Deep Winter Despair

This may be where I take my stand,
this late January morning.
Sad thoughts rising, the transforming
virus spreading throughout the land.

Yes, Covid-19, you expand
your reach, our touch, your air, our breath,
your drilling into our soul’s depth.
We are masked pawns. You do not care
a whit for you are everywhere
and we are left with loss, with death

Two On A Rant::

Décima
She had loved once, innocence lost,
betrayed by his civility,
a man with an agility,
to throw her away without cost.

Outside window covered by frost,
mirrored the emotions inside
a woman unable to hide
her rapidly growing despair…
his child, abandoned without care,
two lives destroyed to save his pride.

Haiku
Hardships test our love,
Through the chill autumn season
into winter’s arms.

NEVER GIVE UP – A poem.

NEVER GIVE UP

This simple man waits in worry,
through mind-fields of love notes not wrote,
in lakes of heartache where hopes float,
and life hangs back in a hurry.
Watching signs till eyes are blurry.
Each one reads to yield or to stop.
Time’s winning as grains of sand drop,
but dreams continue on with care.
I’ll keep loving this crone so rare,
and breathing till I reach her stop.

Inauguration Day-A Poem by a Middle Class, Elderly Canadian Socialist (or, Maybe, a Social Democrat in a Pinch)

Even here, in the cloud-gray dawn,
ferry bound, prawn boat scooting by,
Earth seems lighter, even the sky,
dark as it is, knows that he’s gone.

And, in his stead, we venture on,
Hopeful, in the new day’s glimmer,
New? Old? Safe! Not that flimflammer.
And though flawed, like sensible shoes,
footwear to trust, Joe’s paid his dues.
Our eyes shine in the sweet shimmer.

Here are 3 I thought were standouts for various reasons, those being reasons my strange my caught mid-flight.

But I Smile Anyway… | Ritu Bhathal – A nice poem, but mainly visit her for some moral support. Read her reason behind the poem below her poem. Wow. Very nice Christmas gift. Sarcasm dripping from every letter of that. It is called The Covid Gift after all.

Don’t Forget the Half | CSNelson – Of course, I like the poem but her layout for it was very nice and stands out. Perfectly done for a holiday theme.

Bill Engleson – Always a good poem no matter the style, but a very apropos one for all of us this week. (Really, I just wanted a reason to use the word apropos.)

T….: a Canuck’s Response Midway thru January 13th

Impeached or not, he’s bound to go,
The final bell, the College vote.
He’s now at sea, can barely float
much more than “save the Alamo.”

We see the gulf, the rancour grow,
positions weighted by the yoke
of rhetoric as blurred as smoke.
He is a dismal, thoughtless force.
And though we trust he’s run his course,
a future run should be revoked.

Surf – a poem.

Surf
by Ronovan Hester

No peaks, valleys, or destination points.
Never was a road map pointing the way.
No guarantees the fall will eventually end.
The trek back to the top not blazed or marked. Lost. Alone.
Unique in your success, and one more number in the failures.

Dreams ride the random undulating waves.
The crests unstable and never solid for long.
The high only lasts a moment before the crash.
The climax ends in a churning trough of descent, expected, unknown.
To climb this mountain your vision is vast and wide, planning, and watching.

Carried by the past dashed dreams of others,
and the burning saltiness of millennia of failures.
Just one unbalanced breath, and your ride in peril.
And your next, you slip, not along rough terrain to the bottom of dirt and stone.
But down the wall of see-through glass, life on the other side. Predators of players?

Or the dramatic plunge, less graceful than chaos.
Watching the greeting sun reflecting surface below.
Chest raw from the impact through the vanishing hopes.
Pushing through, chin, knees, shins, scrapped with sandpaper of pulverized dead things.
Bloodied and bruised, but not the end, tumbling over and over, gasping for breath. Dying?

Your limp body washes up on the sand, choking.
You join the other eons of unrecognizable rejects.
No one to help. No roadside assistance. No guardian.
People walking along, heads down, looking for empty shells, and finding you.
But you’re not enough, not quite dead enough, you stink of fresh disappointment.

Their heads refuse to look out to the horizon,
never seeing the sun-soaked crests of possibilities.
None of those tumbles, those survivors, or those joys.
They always walk safely on dry sand, toes dry, just out of reach of adventure.
The chance, the opportunity, of living. Heads not in the sand but forever bowed.

Lives only change with empty shells of the living.
Polished with time to the point they all look the same,
yet the wary keep up their search for the next perfect vessel.
Only inches away, a vibrant and exciting life calls with a roar they no longer hear.
But you’ve survived, and you tremble to your battered and pain-filled knees, again.

You stand, turn to that uncharted, desired filled world.
Wading in up to your chest, deep in the sting of the past.
Now dive and swim to fight the tide, or others will drag you.
They’ll help you along or drown you with their own failures, sinking before they’ve crested,
back to those footprints in the sand, now another empty shell to add to their dead collection.

Turn, wade, dive, scan the playing field, and wait for the swell.
Each fall, each ripped open chest and scrapped chin, battle scars.
No success without trying, nor without appreciated amounts of failure.
With each toe that leaves the sand behind, it dips into the salty dreams of ancient warriors.
You learn to descend from those crests in control, with less in chaos. With more success than not.

Yes, The Poem is Called January 6th, 2021

Here we sit, a ruling at last,
An electoral finale day.
There are no more dragons to slay.
He is now a voice from the past.

Still, he will scream, rant and contrast
his fantasy with all that’s real,
chant he won, cry “the big steal”
berate, bamboozle, and bellow,
blame the stars, the other fellow,
as we await Biden’s New Deal.

Part 2: Yes, The Poem is Called January 6th, 2021 Later in the Day

In seconds, chaos moves in fast,
a fevered Trump-fuelled riot,
Democracy, once sound, quiet,
and this disgrace, such a contrast.

Trump is an actor so miscast,
a grim presidential eyesore
at best, at worst a rotting core,
a gash on America’s heart.
We watch civility depart
and inch closer to civil war.

The World Watches – A poem.

The World Watches

Daily we are given contrast
of what is true and what is thought.
Fools run amok with lies they’ve bought,
leading to the flag at half-mast.

Thank the Lord the role’s been recast.
But the mad serpent still has fangs,
venom seeps into disturbed veins.
Infected minds storm hallowed halls,
seeking truth with traitorous calls.
Strife will never remove these stains.

The Dark Dawn

The storm inside me seeks the light,
whilst mornings clouds sink to the sea,
And there, within the dark of me,
I huddle in the cold of night.

As 2020 leaves stage right,
Its lines fumbled, no final bow
No gracious words can we allow
This ingenue who entered brash,
bold, and succumbs, no year end bash,
leaving us to wonder: what now?

The Final Countdown – A poem.

The Final Countdown

Unity lost to the loppers,
by bottomfeeding dunderheads.
Proof each family tree under-weds,
and brain cells… hippity hoppers.

For the greediest of goppers,
choose to put selfish gain forward.
They hope to feed the frenzied horde.
The two sides come to one last clash.
So they bing they bang and they bash,
and the tally… remains the same.

I honestly gain nothing with more people visiting the post. I don’t have ads running that generates revenue by your visit or by clicks on whatever WordPress has put up.
    • Click HERE for a detailed post on PINGBACKS.
  3. If you like, copy the image in this post and place it within their post, just to show the Haiku is part of this challenge.
    • I am not saying you need or even should, but if you would like to do so then go ahead.

Leaping and Dancing- a Shi Rensa Haiku.

Leaping and Dancing

All should bound and sway

with knowledge of future days

better than the past.

Better than the past,

Will be this new dominion,

a saltating boon?

A saltating boon!

Inspire the weary minded,

with eyes uplifted.

With eyes uplifted,

light shines into the soul,

guiding restrained hope.
