The Guidelines are simple.
- Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. The link above has links within it to articles about how to write Haibun, Tanka, and even a new form I created called Freku. You can also do the 3/5/3 form if you like. Write, share, and have fun. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com. (You would be surprised at how many syllables some words actually have.)
- The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
- Copy the link of your finished haiku URL in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put the URL link in the address bar of this post, if you like, within your post. Your inclusion of the link encourages others to try the challenges out, be creative, and join a community to find friends and more followers (hopefully). RonovanWrites 77th #Weekly #Haiku #Poetry Review
Since so many people participated in the challenge this week, in spite of the Holidays and vacations going on around the world, I decided I could at least take a break from having a nervous breakdown over the final phases of my upcoming debut novel release and do a right proper Review. Wish me luck, and may the force be with you.
If you do not see your Haiku listed below, make certain the ping back or your comment with the link is in the comments of the Challenge Post. If you posted after 11 AM EST Sunday, I unfortunately have a family thing to go to and will update the review with any additions when I return. This year I won’t be checking for those who may have missed notifying the Challenge Post in some way of participation. Unfortunately it takes way too long to complete the review in that manner. My apologies if that offends anyone.

When you visit you will find it difficult to move past the photo used to reach the Haiku, and this time I think it’s more difficult than usual. (I thought about saying difficulter but that sounded wrong for a couple of reasons.) I would like to end this year of great challenges with a great big thank you to Ronovan for hosting this challenge which has been the source of so much creativity and wonderful conversations amongst the devotees of haiku.
Ronovan’s recommendations for writing haiku are quite specific and I like this especially as it adds to the mental challenge to adhere to the structure of 5 7 5 syllables and ideally 2 separate sentences formed from lines 1 and 2 combined and 2 and 3 combined.
Petrarch is known for his Petrarchan Sonnet form and I think we should know this particular…

Santa by Moonshine

It came upon a Christmas Eve, when Santa was sniffly and blowing into his sleeve.
The reindeer had done run out of steam, for their feed for flying was chili pepper hot cocoa with cream.
The nine North Pole pundits of spirituous glee—trudged through the briars and more than one snow covered evergreen tree.
Dasher was close to stopping for the day; he was tired of pulling that big toy loaded sleigh.
Then what to his bleary sleet coated eyes should appear, but a one-room cabin with a 1970 blue Jeep Wagoneer.
Santa knocked on the door of that haven of rest, hoping he looked his jolly good best.
The door opened to reveal a true sight, a bearded main dressed head to toe in glowing bright white.
“Hello, there fellow, my name is Santa; I was wondering if you could give us shelter and some sparkling Grape Fanta?”
The man looked at the jolly old elf, from the top of his head down to his ample red felt covered shelf.
“I believe I may help with your winter wonderland plight, come in come in and I will bring about a true delight.”
A fire was blazing inside of that one big room, and it was quite toasty with eight reindeer and two men with whiskers like from a broom.
“What seems to have brought you to my place out here in such a storm?” The man did not waste time with settling down his ample form.
Santa looked around from his chair by the fire; the man over him wore flannel and denim for his Christmas Eve attire.
“The snow is a bit thick and our radar is full of hacker spam, then my reindeer ran out of juice from their flying dust infused special strawberry jam.”
The tall man nodded, as though this was a common thing. He circled the button on his shirt round and round like a ring.
“Then I am for certain got something you need, but it’s not some fancy special concocted reindeer flying feed.”
Dasher snorted, and sniffed, and nudged up to his weary but comfy boss. Santa listened and stood before old Dasher could give him a firm toss.
“It seems my fine fellows here would be interested to know, what it is you might have that will make them get up and go.”
A smile and wink and the man slipped out the back, Santa looked outside, but the snow covered every track.
He ate another bowl of some kind of stew; he had not asked what was in it, for fear of upsetting his crew.
The door banged open and in walked a snow heap; the white powder fell off after one giant leap.
“Now here is what I have that should help you get going, and you best do it now, because there is an increase in the snowing.”
Santa took the mason jar, and turned it to the side; it was then that he saw a transparent liquid inside.
“You think water will help on a night like this? If you think melted snow will work then I think your idea is a miss.”
Santa set the jar down by his chair next to the fire; the man rushed forward as if something was most dire.
“Put that next to something like a flame, and you’ll not have to worry about deliveries, and for that I don’t want the blame.”
It was then Santa got the hint of a clue; one eyebrow rose then with a knowledge they numbered two.
“Oh, ho, ho, ho, I believe I now see; and if you please let me borrow a spoon we’ll be letting you be.”
“Keep the silver, it’s stainless steel, I got it at a dollar store, it was quite a good deal.”
Santa have each of his antlered engines two big full spoons each, then put the jar far out of harms reach.
Each of the reindeer licked and flicked their tongue; the liquid energy was making their tasters feel a bit numb.
“That stuff will protect them from the cold as well; when they get to going you best hold on or there’ll be another kind of Santa story to tell.”
Outside the cabin, the two men hitched up the sleigh, and with a call of each name, the reindeer shot up and away.
The deliveries were made with time to spare; no one even knew presents were almost not there.
Arriving back home to his place way up north, Santa walked through his home and shouted and called forth.
His wife appeared with a surprised look on her face. “Dear, you’re home so soon, was it some kind of race?”

This is a photograph I took of a peculiar spider that was on a rock wall at a quarry where we performed a Christmas Concert on the weekend.
As most people know, Perth is rife with critters that crawl, bite and sting but I have never seen this particular spider before. Perhaps I have discovered a rare new species!!!

The Guidelines are simple.
- Take the two words and write a Haiku. I use Haiku in English as my style, which is 5 syllables for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the third, but you can use what you like. For syllable help visit HowManySyllables.com.
- Or you can use the 3/5/3 style instead of 5/7/5.
- What to do a little bit more with your Haiku? Read Haiku, Tanka, and Haibun. It’s all poetry to me. Learn the difference.
- The two words can be used as you like. Words have different definitions and you can use the definitions you like. You can even use a synonym word as long as it does not change the meaning. Go to Thesaurus.com for Synonym help.
- Copy the link of your finished haiku URL in a comment so we can all go and visit your site to see what you have done. I will comment on your site. You can do a ping back. What’s a ping back? Put a the URL from the address above, if you like place it within your post. This is simply a prompt and challenge to encourage people to try Haiku and give some a prompt and a place to share in comments so we can find each other. Long distance lovers with a secret romance
Some say it’s not worth givin’ a chance
But no one knows until that first dance
And are captured in their lover’s glance
And find it’s worth it
Dreams are chasin’ after a crazy moon
Feel a deep ache higher than the tallest sand dune
Wind sounding the ocean lovers’ tune
While we drift in bed, till well past noon

Freku is not really a challenge, but for those trying it out, I thought I would list them here. FREKU
A bit of explanation here, for one, this is not a Haibun. This is my new form of Haiku. A free prose poem combined with a closing Haiku that retells the original poem in the Haiku form. NEW FORM of Haiku & Poetry.
What do you get when you combine Free Verse Poetry with Haiku? A new form of poetry I call Freku. I’ve looked around and haven’t found this concept anywhere, but there is always that possibility of it being an old idea.
Instructions:
- Write a poem with stanzas four lines each.
- The first two stanzas should rhyme.
- The next two stanzas should rhyme.
- Continue in this manner for each stanza until completed with poem.
- Close with a Haiku of 5/7/5 or 3/5/3 syllable structure that is basically the prose piece in three lines.
By taking a standard poem (And I do mean a normal poem, regardless of my example I did.) and then attempting to sum that poem up in the three lines of a Haiku, you have quite a challenge. It is almost like developing a proverb of the poem.
I attempted my first one for a post this past Monday titled Gasps for Breath. Originally the beginning poem was a standard rhyming free verse piece. Then I decided to challenge myself and cut each line down to form Haiku like stanzas. (I only include this to explain MY FREKU, not what you would do if you wanted to try it.)

Every two lines rhyme. That is how I did it. Call it my daily awareness of entries into the Fiction Challenge where I look for those pesky adverbs and dialogue tags, or my glutton for punishment, but I enjoyed cutting out the fat of the poem I created, maintaining rhymes, and maybe ending with a better poem.
After I created the idea of the poem and haiku combination, I went looking for other possible similar creations. I found the Chōka, a form Japaense poetry, or Waka. Waka means Japanese poem.
The Chōka is, or was, a narrative Waka in the 5-7-5-7-5-7-5-7-7 form during the Nara period. Think of this as an extended Tanka (5-7-5-7-7). The Chōka died out as a poetic form by the 10th Century (the beginning of the Heian period), and was replaced by the Tanka.
My inaugural piece, Gasps for Breath, was created initially as a free form poem with no aim at anything but expression. Somewhere along the way I decided to sum it up in a Haiku using the challenge words from my weekly haiku challenge. That led me to the creation of the Freku. It took longer to develop the name than the actual poem piece. I chose several names but all were taken for either poetry forms or some very inappropriate things. I’m still not completely happy with the name but it does give some clue to what type of poetry it is.
It has been pointed out to me that this is similar to a Haibun, which combines prose in the various forms with a closing/summary Haiku. For my purpose of this exercise I intend to stick to poetry without any forms of prose outside of poetry.
The Freku is not a new challenge prompt idea. Some have linked to it with their own versions, and that is somewhat humbling to think people liked the idea that much. If you want to do a Freku and share it, you can always link it to the Weekly Haiku Challenge, and I’ll include the link in the review. It doesn’t have to relate to the challenge prompts. It would be the least I could do for anyone taking something I came up with and trying it out.
