My Sunday Thought: For Others

Philippians is one of my favorite writings of the Bible. I know many refer to them as books of the Bible, but they were letters and essays when first written and only became ‘books’ after being bound together in a book called the Bible.

No, I am not going to make a big deal about semantics today, it’s just one of my little quirks. That and the numbered verses and the chapter divisions. I really just enjoy the words in the original flow, without man’s interruptions. Man can mess up some beautiful things, you know?

But Philippians has some of my favorite sentences in it. One of them is one of the first I ever referred to as a life ‘verse’.

Philippians 1:19

“Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, 19 for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.”

Whatever is happening to me, I count as something I can use to make me stronger in my relationship with God and make me a better person overall moving forward each day. It might be a good fortune or a day of body ravaging pain but through each I move forward with the one constant in my life. And I use all for my betterment.

But that sentence is not what was  given today for me to think about and ponder upon. No, I was given instead;

Philippians 2:3

1Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

I found the sentence today interesting. I’m not overly sure why. Okay, perhaps I do know why.

Think about it like this. Say you go on vacation and you have to leave your house and expensive things behind but you are the only one you can count on, the only one you can trust. Would you actually be able to relax on vacation or even take that vacation?

Now think about if your neighbors cared about you, watched out for you and each other, each others property and safety. Would you be able to go on vacation and relax?

Yes, I know what most people think of when they read the verse. We are supposed to put other people before us as Christ put others before himself. But there are many benefits even before we get to heaven we can receive if we all just did as this verse said.

I like to think I consider others before I do myself at times. No, I am sure I don’t all the time. Just wanted to say that before anyone decided to think I was being all braggadocious or something. I know I care about my blogs and my writing and the happiness of those of you reading what I write. But I do sometimes put things on delay to help here and there. Why do I do that?

I do some things around Blog World that people would ask to be paid for. You know what? I enjoy doing the things I do. I rarely, if ever have said no to helping someone. Why? In all honesty, I’ve never thought to say no. Maybe afterwards or in the middle of something that is taxing during a fibro flare, I might get that “I so regret saying yes” feeling, but the person’s happiness makes it better.

Don’t do things for others for recognition. I haven’t told you what I’ve done or for whom. Anything I’ve ever written with someone I’ve not wanted my name there but it’s been pretty much insisted upon at times. I like just helping and seeing the person get good results . . . if they do. Most of the time I really don’t do that much except just spark an idea.

Anyway. Help others. Put others needs before your own. It sounds like a big thing but it isn’t always. If you’re a boss, stand up for your employees. I did that when I was a boss. I ended up being stabbed in the back by one of those I stood up for time and again, but here I am . . . doing what I love most, writing. All works out for my deliverance.

Until Next Thoughtday,

Mark Lowry some Sunday Thought Humor and Aha moments.

For those who read a recent Haiku I wrote that mentioned the word bowels, every time I hear that word I think of this bit of humor and scripture. Mark Lowry is a talented comedian and singer. He is the writer of a very popular song called Mary Did You Know. He was part of a group called the Gaither Vocal Band, the first Christian concert I ever went to.

He’s hilarious and a storyteller. I hope you enjoy.

#NaNoWriMo Day 1: My #Writing #Tips for Today. “Stop with an idea.”

Yes, it’s NaNoWriMo time. So what am I doing instead of working feverishly away at a novel? Why I am here with a tip about writing away feverishly at a novel.

I had fun announcing my entry into NaNoWriMo. I like to play around with the fear factor. Yes, I am a little nervous, never having participated before, but I’m okay. I got the know how and stuff and great people to help along the way. It’s just getting used to the what to do on the site I have to deal with. But that doesn’t mean I am not going to help any of you that want to write, NaNo or not.

So here are my writing tips for today.

Stop With an Idea.

I wrote about this quite some time ago in an article about how to avoid writer’s block. I thought it would be a good idea to rehash it now.

One quick and simple tip, okay two.

Don’t stop writing at the end of a chapter

When you stop at the end, it’s kind of the end. Yes you have a cliffhanger, most likely, but then you stop, your energy is spent. You walk away from it, don’t do that!

That leads to tip two.

Leave yourself with an idea for tomorrow

Don’t write until you are out of ideas for the day. Stop short. You have a great scene you are doing, perhaps you are coming up on the cliff hanger ending to a chapter. Stop. When you come back the next time you have that cliffhanger to write and then you have the energy to write on through the beginning of the next and then however long you feel like it.  Just always stop with an idea in your head. Don’t walk away empty headed. Always have an idea to come back to and an idea to play around in your head while you are away.

Day of a Dream

Darkness has fallen and the doors no longer shake.

Jack O Lanterns have been brought in and witches pulled up by the stake.

Sugar has filled every hollow of child and man.

Excited minds and heartbeats are falling to sleep if they can.

But have you wondered what happens next,

In the world minutes after that night of eve?

Did you think this all came about,

Just to practice trickery for treats to deceive?

The spirits form from wisps of smoke.

Their cackle calls pulled from a drunkards choke.

Why do they come on this night back to earth?

And are they the kindly or those of no worth?

They stagger about through the streets and the paths.

They venture into the quiet to hide their vengeful wrath.

Some wonder why there are those who go missing.

And some wonder just before at the sound of that hissing.

The rustle of a leaf, the wind blowing of course.

As shoulders are driven to earth by inhumanly force.

Bodies try to scream as skin is ripped to shreds.

Last thoughts of how they wished they had returned to their beds.

Feet pass by the darkened garden spot,

The sniffling wet nose drawn to a certain spot.

The master pulls with force to move them on their way.

Perhaps next time on the next All Hallows Day.

The sound of a distant whimpering and a terrible scream,

And the smoke formed spirit knows, for those two, there will be no next Halloween.

The sound comes to its ears at the approach of another  present for its once per year day of a dream.

Proud to be?

Touchy subject time. Hot button issue. Politically Correct Stretch Alert.

Call it what you will but here I go . . .

Straight Talk with Ronovan

I’m not tuned into a lot of things. I don’t study the news. I don’t sit in front of a TV . . . ever. I scan headlines as my email is attempting to log in. Friends send me emails of things they want me to know about. I see the ads for things as my morning devotions load or a funny clip of a cat slowly progresses to the beginning of hilarious leap attempt fails. Slippery surfaces equals face plants felines! Just saying. (I really need to get a video of Spunky using the windshield of the car as a slide . . . intentionally doing so.)

On Twitter I noticed a trending thing. “Proud To Be Gay” Tim Cook . I don’t often click the trends, usually if it has to do with sports I might ‘IF’ it is of someone I have an interest in or if it is something I know a friend of mine might look at. Yes, I do like to attempt to keep up on things my friends like, sometimes, occasionally, okay–at times. So why did I click this one?

I had no idea who Tim Cook was.  I can hear it now, my blogging pal Hugh is like “Oh Ronovan, you had no idea who the Apple of my Apple Eye World was?” For those of you who don’t know who Hugh is, he is into everything Apple. He walks into a store and they already have the purchase ready and he didn’t even know he was planning to buy anything. His favorite celebrity child is Apple from that Coldplay guy and Iron Man’s girlfriend.

That’s pretty much it. I just wanted to see why it was particularly trend worthy why this person over another person announcing they are ‘Proud to be gay’.

Then I see it is the whole CEO of Apple and the millionaire thing. I see how it would be difficult to be open at that point in life what with all the consequences of losing a job and financial security. Yes, a touch of sarcasm there, but bear with me. I know there are friends and family to be concerned about and perhaps some public backlash against Apple to consider. I read why he did it and I admire him for it. He didn’t do it for himself but for others. I don’t think anyone should live in fear from others of what they are.

You are what you are, right? It’s a thing. Your thing. A nice gay person or a heterosexual A-Hole? Who would  you rather sit down to lunch with? I’ve had lunch with both, and lunch with the reverse. I’ll take the nice of whatever every time. And I will likely, and have, told off the pushy A-Hole of either kind when they go to far. And no, I did not use any profanity.

But back to where we began this aside, then I thought of the line workers in factories who are gay and afraid to ‘come out’ because if they do they might lose a livelihood they can’t afford to lose. Proud? Yes. Positioned to do anything about it? Not in their eyes.

I’ve worked with a lot of gay people over the years. I use the word gay because writing homosexual is just a very long word to type for me right now. To me, I like to think of gay as being what it was originally meant to be, happy.

Okay, another rabbit chased and now back on the main trail . . . again. I’ve decided to say what I am Proud of Being.

I am Proud to be a Man who loves God, Humans, The Female Species, Family, Friends, Children, Writing, and Great Foods. (The order varies at times. Sometimes Humans kind of fall down the list depending on the Human I am thinking of. And a great stir fry right about now, yes I am writing this during the morning, would be like better than all of the above, okay better than everything but that first one. Sorry Rhianna. Yeah, she may be weird and freaky at times, but you can’t deny she’s gorgeous. Wow, even I don’t know where that last one came from.)

OOO, I forgot, I love my Cats.

Now, I see no reason people can’t make public announcements of what they are Proud of.

Today, here in the comments, take a moment to say what you are Proud Of.

Because it’s Proud Friday here on RonovanWrites.

The Spunky & The Pumpkin Meet.

For those of you who have never met My Pal Spunky, let me introduce you to him.

My little white tiger.Spunky, the little white tiger was the first of his siblings to do everything and without a fear in his snowy pure heart. And thus was born a name.

He learned many things along the way, one of which was taught him by his mother Kitty.

Gray cat with glow in the dark green eyes. You know what you taught him Kitty. Kitty helped me during my early months after my fall in my home. I assure you, she is much more intelligent than this picture would imply.

What did she teach Spunky?

Kat-fuThe art of Cat-Fu.

Kitty In ReposeMomma did not say knock her out, Spunky. but Spunky was trained to face any challenge or surprise encounter that came before him.

Then one day Spunky was roused from his resting slumber.

Spunky_In_Chair.jpgSpunky had never seen the inside of a pumpkin before, let alone one with a light emitting from it. And Spunky, having earned his name decided to investigate.

spunky_pumpkin1 A simple touch and glimpse did not suffice his cattious curiosity. Therefore, he decided to investigate further.

spunky_pumpkin2Exactly what he saw or heard that day no one knows, but from the expression on his face, it must have been something eye opening.

spunky_pumpkin3Not long afterwards, later that evening a mysterious image appeared on the carved tree of the pumpkin, looking oddly enough like a cat with a wizards hat. Striped tail and all.

What have I done? #NaNoWriMo ? Yes, I signed up. AIIEIIEIIE!

What have I done?

What have I gotten myself into?

Yes, true believers, Ronovan Writes has entered the . . . dun dun dun . . .

NaNoWriMo Zone!!!

(cue Twilight Zone music)

NaNoWriMo.jpg(now cue Lost in Space TV show music)

Several people had asked me about this odd sounding thing. Me? Where would I find the time? I am not really that good a writer. I call myself a hack. I can write short pieces. But a full novel? Then, here I am in the middle of a Fibro Flare and they catch me. I entered.

50,000 words in 30 days? A novel?

Why pray tell am I even mentioning this?

Because I may be scared scarce around here for a bit. You know me though, I’ll be here just as much, the idiot that I am. I just don’t know when to quit. I’ll be perhaps sharing my exploits in the NaNoWriMo Zone with all of you. Wish me luck and an increase in the dosage of my medications, I actually have an appointment tomorrow and very likely this will happen as they try to find a maintenance level. What good timing.

Me, doing NaNoWriMo. What have I gotten myself into?

Much Knee Shaking

Ode to the Eternally Dwelling

An ode to a thing that is so wrong is an ode to a thing that has lasted so long.
What could this thing be that cannot be ever broken?
Eternally dwelling in the crevices of a million dark moments like a token.
Yet no one having taken notice will ever to give a word, never to be spoken.

Is it a wish, a delight, or some type of torturous device?
Does it take hold of you and seizing you like a vice?
Cemented indefinitely as though planted by a plan.
What can one do but settle in and give in to the man.

A cyclical trace has been tracked through time.
Like a 19th Century unsolved London crime.
It does not deny what it is, no it admits.
Still we find ourselves tangled up in it’s enchantment in fits.

No, not I, I still remain and resist.
For I have never been one to give into this midnight tryst.
I alone stand forth ready to sound the horn.
As evil ones pass out last year’s uneaten devil spawned candy corn.

Respectfully Much

Jen’s Top 10 NaNoWriMo Tips

Yeah, how convenient. Jenna with tips for NaNoWriMo. And not participating just because she is editing her book that’s been optioned as a film. oooo muahahahaha Okay. The woman knows of what she speaks. Check. It. Out.

jenspenden's avatarJen's Pen Den

Lately, a lot of people have been asking me if I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this year. The answer, unfortunately, is no. Since I’m in the middle of editing my current WIP, I don’t have the time to join in. However, I wanted to offer up some advice to those of you who have accepted the daunting task of writing 50K words in one month.

Jen’s Top 10 NaNoWriMo Tips

1. Decide why you are participating

“I signed up just because.”

No, no, no! Don’t say this when people ask you why you’re doing NaNoWriMo. Give yourself a valid, reliable, motivating reason to participate:

“I’ve been slacking lately and need a kick in the butt.”

“I have a great idea for a novel.”

“People say NaNo’s impossible. I’m gonna prove them wrong!”

Whatever your personal motive, make sure you have one. Don’t sign up for NaNoWriMo just to sign up. If you do, I can almost guarantee…

Surviving the Blogging Dry Spell.

“HELLO?! It’s dry in here!” My brain screamed at the top of its . . . whatever it has to scream at the top of with.

“’Sup?” I asked.

“Dude, we got nothin’.”

“What do you mean, nothin‘?”

“Seriously? I’m your brain and you are asking me what that means?” It asked. It sounded ticked.

I waited a moment, gathering my thoughts.

“Dude, I’m your brain, I know what you’re thinking. Yes, I mean we have no more ideas up here. You need to get your butt in gear and stimulate us somehow,” it said.

“Okay,” I said. “You got any ideas?”

“You are a freakin’ froo froo. I just told you we’re dried up and you ask if I have any ideas.”

“Oh yeah. Okay . . . wait, then how am I supposed to come up with something if you have no ideas for me to come up with ideas?” I asked, realizing the real dilemma.

“Just figure it out. I’m taking a nap.”

Surviving the Blogging Dry Spell . . . Or How to plan for one.

Yes, the above is a real conversation I’ve had–a few times. Don’t commit judge me!

Remember that feeling when you first created your blog . . . and immediately wanted to change the name of it? And that was after you sat there 20 minutes coming up with the first name. Nah, I’m just kidding about the changing the name part—a little.

We had that giddy feeling of having a presence on the internet. We were now going to take over the world share our thoughts with others.

Then–dun dun dun.

We had to write our first blog post and, yes, we froze.

We were excited but our brains started hurting because we thought this was the be-all-end-all of our blogging career. The future relied on that first post. DOOM was on the horizon and we were freaking out and regretting we ever signed up for the Blog World Life!!!!

Boy, were we wrong. Drama Diva much? I get like that at times. Hey, we all have a touch of diva in us.

But that excitement is something we want to keep going. And wo/man, is it difficult at times. And you know what? It’s okay. It happens, just go with it.

You might look at my blog and wonder how I would know about a lack of excitement in blogging and finding that energy to create something new. All you see is the AMOUNT of articles/posts I have.

Variety is the spice of life, folks.

I do poetry, humor pieces, opinion pieces, post videos, rants, stories and I even interview bloggers and at one point on RonovanWrites I did Author Interviews, I’ve started a new site for that though.

Some sites like to do just one type of thing. If that’s the case, then keep in mind you might run into a dry spell. I said might? You WILL run into a dry spell. Even with variety it WILL happen.

How do you make it through a dry spell and get that excitement back?

  • Write while you are excited and hold some of those things in reserve. Don’t put everything out like a maniac like I have done. I’ve put out enough for two years worth of posts. In the beginning I would put it out as it came. Because the thought was that you needed content content content. But the habit you start is the habit you keep. Then I came to my senses and began to go ahead and schedule something for each day moving forward until I am done with that creative flow. I also have drafts of things I’ve done and folders on my computer with things to pull from if I need to.
  • Visit blogs and find inspiration there. I said find inspiration, NOT copy. There are times I will read something and think a few things; 1) That word used, I like that and can do something with it, 2) That turn of a phrase brings a memory to mind, or 3) That is just wrong and I need to write something factual about something along those lines. I don’t take an idea and then make it my own. Never do that. If you do something with an idea, give credit to whoever it was and then go with it.
  • Have a Reblog day of some of your favorite posts you’ve found and make that part of your regular schedule. Why? It allows you time to actually visit blogs when you might normally be writing because you think it’s all about you. And if you plan to do that, make sure to be someone who reads reblogs as well. Why? I’ve found that reblogs aren’t the biggest traffic inviters on my site. I try, but most times it just doesn’t work. Maybe I don’t present it right. But Reblogging does a lot of things. It helps you rest, and it gives your friends another outlet for their creativity and it shows your enjoyment of what they do. So if you are reading this, expect some reblogs here, and not just from my LitWorldInterviews site.
  • Be open to anything. Even if you do only blog one type of thing, be open how to interpret things to fit your content type. I created a Wordless Haiku for Photography even though I am not a Photography but I love seeing what people do with it.
  • Spend a day commenting on blogs. I tell you, having a conversation with your fellow bloggers can be a great stress reliever.
  • Read your comments on your blog posts. There are ideas waiting there for you.
  • Take a break. Yes, take a break. Who says you have to post every day? Take a mental break and recharge. Go out into the world and look around, pay attention, and write what you see.

There are a lot more things you can do, but only you know what they are. Just know that a Dry Spell in Blogging does not mean to stop Blogging all together. It happens to everyone. Dry Spell might even be the wrong words to use. You might just be going through a Down Spell, or a Blah Spell in your energy and you THINK it’s a Dry Spell.

Give it some time and then you’ll be fine. Don’t put a time limit on it. Don’t set deadlines for yourself ever. Deadlines are a killer in blogging. Blog because you want to blog and blog when you want to blog.

Well, that’s about it for me this week. My brain has said “stop now before you get into that you are stretching it too thin, Ronovan  zone”.

See Y’all Next Time

Awesome Blog Name of the Day: Poetic Parfait by @christybis

Spotlight rightSpotlight left

I just had to share this Blog Name

Poetic Parfait

from

Here is just the beginning of her about page.

Welcome.

Sit down and stay awhile. Hungry? Let me grab you something. Poetic Parfait is a delicious treat for the mind.

Read poetry, enter discussions about the poetic word, listen to music, and embrace words that intend to inspire.

I began Poetic Parfait in 2011, and the amount of support it receives on a daily basis humbles me. I began to write poetry at this site as a way to help myself get through a period of depression. As I typed the lines, I found they helped me work through my feelings and darkness that I felt around me.

RonovanWrites Weekly Wordless Haiku Challenge #16 Candy&Fruit

Wordless Haiku ChallengeI first want to thank DazzlingWhimsy for creating this badge for the challenge.

#16

The rules are simple: For how to write a Haiku in English and using the 5/7/5 syllable pattern click here.

No words or numbers of any kind can appear in the images you use. This includes sign language . . . of any kind.

You can use just pictures and not put them in the format I have them here. I was being creative. The point of this is to have fun.

Moon Shadow of a Woman Tango DancersHeartbeat Stumbling Sign Man Falling Men Going in a BuildingHands in Shape of Heart Two arms with infinity tattoos

This is an example of one I created.

The Haiku was:

Moon Shadow Dancers

Heartbeats Stumble, falling in

Love Infinity

I know, not the best but it was better then the first one I posted.

Here’s the challenge; You created your own wordless Haiku for Wednesday or any day really, then either post a link in the comments here for everyone that visits to go see and/or ping back (or copy the URL for this post into your Haiku post) to this post in your Haiku post.

I will read it and comment on it. Once I comment come get the badge.

If some of you would like a theme to prompt you what to begin thinking of you can perhaps use. . .

Candy & Fruit

What do the words mean to you, and how can you connect the two words through that second line? You do not have to do the prompt, it is just a prompt to make you start thinking of things.

RonovanWrites Weekly #Haiku Prompt Challenge #16 Haunt & Release

ronovan_writes_haiku_prompt_badge_autumn_2014Badge provided by Me for this time around.

The 16th Haiku Prompt Challenge!

For a refresher or how to write Haiku in English click here. But you can use whatever Haiku style you want to. As long as you, do a Haiku.

For Tips and Guidelines refreshers click here.

Something to keep in mind about a Haiku. Usually it is elemental in nature, but I don’t stick to that. There are two things I do like to see and they are; 1) Haiku that can be broken into two sentences with the middle line of the three lines being the commonly used part and 2) Opposite meanings in the first and last sentences.

Before you start!

I have links that will help you out. Remember for Haiku in English the total syllables are 5 for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the last. I don’t really hold people to that for this but if you want to do it in the 5/7/5 manner, the traditional way, then try that. One link I have for you is . . . howmanysyllables.com. Simply type in the word and find out how many syllables it has. Also for synonyms and antonyms go to thesaurus.com, I find it useful for finding a word to fit the meaning when syllables are not working out right.

This weeks two words to use in some form, meaning you can use another word that means the same thing are:

Haunt & Release

My Example

Memories haunt me,

In times of least expecting,

My burdens released.

.

DEADLINE: Noon on Sunday New York Time.

(I hate doing deadlines, but it takes quite a while to complete the rewind.)

There are now things called “A RONOVAN’S CHOICE!” which simply means a Haiku that either touched me or was a stand out Haiku in structure and meaning.

Much respect

Ronovan
