What have I been doing the past few days? You know I haven’t been blogging. Yes, I’ve been doing holidays with my son. He now owns my 13 year old mint condition black Fender acoustic I strummed maybe 12 times when I got it. I then went into serious baby room clearing out and painting getting ready for the aforementioned son.

But I’ve also been working on my NEW author site. It’s not perfect but it’s me.

To celebrate, I have put the first chapter of my debut novel on the site.

In a recent article I noted Dorothy Kilgallen asked “Why can’t I be the adorable one?”; the adorable one in the situation was Arlene Francis, her co-panelist on the game show ‘What’s My Line?’. It wasn’t a competition or an intentional attempt by Francis to be the charming and personable one; that was how she was.

A great many women are seen as the groundbreakers of Television; the name Arlene Francis doesn’t appear among those names to current generations. Arlene Francis was:

Hosted ‘Blind Date’ from 1949-1952 on ABC and then NBC, after being the radio host of the same show since 1943.
A panelist on ‘What’s My Line?’ from 1950 until 1975 on CBS.
The editor-in-chief and host of ‘Home’ from 1954-57, a one hour morning show that was a show for NBC viewers to compliment the ‘Today’ and ‘Tonight’ shows. She also stepped in for ‘Today’ show hosts as well as guest hosted the Tonight Show.
In 1954 she hosted the reality show ‘The Comeback Story’ on ABC.

If you read that closely, you see she was on all three networks at the same time.

And all of those were sidelines. She was also a Broadway star, movie actress, radio host, and author.

During the 1950s, Newsweek put her on the cover as the “first lady of television”. You need to remember something very important about this time; Lucille Ball was a big hit with ‘I Love Lucy’.

People naturally loved Arlene. She didn’t try or take herself too seriously to the point of not being able to have fun in front of the camera as herself. Then there was that strength you knew would come out when it needed to.

Her radio career predated television, and her The Arlene Francis Show ran from 1960 to 1984 where she interviewed people from her first guest in Rock Hudson through others such as Frank Sinatra.

Her husband wasn’t the tall, dark and handsome type, although a great Broadway actor. No, he was short, balding, slightly overweight, wore glasses, and an average sort looks wise, but highly intelligent. That was another part of her charm; she went for the real and what she liked, not image. She and Martin Gabel stayed married from 1946 until his death in 1986.

You don’t stay the love of the public for so long without charm. Dorothy Kilgallen was smart, tough, and personable enough, but you could see her trying hard to be something a bit more; she wanted acceptance in a way she wasn’t. On ‘What’s My Line?’, you would see Dorothy and Arlene alternate sitting next to Bennet Cerf, the founder and publisher of Random House. Dorothy would wear on Bennet’s nerves, and you can see him ignore her suggestions. Everyone wanted to sit next to Arlene. She was fun, and not intrusive.

I think Dorothy was never comfortable in her own skin, while Arlene was comfortable anywhere.

For a woman known for knowing so much, her life came to an end in 2001 from cancer and Alzheimer’s.

Santa by Moonshine

It came upon a Christmas Eve, when Santa was sniffly and blowing into his sleeve.

The reindeer had done run out of steam, for their feed for flying was chili pepper hot cocoa with cream.

The nine North Pole pundits of spirituous glee—trudged through the briars and more than one snow covered evergreen tree.

Dasher was close to stopping for the day; he was tired of pulling that big toy loaded sleigh.

Then what to his bleary sleet coated eyes should appear, but a one-room cabin with a 1970 blue Jeep Wagoneer.

Santa knocked on the door of that haven of rest, hoping he looked his jolly good best.

The door opened to reveal a true sight, a bearded main dressed head to toe in glowing bright white.

“Hello, there fellow, my name is Santa; I was wondering if you could give us shelter and some sparkling Grape Fanta?”

The man looked at the jolly old elf, from the top of his head down to his ample red felt covered shelf.

“I believe I may help with your winter wonderland plight, come in come in and I will bring about a true delight.”

A fire was blazing inside of that one big room, and it was quite toasty with eight reindeer and two men with whiskers like from a broom.

“What seems to have brought you to my place out here in such a storm?” The man did not waste time with settling down his ample form.

Santa looked around from his chair by the fire; the man over him wore flannel and denim for his Christmas Eve attire.

“The snow is a bit thick and our radar is full of hacker spam, then my reindeer ran out of juice from their flying dust infused special strawberry jam.”

The tall man nodded, as though this was a common thing. He circled the button on his shirt round and round like a ring.

“Then I am for certain got something you need, but it’s not some fancy special concocted reindeer flying feed.”

Dasher snorted, and sniffed, and nudged up to his weary but comfy boss. Santa listened and stood before old Dasher could give him a firm toss.

“It seems my fine fellows here would be interested to know, what it is you might have that will make them get up and go.”

A smile and wink and the man slipped out the back, Santa looked outside, but the snow covered every track.

He ate another bowl of some kind of stew; he had not asked what was in it, for fear of upsetting his crew.

The door banged open and in walked a snow heap; the white powder fell off after one giant leap.

“Now here is what I have that should help you get going, and you best do it now, because there is an increase in the snowing.”

Santa took the mason jar, and turned it to the side; it was then that he saw a transparent liquid inside.

“You think water will help on a night like this? If you think melted snow will work then I think your idea is a miss.”

Santa set the jar down by his chair next to the fire; the man rushed forward as if something was most dire.

“Put that next to something like a flame, and you’ll not have to worry about deliveries, and for that I don’t want the blame.”

It was then Santa got the hint of a clue; one eyebrow rose then with a knowledge they numbered two.

“Oh, ho, ho, ho, I believe I now see; and if you please let me borrow a spoon we’ll be letting you be.”

“Keep the silver, it’s stainless steel, I got it at a dollar store, it was quite a good deal.”

Santa have each of his antlered engines two big full spoons each, then put the jar far out of harms reach.

Each of the reindeer licked and flicked their tongue; the liquid energy was making their tasters feel a bit numb.

“That stuff will protect them from the cold as well; when they get to going you best hold on or there’ll be another kind of Santa story to tell.”

Outside the cabin, the two men hitched up the sleigh, and with a call of each name, the reindeer shot up and away.

The deliveries were made with time to spare; no one even knew presents were almost not there.

Arriving back home to his place way up north, Santa walked through his home and shouted and called forth.

His wife appeared with a surprised look on her face. “Dear, you’re home so soon, was it some kind of race?”

With a twinkle in his eye, and a jingle of his bells, the lights went out, and Mrs. Claus wondered if her man was under some spells.

A giggle and a tee hee, and off the hat went, and in the moonlight, you could make out the empty mason jar’s glint.

This is a photograph I took of a peculiar spider that was on a rock wall at a quarry where we performed a Christmas Concert on the weekend.

As most people know, Perth is rife with critters that crawl, bite and sting but I have never seen this particular spider before. Perhaps I have discovered a rare new species!!!

The Guidelines are simple.

Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com.
Or you can use the 3/5/3 style instead of 5/7/5.
What to do a little bit more with your Haiku? Read Haiku, Tanka, and Haibun. It’s all poetry to me. Learn the difference.
The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
Copy the link of your finished haiku URL in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. I will comment on your site. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put a the URL from the address above, if you like place it within your post. Long distance lovers with a secret romance
Some say it’s not worth givin’ a chance
But no one knows until that first dance
And are captured in their lover’s glance
And find it’s worth it

Dreams are chasin’ after a crazy moon
Feel a deep ache higher than the tallest sand dune
Wind sounding the ocean lovers’ tune
While we drift in bed, till well past noon
It’s all worth it
So worth it

Seven sensual sins under a sacred sun
Makin’ love till you say we’re done
You know I know I’m the fortunate one
And I know it’s not all about having fun
And you’re worth it.

Mirrored ceilings and satin sheets
Body oils and massages way down deep
Songs softly sung while I’m losin’ sleep
But I know true love doesn’t come cheap

With decades of writing behind me and daily learning of how to be a better writer, and by daily, I do mean constant, I wanted to give a way for current friends and future finders of this blog a way to push themselves to improve as well.

Through this challenge my hopes are:

you will find your voice
step out of comfort zones to discover a genre where your talent truly lies
perhaps make connections that will help you become a better writer

23:59 EST Wednesday. I will then have Thursday to complete reading the entries and compiling the links and such. I do read all entries. You can ask any of my Haiku Challenge family/community members.

I DO ASK THAT YOU:

Keep it PG as all ages do follow the blog and may click through and read the entries. (C0ntinue for exceptions.)
If you do write a piece of fiction that goes past the PG level, copy the link into the comments of this post and make a note of it being such and give the reasons you think it is, such as violence, sexual content, language/profanity.
No violence toward children by adults or predatory aspects toward children. I know you may have two kids have a fight. I get that, but I don’t want gratuitous violence such as glorifying bullying. Also I can see you having a kid kicking some bad guy in the face for some reason. I get it.

Challenge This Week: Write about a family gathering. I know that sounds like non-fiction but by writing pieces like this you tap into emotional and sensory experiences you use for other writings. Digging to China

Clarence tells a tale of something we probably all thought of when we were kids. 307 words and a 2.9 GL, this is right on track for being in the perspective of a child.

Not now but soon

A tragic story that is all too real. With emotions and dialogue that is spot on for the story, Willow’s first attempt at flash fiction is more than a success. 410 words and a 4.5 GL make this just the right level for the target audience.

A Beautiful Life

A wonderful nonsensical sort of tale about Spinach and a lonely young lady. I wonder if the spinach has anything to do with the lonely part? Although I love spinach, as does my son. 756 words at a GL of 6.4.

A fast pace hospital room scene. Judy has to protect her husband and her mother from revenge minded gang members. 589 words. GL of 2.7.

It will rain

You know, sometimes a story … well you can read this one and probably know where I was going. 209 words. GL of 4.3.

Candle in the Wind

The hanging tree

A story about school kids and dealing with a common aspect of life these days. 1409 words. 2.2 GL.

The End or a New Beginning

A couple+A party+Late Again=What? Meredith’s first trip into the challenge. 441 words and 3.2 GL. You would swear from the amount of emotion and storytelling there would be a larger word count.

Florence chose a poem that is a story at the same time.

We have a story of an event that will haunt a person forever. Good imagery and pace. 287 words, 4.4 GL.

An interesting story. Know Greg as I do I can see one possible reason for a story like this. It’s still a tough story to put out there. But I think it is a needed one. I believe parents should read them one for sure. 1441 words and 4.7 GL. I think this one read quicker than the word count might imply.

Hello Everyone,

I want to let all of you know my Historical Adventure debut novel Amber Wake: Gabriel Falling now has a release date of February 14, 2016. Yes, Valentine’s Day. P.S. Bartlett, my co-author, and I want things to be quality. We are not rushing things for a Christmas release. A wonderful day yes, but for our first collaboration, we want it to be done right.

With that knowledge, I’ll be needing Book Blog Tour Hosts. You’ll be seeing information here on my blog leading up to the release date, but I need your help. The best way to sell a book is by word of mouth. My friends to tell their friends. One way to start that telling is by hosting a Book Tour.

I will be preparing some posts you can share. Or if you are interested in sending me questions for an interview that would be great as well. If you’ll fill out the form below, that way I can keep easy track of who is willing and what they would like to do. I like keeping volunteers and the like more between the two of us rather than in comments, I hope you don’t mind.

I have a few lined up already, but the more the merrier for my first ever book launch. I so want this to be an amazing experience. You have no idea what it’s like to have a book coming out only 2 years after suffering a concussion, losing the ability to talk, write, my memory, and so much more.

Here are various Blog Topics you might look at to get an idea that I could write about if you are not interested in asking interview questions. There are also sites you can search for with various questions to ask an author. Some are serious, and some are goofy. James A. Michener: “I’m an excellent rewriter.”

“I think the crucial thing in the writing career is to find what you want to do and how you fit in. What somebody else does is of no concern whatever except as an interesting variation.” – James A. Michener

James A. Michener may just be my hero when it comes to beginning a career. Why? His first book came out when he was 40.

“Sitting there in the darkness, illuminated only by the flickering lamplight, I visualized the aviation scenes in which I had participated, the landing beaches I’d seen, the remote outposts, the exquisite islands with bending palms, and especially the valiant people I’d known: the French planters, the Australian coast watchers, the Navy nurses, the Tonkinese laborers, the ordinary sailors and soldiers who were doing the work, and the primitive natives to whose jungle fastnesses I had traveled.”

This was Michener while on assignment in the Pacific during WWII. These notes led to his first novel Tales of the South Pacific. It won the Pulitzer, became a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical as South Pacific, and was turned into a movie of the same name. Very nice for a first novel.

Michener and I are alike in a number of ways. He went to college for English and History. I went for History and Education. And then there is this quote; “I’m not a very good writer, but I’m an excellent rewriter.”

I haven’t researched exactly what he meant by that, but if he’s like me he gets the idea down then grows the piece into a behemoth through his research, and that is where Michener and I are a lot alike.

I’ve seen video of Michener and that is what led me to choose him for this article. Michener, in regards to writing, is similar to how I approach my writing. He did a ton of research and was into details. You learned from a Michener read.

Some people don’t like going for the realism, or they don’t want to go through the trouble of finding out what street a person would travel in a city. They might say, they took a left or make up a name. Details give credibility. Details give people a way to become connected to a work. Details create fans who want to travel the path a favorite character traveled.

I doubt I will ever write books that are 800 or 1000 pages long. I’m not counting it out, but I have the attention problems of creativity and concussion combined. I’m working on two stories at the same time right now, with three others marinating until I get back to them to do the next drafts. Hopefully one is not far away from submission time.

Married three times, his third wife, in a way, helped inspire one of Michener’s big successes, Sayonara in 1954. His wife, Mari Yoriko Sabusawa was an American but she and her Japanese parents suffered the internment camps in America in WWII. The two married in 1955 and remained together until her death in 1994.

In 1997, Michener chose to stop his daily dialysis in fighting his terminal kidney disease. His wife was gone, and he had accomplished all he wanted to do. He left the copyrights to his works to his alma mater.

This final quote says something a great number of people should consider.

This week, see if you can do opposite meanings in your two formed sentences. If your first sentence is about how lovely something is, the second sentences should be how horrible it is. That was an example, not the two things you need use. I’m not enforcing anything.

Challenge #75

The Guidelines are simple.

Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com.
Or you can use the 3/5/3 style instead of 5/7/5.
What to do a little bit more with your Haiku? Read Haiku, Tanka, and Haibun. It’s all poetry to me. Learn the difference.
The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
Copy the link of your finished haiku URL in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. I will comment on your site. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back?
