with this weeks challenge. Only those who fill out the form at the bottom of the page at THIS LINK will be considered. It’s for a possible future FREE ebook on Amazon. Something we can have that’s ours and an experience to share with loved ones maybe. But no form, no usage of your Haiku. Just keep writing as usual. And it isn’t a guarantee it will happen. But I think it will. A great way to learn a lot about the world of publishing. We have at least 20 sign up so far.

Maybe this week isn’t so bad with the words. Cover has so many uses. You can even apply it to types of cover, such as blanket or the like. Color, well that one you an go with in a lot of direction as well. Are they challenging? Slightly, but I do want to make you have to think sometime.

The rules are simple.

Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com.

The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.

Copy the link of your finished haiku URL in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. I will comment on your site. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put a link back to this prompt page, if you like within your post, as long as it does not take away from your haiku. This is simply a prompt and challenge to encourage people to try Haiku and give some a prompt and a place to share in comments so we can find each other. A link in your post does give others a chance to find us and join in. Use one of the two below if you like.

Annette Rochelle Aben (Best Selling Author, Radio Show Host): Behold the Majestic | Annette Rochelle Aben. A surprisingly beautiful image from so quickly put together of a Haiku. Although 16 minutes is a bit slow for Annette, I think she must have decided to have breakfast after she saw the prompt come out. But that’s the great thing about Haiku, you go with instinct and see what happens. You may change a word here or there but that initial thought can be the best moment of creativity. Tessa: Gold Crane | Writing is my life. Make sure to check out Tessa’s new profile photo! There is a symmetry of the use of words in this one. And oddly, I don’t often, if I have ever, noticed how symmetrical the length of the first and third lines can be until I read this one. The two are not exactly the same length but close enough to give a balance to the whole piece. Strange what you see and think of when you look at a piece of poetry. @TeresaSmeigh

Greg: Lookie-Loos | Potholes in the Road of Life. Not the usual from our friend Greg. And he got me with this one. From that title I had no idea what to expect, but he went alternate meaning for this one, alternate from what you may have at first thought. And oddly you could say this is a nature Haiku in many ways. @greg_wolford

Alice: Gruidae | Boomerang Zone. You are looking at the title and wondering what it means, right? Don’t worry, I had to search it. And then I laughed. Totally appropriate for the challenge this week. I at first thought the Haiku was of a peaceful imagery but there is one word that then makes me go to the more, well not quite peaceful. Kind of funny in my mind. Thinking of John Travolta as a bird now. @Vidocq_CC

Clarence: 3 Golden Wishes | PrarieChat. If you haven’t been visiting Clarence’s blog lately, this is a good time to jump back to it. Very good offerings. Clarence is showing his learning this week. Another turn to the search engines for me already. First Alice and now Clarence. But I enjoy that, it just makes doing the review take a little longer.

Shida: Red Yiy | 876LoveR. It took a couple of tries to fully get this one. Then it came in to view and I laughed. I’m not sure if I laughed at humor or at my slowness at understanding. I only have one negative thing to say about Shida, I’m jealous. I can’t be a BrownGirlBlogger. I may have to start the SpeckledBrothersBloggersBand. Um, I have freckles. And no, I can’t say it even two times fast. @realrebel_r

Judy: Failure or Fate | Edwina’s Episodes. Sometimes you wonder why you didn’t get to do that something you wanted to. Now, I’m not saying things happen to bring an opportunity for a Haiku, but it does give you a thought as to perhaps there is some reason behind why that thing was missed. @EdwinasEpisodes

Kat: Gold ‘n Crane | like mercury colliding. I think you’ll enjoy these three. I know she may be wondering why I didn’t make up a title this week and went with the post title, but I liked how that looked and sounded together. All three are different, and all very much telling their own stories. Very well done.

jazzytower: Silhouettes Begin | Thoughts and Entanglements. A very peaceful and imagery filled Haiku. I would like to see a painting of this one or a photograph by someone who knows how. Hmm, just thought, I guess this really did paint a picture with words for me. Now that’s amazing in only 13 words. @jazzytower

Ritu: Mane & Happy New Year | But I Smile Anyway. Two Haiku that use synonyms to amazing affect, effect, offect. She used them so well. The first one is very much a nature Haiku and may have you scratching your head a little at first for the prompt words, but they are there in all their syonymatic glory. (Yes, I made up a word but isn’t it a cool one?) @PhantomGiggler

Michael Erb & Company: Lovers Embrace | Me and the Boss Poetry. Four Haiku that truly do tell a story, one leading to the next to a final end. Reminding one of a scene perhaps of being at a cabin on a lake and rising in the morning. @IrisandMe

Sue Vincent (Author): Promise | Daily Echo. This week Sue gives a culture reference. I even looked it up and didn’t know the names we used in the US, well I had heard of them but had no idea they referred to this. And now that I’ve seen one close up in a picture, I may not sleep until the next review. Of course I discussed it with my boy “B” and he loved it. Dr. Kottaway: Gleaning | KO Rural Mad As Hell Blog. You know, I often expect a bit of odd humor and a strange way of Haiku for our resident doctor, I mean that in a good way. She stretches the mind at times. Like silly putty. But this one isn’t like that. This is a great educational post about sand dunes in Colorado? I had no idea. Or maybe I did but amnesia sucks at times. I REALLY enjoyed reading about her time there and photo showing the scale of things. So much in a short paragraph. The lady should write a book.

Meredith & Martha: Pulled/Builder’s Dream by Meredith and Benevolence/The Concert by Martha | Meredith’s Musings. Meredith gives us two different Haiku while Martha’s I kind of see in an odd way playing on a theme depending on the person looking at what they are looking forward to. Elusive: Urban Dusk | Elusive Trope. I agree with Olga about that last line. Two images come to mind. Go see what you can come up with.

D.B. Mauldin (Author): WGolden Crane, Pot of Gold, and Church Women | mama bear musings. Three this week. After typing all of Al’s Haiku names this was a piece of cake. So these were awesome. Olga: Crane Drops | Stuff and what if. Great visual with the Haiku. A visual she was forced to create herself for lack of finding anything just right. You WILL love it. Everyone else did. The comments were great except for an odd one that I think may have not come across as intended.

H. M. Goodchild (Author): Fortunes Dreams of Good Luck | Folksong and Fantasy. Two Haiku of folklore and fantasy. Florence: I Have the Power | Meanings And Musings. I like to have fun naming Florence’s Haiku but this will be the last week for the humorous endeavors with the upcoming possible ventures the challenge might take. This Haiku actually says a lot. More than what cranes often represent but what that representation means as a result. I didn’t even realize that until I began writing her review. I figured if I kept talking long enough, something interesting would come out. Or maybe not. @FTThum

Islam & Christianity,SHARING MORE THAN WE REALIZE.

I got a problem. Muslims and Christians. Anyone getting nervous yet from those two sentences? Wondering where I am heading with it?

You see Muslims and Christians have something in common. Both get blamed for some jacked up mess. Extremists on both sides do radical things and then the entire faith of both sides get slammed for it. I know Muslims. I am a Christian. Guess what?

We’re friends.

Muslims can’t stand what terrorists acting in the name of Islam. You know what? Those terrorists murder Muslims too.

My fellow Christians, you aren’t feeling this? No?

How much do you hate getting blamed for the Inquisition and all those acts by past power hungry mad men using God as a tool for their on means? How many Christians died at the hands of Christians?

Feeling it now? Do you feel that part of history being thrown at you all the time? Do you feel how screwed up people used Christianity and God to their own means and now you have to answer for it and overcome it?

People are People. They mess you over, okay, then don’t like them. If a person doesn’t mess you over, then don’t have a problem with them just because they have something in common with someone who has done something.

We don’t have to always agree with someone’s beliefs but that doesn’t mean we have to be against a person. If they are nice to you then what’s the deal?

New Things are Happening on Ronovan Writes.

Depending on the order you read posts, you may already know part of what I’m about to tell you.

Some new things are happening here on Ronovan Writes.

#1 A New Writing Prompt Challenge called Friday Fiction with Ronovan Writes.

You get a prompt on Friday and it’s due by 23:59 Wednesday. I’ll be attempting to do a review just like I do the Haiku Challenge, then I’ll post and tweet and G+.

#2 I’m looking to do FREE e-book anthologies and collections of those who agree to it of entries in the Haiku Challenge as well as the new Friday Fiction Challenge. There’s a form to fill out to okay it, if no fill out, then everything is as usual. It’s like you and I didn’t even know the idea ever existed. There is a page for Friday Fiction up top with details and a form. The Haiku Challenge Guidelines page at the top has the form for the okay to include Haiku entries.

I look at the e-books as ways to put ourselves out there, some of us who might never do it otherwise, and friends and family get to see our work in a book. This is also a way to learn some things about putting a book together. This is about quality, not just throwing something together. If I go forward with the ideas, I may be looking for some talents to be donated.

Keep in mind, if you don’t fill out a form then your entries in the challenges won’t be considered for the e-books, but you get in the reviews and everything just like normal.

Welcome to a new weekly Writing Prompt here on Ronovan Writes:

FRIDAY FICTION with RONOVAN WRITES

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning how to be a better writer, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are you will find your voice, step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies, or perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer.

DEADLINE IS:

23:59 EST Wednesday. That will give me Thursday to complete reading and reviewing the entries and compiling the links and such, much as I do with the Haiku Challenge Review now.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language. I don’t use profanity in my works but I ‘m not here to handcuff anyone. I know there are times a character will say something a certain way otherwise it comes across as fake.
No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.
No sexual assault against anyone.

THE BIG RED CUP-A #BeWoW post. Kind of.

I felt a need to share today. #BeWoW, Writer’s Quote Wednesday #LinkYourLife? Whatever you choose. This really has nothing to do with those link shares I’m involved with that normally go out today. But it can apply.

Today I want to talk about the most idiotic thing ever. THE BIG RED CUP.

There are some vocal people out there who like to get their voices heard either through social media or actual media. So what do they do? Go after anything they can to be heard. Some even think this is doing some good. They are proud of themselves.

What does that do?

Makes them look, I’m trying not to say idiotic, they look like some ill informed fanatic and makes those loosely associated with them by a word be hated and ridiculed. When the truth is, the behavior of said people is about as stupid as it gets and does nothing to represent those who do truly live and act according to what is being spoken about.

I’m a Christian. Full blown, full force, faith believing, Bible thumpin’, Christian. But I could care less what a stimulant addict pusher does with their cups to push more of their product during the upcoming various holiday seasons. Christmas season in particular.

Don’t like the red cup with no pretty snowflakes and snowmen that have nothing to do with Christmas, then don’t buy Starbucks. But if you really care about your faith, your belief in Jesus that much then you may want to examine where you are spending your money in every way. Where is your money going? Who and what are you supporting by spending that money wherever you spend it?

But back to my rant. I hope that those reading my blog get a good idea of how a true Christian should act, or at least MY opinion of what one should be.

I share my faith at times.
I share my faith through all I say and do by not crossing certain lines I have set.
I try to maintain who I am at all times and what I believe.
I treat everyone the same, regardless of their beliefs. It’s your beliefs, not necessarily mine, so it isn’t bothering me.
I am honest in all I do here on my blog and other communications. It makes things so much easier in life. You ask, I tell. If you don’t want the truth, don’t ask. But I do answer in a nice way.
I respect everyone that shows up here.
I don’t force anything I believe on anyone.

Those of you out there who do more yelling about Red Cups and not even whispering about God and Jesus, I think you lost your priorities.

What are you representing?
Who are you representing? Support who supports you and your beliefs.
Do you know how much money Christians have? Do you know how much they should act what they preach
Do you think Christians shouldn’t support pornography? Do you purchase anything at a business that sells it behind the counter? Do you got to movies that have nudity and awkward scenes in it?

So which is worse?

Your yelling about a Red Cup and disgracing the teachings of Jesus Christ?

Your disgracing the teachings of Jesus Christ by supporting other business endeavors that are blatantly against those teachings?

Or is it both?

My Writer’s Quote Wednesday this week on Colleen Chesebro’s blog SilverThreading.com is about Character. I had no idea I would be doing this particular post here today. But I’m going to share that quote here as well. If you would like to read what I originally said about the quote, click the link above.

To all of you that have seen the negativity about how Christians are reacting to the Starbucks issue, ignore it. The way a true Christian handles something like this is to simply not buy the coffee, if they even consider this a true attack on Christmas. Which I don’t believe it is. Personally, I think it’s cheaper to use a plain red cup than to put all those designs on it. And you can always use any leftover after the holidays. To me it’s economical. And if you know me, you know I wouldn’t say something like that about something that I truly believe was wrong in some way. I would have just left it at the don’t buy it part.

So please, any non-Christian readers, any on the fence about becoming a Christian readers, don’t let squeaky wheels sway you away from what Jesus says about how to treat things that are not willing to listen to his teachings.

It’s THESAURUS time. No, that’s not a new character in the next Jurassic Park movie. For Crane click HERE and Gold click HERE. You don’t HAVE to use a synonym but if you get stuck, go for it, get wild, get crazy, go out on a crane limb for a pot of gold. And remember, scroll all the way down that page when you go to it, there are words all the way at the bottom to use.

Challenge #70

The rules are simple.

Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com.

The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.

Copy the link of your finished haiku URL in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. I will comment on your site. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put a link back to this prompt page, if you like within your post, as long as it does not take away from your haiku. This is simply a prompt and challenge to encourage people to try Haiku and give some a prompt and a place to share in comments so we can find each other.
