In a typical college romance novel, he’d be a gorgeous but troubled sex god who’d cure all my deep-seated psych issues with a good, hard fuck. I’d smell his misogyny and abusive tendencies from miles off but my brain would turn to hormone soup, because abs. That’s the formula. Broken girl + bad boy = sexual healing.

I wish I could say I wrote the above quote, but alas I did not. It comes from author Leah Raeder, and in just a few sentences she sums up everything that is wrong with New Adult fiction today – and why I was hesitant to label my new novel as such. With certain genres come certain expectations, and today’s expectations for young adult romance are undeniably influenced by Fifty Shades of Grey.

The question is why.

Not Quick Enough (A Poem of Tragedy Explained)

I hear your voicepoetry loss

Two words

They hammer at the wall

Of my mind’s death

Heaven sent

Or heart found

I am pulled from the darkness

I breathe

I grieve

I mourn

I want the death again

Why this torture for me

Why the agony of this loss

Why so here and so not

Why

Days of pleading prevail

Please, God bring my ease

Please, God bring me release

Please, God break my mind again

Please, God

Knowing but still nothing

Two words

Freeing me from death

Condemning me to worse

Why were you taken

Why

Where is the never ending joy

Where is my peace

Why does my heart need ache

Why every day

Free me from this tearing of my soul

The story of a poem. Think of a man who is in the hospital and unconscious. He hears a voice calling to him, he sees a face. He sees a little girl’s face. He opens his eyes to a place he doesn’t know, with a broken mind. The little girl isn’t there. Where is she? The little girl was never born. She called out to the man. It wasn’t his turn. She used what she could to tell him it just wasn’t his time yet.

Flash forward and the man remembers about the little girl. He remembers who the little girl is. He wants it to be his time. But his time is not quick enough. He wants the memory to go away. But it won’t go away quick enough.

I have seen comments to this poem and I have even seen poems written as  a response in which I am tagged in. Thank you for the thoughts and the words, but the suppositions are nowhere near the mark. This is one that cannot recover, cannot be brought back, cannot be made to have a better day. If  you pray, pray I forget that I once gain forget the memories that came to me that inspired this poem. Please do so.

Free Me To Death-A Haiku

Two words created to inspire creativity. For some it pulls out of them a positive and uplifting experience as they tap into either a fun and joyful memory or moment. For others it may be the complete opposite. That is the magic of words. You never know for certain what will be brought to the mind, even to the mind of the one creating the words. Or perhaps for some there is no surprise where this lost mind travels.

This week’s prompt words were again based on my thought from my Sunday post. Take the words the way you like. I even usually end up defining them differently when I do a Haiku myself.

One quick thing. I have noticed in my social network travels that we aren’t following each other on Twitter. I follow everyone I have  a Twitter Handle for. Every one, follow our Haiku friends.

My Example

I am free to love

As I wish and as I like,

I force through the pain.

Have you never ventured into our haiventure? “Hiaku, adventure? Haiventure? Yeah, I make up words. Just not for the purpose of the Haiku. Hmm, although that gives me an idea for next weeks Haiku Challenge. One thing I want to explain is about pingbacks.

A ping back is when you place the URL from the address bar of this page into the post you write your Haiku on. You also have to make certain the link is actually in there by clicking on the add link button which is next to the right alignment button. To me the add link button kind of looks like a paper clip. It’s the fifth from the right in the WordPress post editor. Read below for  a couple or few more things that will help.

Then simply put a link to your Haiku in the comments of this Post and I’ll go look, as will others. The link is the URL. You can also do a PingBack. That’s when you put the URL of this post in your post. Don’t know how to do a Pingback. Click here to find out how.

 

The Deadline is Sunday by Noon, EST, or New York Time to people like me that just have no clue about time zones.

Haiku is simple and simply addictive. So be warned now. Once you start it’s difficult to stop. Here are two things to know:

  1. Haiku can be broken into two sentences with the middle line of the three lines being the commonly used part, meaning 1&2 and 2&3 making sentences. That’s Haiku.
  2. Opposite meanings in the first and last sentences. That’s Haiku.

There are TWO “A RONOVAN’S CHOICE!” recipients each week. One for Humor and one for something more Serious. The Haiku are quite good each week and I am having to turn to the structure guidelines of a Haiku at times to help determine my selection.

Really each Haiku is a choice of mine, and I’m not just saying that, so I feel a bit odd even having something called A RONOVAN’S CHOICE, but hey, it’s a thing, right? And it does make it kind of fun.

Week 29 for the Weekly Haiku Prompt Challenge had the prompt word of Fret & Chill. So many definitions could have been used for these two words. Let’s find who participated and then you can find out what they did with them.

NEW THIS WEEK!

the aran artisanMelissa of The Aran Artisan – This might be extra long because she called me a debonair wordsmith. A lady of Maine her Irishman adores her. Thus, she moved it Ireland and the Aran Islands. Even with the Red Sox shirt on I saw the motherland in him and oddly I see it in her as well. So let’s see what she has to say for herself.

“My idealism is expressed in my tagline “Making a living by creating every aspect and ingredient of daily life.” These are the words of a friend who used them to describe my family.  Ya, it’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I like it anyway.

Me, my husband Johnny, and our five children make up our familyaran Ireland.  We have one dog, three cats, five ducks, twelve chickens, a hamster, a goldfish, and a dozen or so goats that share a nice life with us.

p.s. I wrote about how the move from America onto the Aran Islands came to be in my post I live in Aran.” Her Haiku this week is called, well I will be naming it. Let’s seem, hmm, Well Worn Heart. You have to see the image that inspired this Haiku and I think you will get why I chose the name. Now go give Melissa a warm welcome to the family! And for sure read her I live in Aran page. She needs to write a book based on this telling of how she got to Aran. And her writing style is wonderful.

Okay, so I haven’t read them. Simply wrote the names and saw the images so far. I’m concerned.  Okay. I’m good now. I have to say Mommy’s Reprieve made me actually chuckle. Yes, I chuckle at times. Marigold of Versus Blurb – Lethargic Heat. So when I first read this I saw Lethargic Heart. Oh, I feel so sorry for her. Boo Hoo. Okay, I don’t really. Hmm, actually I do, I’m allergic to the heat. Tolerance or Support, What do people really Want?

Tolerance. One of the most misunderstood words in language, or at least in the English language.

You can have a tolerance for pain. Your body can tolerate medications more than they once did and thus the medications become less effective. You can tolerate someone’s behavior.

I personally have less tolerance for things than I once did. Some reasons are medical reasons. There are other things that I finally decided that I was simply tired of tolerating and therefore no reason I must tolerate.

Or should I say, not tolerate in the way the world has come to define the word. Tolerance these days is  defined as acceptance and supporting.

Before anyone begins to jump on some high horse and think I am talking about certain social issues, get over yourself and put your assumptions back in your back pocket close to where it belongs.

I had a very long post written but I decided to make this as short as I can. First of all I have two polarizing examples that will make my point clear.

  • Example: The death penalty is a law in some states in the U.S. of A.. Does that mean I have to SUPPORT it or Tolerate it? I’ll keep using the death penalty here. If you believe it should be a law in my state and you live in my state as well and there is a vote coming up, do I have to SUPPORT it just because you want me to? And if it does become a law do I have to SUPPORT it or Tolerate it?
  • If you want to go another more controversial law you can consider abortion. It’s a law. Do you SUPPORT it or Tolerate it?

So what I want to talk about today is having to tolerate what other people say about Christianity, Jesus, and God. A great many in the public eye like to speak out against Christianity while praising or supporting other faiths or even no God at all. And if someone calls them on it then the person doing the calling is called a bigot or intolerant.

If you are of another faith or don’t believe in God, that’s your deal. It has nothing to do with me. I have friends here in the blogs that believe in other faiths or no God at all. We get along just fine. So before you start calling me a bigot as I continue, I’m about the least bigoted person you will find. I figure God gave us free will. I’m not the one to take that away from anyone.

I don’t SUPPORT what people say about Christianity. I take that back. I don’t support ALL of the generalizations and negativity aimed at Christianity. Some things said may be true, about some Christians. If a specific person is being discussed and the things mentioned are true then they are true.

But if I were to get on a news program and say that I don’t like what someone says about the negative generalities I can almost guarantee you that I would end up with hate messages in various places. Why? Because I am supposed to ACCEPT and SUPPORT  the hate at me but no one is supposed to TOLERATE or PUT UP WITH my defending my faith, my beliefs.

I can hear the thoughts of some now. “Ronovan, you can’t be serious. You Christians think you have it so bad. You rule the world. You have it so easy. You can get away with anything. You are in control of everything.” Let me read my Bible at lunch in a local school, alone, in my classroom, and see what happens.

I read blogs, opinions of people, and remain friends. I don’t always support what people say but I don’t have to. I can still be friends with someone and not support every single thing they support. And I don’t go out and yell and scream about not supporting something.

Is it Tolerance the world wants from Christians or is it SUPPORT they want? There is a difference. Let’s turn it around. I want you to SUPPORT what I believe. You know, Tolerating would be good but no, I am saying now as an example, I want you to SUPPORT what I believe about something and make it a law. Do you think you can do that? The answer is no. You can’t. You want to say yes. You may comment yes, but the honesty in you should say no.

A society says they kill the first born child if it is male. It is legal in that society. Do you SUPPORT that? You are now thinking, “Ronovan, that’s not even close to what we are talking about.” Actually by saying I can’t freely act like a Christian, that I can’t fulfill my faith as a Christian as the Bible says to do so, you are saying to put my faith to death.

I tell you Jesus is the Son of God, that he died on the Cross for our sins, was resurrected so we could be saved. That I believe what Jesus said in the Bible about his being the only way to the Father.  I’m done. You can take it or leave it.

For some reason there are people that don’t like that. They think it’s forcing something on them. They think it is some form of I don’t know what. But they just can’t handle it. It’s up to you to believe me or not. I’m not going to beg, or repeat it over and over to you. I’m moving on and going to Wendy’s for a burger and fries.  And yes they are fries, not chips. Chips are thicker and not like the thin strips like American fries.

If you had questions after I said that about Christianity I would answer them, but that would be to you. No megaphone shouting in your car from me. And I wouldn’t even say that up there about Jesus being the only way unless there was some reason that came up in a conversation.

All my faith says to do is share it with others. Not force it. Some try to do that and they are wrong. I will tell you that now. If you are a Christian and reading this then you need to look what Jesus said; If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet~Matthew 10:14. No mention of yell or cram it down someone’s throat until they run you out of town.

I’ll tolerate things. I’ll put up with things. But just as I  don’t intend to force you to support things that you may not believe, don’t try and force me to support things I don’t believe in and use tolerance as a front to do it. It won’t work with me.  Make a law out of something all you want, but it doesn’t mean it will be supported by people.

As I’ve written this I am sure there are various things that have come to peoples’ minds. What issues could Ronovan be thinking of. Don’t try to guess because you would be surprised at how wrong you might be.

I live in Aran

Go read this. A beautiful love story, a real life one, about how the newest Haiku Challenge member came to fall in love and end up in Aran, Ireland. A great story and great writing. I’ve read it twice already. And yes, that’s her home. Wow!

Ronovan Writes Weekend Mick Flick. Do you feel Serendipity this week?

I suppose you might want to know what a Mick Flick is. Well every man fears, actually dreads two words; Chick Flick. That’s right, we know what it means. Romance, tears and we are deemed as failures either because we are men or because we aren’t the men in that, dare I say it, RomCom.

Instead of Chick Flicks, men need an alternative. And this is something we men need to embrace and women, you should as well and you may find date nights become a whole new experience.

The alternative? Rooster Flicks? No. I don’t even like saying Chick Flicks so giving it some form of relevance by actually calling the alternative as Rooster doesn’t work for me. And with the various possible definitions one could give to Rooster based ones mindset and locale, I am just not going there. No, Male Chick Flick. That’s right, the Mick Flick.

What constitutes a Mick Flick?

  • It needs a touch of humor if it doesn’t have action.
  • It needs to tug the heartstrings in some way, with a message or something.
  • And yeah, an attractive female lead might work out, but it’s not completely necessary. Oh, you don’t believe me on this one? I shall prove you wrong, although attractiveness is in the eye of the beholder. For me it is the eye of the personality. Pretty lady, ugly personality equals scary run the other way. Yeah, NOT attractive.

Another Cromedy this week. Starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.

Imagine a girl writing her name and phone number inside a book and you writing yours on a $5 bill and then hoping you both end up finding the other at some point and reunite, leaving your future to ‘fate’. Sounds like a movie just waiting to aggravate the popcorn out of you to me, but it isn’t. There are humorous moments and yeah, aggravating moments but in truth the fate part isn’t what makes this a must watch for men.
It’s the search that is what I fell for in this film. Years pass by but they both keep an eye out for the bill and the book until it comes to a point of now or never. That’s where this movie wins me. Do you leave your love to fate or do you want to have a hand in what happens?

So the significant one in the relationship is saying, “Ronovan, last week you had My Big Fat Greek Wedding and that was okay. At least there was an old man squirting Windex on everything. But now you are going serious Rom with a little less Com. No way is this happening.” Step and let me get the BroJo going.

Men, why you need to watch this movie.

First up you got Kate Beckinsale. British accent had has made a living out of playing a hot vampire warrior in the Underworld movies. I mean the accent alone got me. Let me recover for a moment.

Okay, so not enough? Add in Eugene Levy as the opportunistic salesclerk who takes Cusack’s character, Jonathan Trager for everything he’s got and then there is Jonathan’s best friend, the writer. Yeah, writes of obituaries! And they all go chasing around to find an address.

So what is the message here? I guess it depends on your take on it. Do you see it as fate will bring you together, or the two are working it so it all happens, or do you get the message of if it feels right then don’t screw it up by doing some stupid carp stuff like writing your name in things to see if on let me see, FATE will make it work out.

Okay, okay, oaky. I’m good now. I’ll leave it to you to pick what you think the answer is and I would give you which one I think it is. Oh, and I didn’t tell you how it ended. Bet you will be surprised.

 

Now to the ranking of the movie:

I like a movie with good acting, no matter the type, see, type, not genre, type. Yes, I like a lot of commas. Even commas that aren’t supposed to be there.

Good acting Yes

Attractive Female Lead – YEAH! This week we have the looks, the accent, and the personality. Sigh. Did I mention her eyes and her accent? No? Okay. She has eyes and an accent.

Insane Characters – Yes. Eugene Levy, I mean do I have to say more. Okay, so there is also John Corbett again this week. He plays Lars, Kate Beckinsale’s famous freaky musical instrument playing finace.

Humor – Eugene Levy really is the humor in the film. Molly Shannon plays Beckinsale’s character, Sara Thomas’ best friend and there is some fun there as well. But Levy nails it.

Bodily Harm No. Not really any.

Food Humor –  No. Don’t think this one has the food humor from what I can remember.

ActionNo.

Good Message Yes. This week is a for sure yes. For one you can take whatever message you want from it.

Tear Moment No major tear moments here. Maybe just one but not like major..

Male Lead is Not Made Out to Be Stupid: – I’m torn here. He let Beckinsale’s character walk out on a $5 bet. I mean, really, dude, that’s stupid to me. But overall he’s not. He’s a pretty smart guy. I guess he is. Then again he get’s taken to the cleaners by a salesclerk. Hmm. Wow. Still in limbo on this one.

Cuddle Taco Bonus – OH YEAH!!! CTB BABY!

So on the Taco Scale of 10 Tacos being awesome  and 1 being like tacos without the meat, cheese or sauce,today’s Mick Flick receives:

 6 out of 10 Tacos. With CTB that make it a 7 Taco Meal, not a Feast but you won’t go hungry.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite movies. And when I originally gave it a personal score I gave it a 9. But I had to stick to the Mick Ticks, and there you have it.

That’s my Cromedy Recommendation for this weekend. What movie can you think of that meets the Mick Flick requirements? I already have future movies in a list so don’t be surprised if you end up seeing your idea in a future post.

Depression, Understanding, and Finding Peace.

Year of Renewal. That’s what my theme for this year is. In reality that’s a theme for every day. For someone who has days that are very routine oriented, who needs days that are very routine oriented I surprisingly find myself starting over a lot.

Just when you think things in your life are possibly, just possibly on the right track—Boom! But that’s okay. If you look at my life, I’m kind of accustomed to things never being quite where I need them to be or like them to be or maybe it’s just that life is not where I expect it to be.

Talking About Depression.

First off, I am going to say that everyone is different. No two people have the exact same things about their depression. They may be similar enough to be helped but they are all unique. Also, how they are helped will vary. What I discuss here today is about me and what I know and have discovered through my adventure through this thing we call life.

Depression is something a lot of people think they understand. A lot of people are wrong. For me, a conk on the head, the loss of all my memories, and a ton of pain without ceasing plays havoc with my abilities to cope at times. Don’t get me wrong, I do fairly well. Sure, I talk about depression and life situations at times, actually not near as much as I once did, but I do so to share with others so they can see there is a bright spot, a way through, an ability to overcome. I do so in order that people who don’t understand can understand about someone in their life that may suffer from depression. And by the way, I can’t stand the word cope, but it might pop up at times today.

Tell Your People It Happens.

For those of you who do suffer from depression know that life is not over. That’s something to tell those who support you and give you sympathy to the point of enabling you to be depressed even more often. That makes it sound as though depression is something one can turn on and off like a garbage disposal. No, but once you are in a bout of depression what is your motivation to come out of it if those around you are doing nothing but giving you pity?

That being said, you do need time to handle it. And no one, no matter what, can force someone out of a true bout of depression. I am not speaking of sadness, I am speaking of depression.

Being Mr. Positive about my life is a pain in the backside at times. Don’t get me wrong, I am fine. I really am Mr. Positive. I’m not dead. I could be and probably should be. But I’m here rambling away. But let me tell you one thing about depression.

It Sucks.

For those of you who experience depression I’m here to say I know how much it sucks. There is a line you are trying to not be sucked over but the quicksand of that part of your mind just keeps pulling you in. We all get jerked over that line. And let me tell you folks who haven’t experienced depression, I’m not talking about grief and sadness, you do get jerked over that line. One moment you are fine and the next it’s literally like a switch has been flipped. One moment one side of the line, next moment the other side of the line, yes, sucked over. Sucks. I used that word for a reason after all.

When I enter the suck zone I am fortunate that I can come here and write about it in some form. Normally it’s a poem. I don’t feel poetic today. In fact my long form poetry may be on hiatus for a while. I’ve been struggling lately. As an example there are times when I open a page to type and the tears begin. It may even be my opening email to write someone and the tears begin. It doesn’t matter what I am writing, they begin. But how do I keep going? I want to go into me for a bit more  here and I will tell you later on how I keep going. But now a bit about the for real me.Because me is the best example and the most thorough example I can give.

  • Retrograde amnesia – Meaning I don’t remember people or events prior to my fall other than my son.
  • Short Term Memory problems – There are times I won’t remember from one hour to the next something. There are even times I won’t remember something from 5 minutes ago.
  • Fibromyalgia – which consists of things such as Chronic Pain and Chronic Fatigue.
  • Osteoarthritis – of the entire spine with a narrowing of the spine at the base.
  • Migraines that do not stop but only vary in intensity.
  • Light sensitivity.
  • Sound sensitivity.
  • Problems with crowds.
  • Not allowed to drive.
  • Recently fell again and hit my head again.
  • Cannot do math to save my life.
  • Crippling hand pain where I end up using pencils to type with, or my knuckles or try to use voice to text programs.
  • No off switch to the brain. Most of the time I can’t stop thinking and just have to fall asleep from exhaustion.
  • Herniated discs in neck and other parts of spine.
  • Slowly becoming a recluse without actively trying.

For those out there who are professional therapists or whatever, I am not using these things as identifiers but simply as contributors to something I am talking about. I identify myself as positive, constructive, and creative things. So don’t fret and chill a bit.

That’s a list of some of the problems I have. There are other things related to them I have and also those caused by the medications I must take but I don’t want to take up the whole article with all of that. One thing happening right now is as I type these words it feels as though with each keystroke I am jamming my fingers into nails and needles. But my escape from all of my troubles is writing.

It Isn’t Pretend.

Looking at that list, do you think my bouts of depression are simply moments I want to just wallow in self-pity? Or do you perhaps see things that can overwhelm someone to the point of breaking for a short time until recovery takes place? I admit if you are having a bad time in life sometimes you do want to just wallow in that downer time, acknowledge, and own it and then move on, but that’s something completely different.

Look at an athlete. Let’s say you have someone participate in the Iron Man Triathlon. Following that event, after pretty much every muscle group has been used and spent, they need a time to recover. No one questions that. Well, the brain can be exhausted as well by various stimuli that force it to work overtime and then it needs to shut down and recover. So think of depression as the after effects of a mental marathon and the time it takes to come out of a bout of it is that cool down, rub down, and however much rest needed to recover from it.

Another aspect similar to the Triathlete is exhaustion. Depression is so mentally draining you feel like you can barely move. I compare it to having the flu. You do not want to move. For me it intensifies the physical pains because I am not able to put my mind on other things. I focus on me  and notice what is wrong with me more. Normally I do everything possible to ignore the pain.

The True Silent Killer.

In addition to the list above depression is also part of everything. It goes along with the memory loss and the Fibromyalgia. Oddly, Fibromyalgia is not a life threatening illness. The depression part of it is. Just call the life threatening aspect a side effect.

Although the brain takes over and will shut everyone and everything out, at some point I’ve learned to handle things for the most part and take preventative measures. I partly do this by closing myself off from negative stimuli as much as possible. Those negative stimuli primarily relate to the media. I am also fortunate, in a way, that I  spend my days in a little room typing away at writing novels, articles, and interviews a good portion of my waking hours and can just crash whenever the pain is too much or the Chronic Fatigue hits.  This also helps with some of my physical ailments and allows me to be able to function at least somewhat normally, or at least appear to do so for my son.

Understanding.

Something people don’t understand about the seclusion part during a bout of depression is, it isn’t intentional or something I am even aware of until afterwards. My mind takes over to heal itself.

But then I get slammed by something. In those moments I shutdown and I don’t just mean my laptop. My brain shuts down until it can handle it. With the responsibilities here in Blog World I am not able to shut down as much as I need to but then again work is work. Responsibilities are responsibilities and when you agree to do something then you do it.

Amnesia is an unusual part of the package in my life. Throw in the short term memory problems as well. There are things I don’t remember at all from before my accident. Let’s be completely honest, as far as people, you could probably number them on one maybe two hands. That’s out of decades of my life. I’ve  learned to mange that at times, but it does overwhelm as well. No matter where I am a wave of not knowing will sometimes hit me.

Now to the short term memory problems. Here in my home it is not as much an issue because people simply work with it or around it. Well, most of the time. Thus the need for routine. For breakfast I have about two options I make. Two for lunch and for dinner I eat what I am given or if not given anything I revert to one of my lunch options. I was never one for enjoying the same thing over and over, or so I am told, but now I eat the same thing. There have been days where I had the same thing for each meal and didn’t know it. It’s one way to save on the grocery bill.

But how does short term memory problems contribute to my depression? First of all, I don’t remember things from a short time ago, even during the same day. But the biggest problem and really it is part of the first problem is people. I am accused so often of neglect by people. Why do you not talk to me? Why do you ignore me? Why did you stop being my friend? Why are you a jerk? Why have you made my life so upsetting?

Now, as time goes by I develop ways of dealing with these messages. I file them in the T folder. Yes, that may sound harsh but the truth of the matter is if a person does not know me well enough or cares enough about me to understand my situation well enough to, and I hate to say this, just go with it, then there isn’t anything I can do about it. If I remember I remember if I don’t I don’t.  And one sure fire way to guarantee me not remembering is to send a message including phrases like those in the previous paragraph. You may tell me you were the most important person ever to me. I don’t know my mother or my father. The only member of my family I know is my son. Step back and reflect on that for a moment. Put that into perspective.

But those that persist trigger the depression, they tip my brain over that line into the suck zone. The exhaustion zone. The I ain’t here no more zone.

And the saddest part of it all is it’s not about me. It’s about them. They will never recognize nor acknowledge they have anything to do with it. Nor will they simply accept whatever the new way things are and go with it and leave the petty remarks in their pocket.

For some people they deal with a combination of everything I go through and then go to work each day. Imagine having depression and not being able to tell your boss. It’s not something you can control, and it may not even interfere with your work but guess what happens when you tell your employer. A great deal of the time you end up with a  label, a stigma, a pink slip, a demotion, a new job at home without a paycheck but done so in a manner as of it being downsizing or they suddenly find all these things that have never been wrong with your job performance before. So guess what? Handling depression gets even more difficult. Yes, it’s difficult for me for certain reasons and it’s difficult for others for other reasons.

Do you want to know what the biggest problem with depression is? People. People not treating you as a person and just letting you do what you need to do to work through it. I have people who think talking a lot will help me. Okay, so I am depressed, my brain has shut down. It simply wants to rest and you then want to get in my safety zone and turn on the fake happy and talk like a crazy clown?

I’ll end that part of things there.

So what do I do?

What do I do beyond medications and preventative shutting out of the negative parts of the world? I turn to God. I have medications for pain, migraines, and I think one that does a double duty job on something plus is also a depression thing. It’s not specifically for depression but one of the alternate uses is for it. But all of those things together don’t work. Pain is still there and life goes on. The one thing that can bring me peace of mind and put me on an even keel is the Word of God.

One of my favorite verses, one I have shared before is “He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”~Psalm 46:10

You see there isn’t really a specific verse that says “If you are depressed do this.” Instead the Bible tells us what to do as an everyday practice.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”~Philippians 4:4-7

And I know there are other verses about praying without ceasing and the like.

That’s tough. Let’s not sugar coat it. Let’s not make it sound easy. When you are being torn apart in the middle of a bout of depression it is difficult to find the energy to even say a prayer. I won’t lie to you about that. But you don’t have to. You see, I know my Bible. Oddly that is something I didn’t forget. I don’t HAVE to necessarily say a prayer or even praise God in the way you are thinking to be pulled out of depression or be made at least at ease enough to ride through it. Knowing God is there is enough. Since I believe in Him so strongly, just the thought of Him is enough.

A Year of Renewal. Plans don’t always work out the way you think. I think having that word Renewal is appropriate. This isn’t a tips article. It’s what I do to survive. It’s what I do to find peace. And with that in mind, this will be my last article on this subject or these problems. If you ever find yourself with questions, refer to this article, I’ll even put a link to it on my About page.

Bruised Heart-A Haiku

My plan for the week was, let me actually rephrase that, I wasn’t going to write a Haiku this week. In fact there was no plan for poetry at all in my foreseeable future. It’s not that I have given it up or don’t like poetry, it’s just something I am not feeling right now. I’m not a poetry mill. I’ve been there and done that.

Writing poetry, at least for me is about tapping into an honest place and sharing honest things that can be tender places in the heart that shouldn’t be touched. Even when I write a funny poem it doesn’t begin that way. It begins serious and turns humorous out of defense. Defending the tender places.

Some reading this are likely about to hurl. They don’t see how poetry is that big of a deal or how it can really be any more than a few words to rhyme about puppies, clouds and rainbows. True, some poetry is about those things, for that writer. Perhaps those things have meanings for them. I don’t know where the inspiration came from so I can’t say good or bad.

However, even though poetry was not in the heart for me this week, which is a requirement, even though I didn’t want to go there a friend expressed a hope I would write something for the challenge I host each week. How could I not write something when so many faithfully participate each week?

Today is a day like no other days that have ever been called days before this day ever became a day. On this day I decided to base today’s prompt words on Sunday’s Sunday Thought for the day. Won’t you be glad when I stop talking about days? That being said, remember that you use the definition of a word as you see fit.

One quick thing. I have noticed in my social network travels that we aren’t following each other on Twitter. I follow everyone I have  a Twitter Handle for. Every one, follow our Haiku friends.

 Fret & Chill

My Example

Don’t fret about it,

Because I fall every day,

Chill, it’s just a thing.

Have you never ventured into our haiventure? “Hiaku, adventure? Haiventure? Yeah, I make up words. Just not for the purpose of the Haiku. Hmm, although that gives me an idea for next weeks Haiku Challenge. One thing I want to explain is about pingbacks for some.

A ping back is when you place the URL from the address bar of this page into the post you write your Haiku on. You also have to make certain the link is actually in there by clicking on the add link button which is next to the right alignment button. To me the add link button kind of looks like a paper clip. It’s the fifth from the right in the WordPress post editor.

Another explanation from last week with a link , a pingback if you will to an article I wrote a while back about how to do a Pingback.

Then simply put a link to your Haiku in the comments of this Post and I’ll go look, as will others. The link is the URL. You can also do a PingBack. That’s when you put the URL of this post in your post. Don’t know how to do a Pingback. Click here to find out how.

 

The Deadline is Sunday by Noon, EST, or New York Time to people like me that just have no clue about time zones.

Haiku is simple and simply addictive. So be warned now. Once you start it’s difficult to stop. Here are two things to know:

  1. Haiku can be broken into two sentences with the middle line of the three lines being the commonly used part, meaning 1&2 and 2&3 making sentences. That’s Haiku.
  2. Opposite meanings in the first and last sentences. That’s Haiku.

For a full refresher or How to write Haiku in English click here. But you can use whatever Haiku style you want to. As long as you, do a Haiku.

Blogging Personality: The Key to Success.

blogging-personalityThere is something that I believe has been overlooked in the Blogger Community. The Blogger Personality. What key role does Personality play in the success of a blog? We’ll get to that shortly.

I want to mention a few Blogs I see as Successful. Before I do, do not confuse large numbers of Followers with success. Once you do that you head down a path that leads to a never to be satisfying Blog World experience.

Why?

  • People Follow you Hoping you will Follow them.
  • People stop reading your work and just don’t stop Following you.
  • People aren’t really part of your Blog World except for a number.
  • If numbers and not activity are your idea of success, then be prepared for some anxiety.

Let’s then define Blog Success. I see Blog Success as a Blog that;

  • Keeps its Readers coming back for more.
  • Keeps its Readers entertained.
  • Keeps its Readers engaged.

Notice the the three common words, ‘Keeps Its Reader’.

You may have 10,000 Followers but only 50 actually show up or even engage in your Blog. 50 is a good number to have show up daily, but if you look at the percentage of the Followers, something isn’t being Successful.

SuzieThe Matter-of-Fact personality: Suzie of Suzie81Speaks has this personality in her Blog. She combines it with just enough humor to make it all work together. Suzie was one of my earliest friends in Blog World. She may very well be the longest surviving one. Having been one of my first interviews ever I learned that what you see is what she is. 

The Humble-and-Helpful personality: Chris Graham the Story chris_the_story_reading_ape.jpgReading Ape. One click to his Blog and you know there is not a single thing about his blog that is about him. The Blog is devoted to helping others with their careers. Having interviewed Chris I can tell you the Blog Personality you see is the Life Personality he is.

Jo Robinson (2)The Devoted-to-Their-Craft personality: Jo Robinson of Africolonial Stories/Jo Robinson, or at least that’s how I am spelling it today, is an Author who does something many Authors might not do. She shares her space with other Author Bloggers. When you go to her Blog you may not see a personally written piece from her for several Posts. That’s Jo. Yes, I’ve interviewed Jo and worked with Jo and that’s Jo.

The Caring-for-Their-Friends-and-Fun-Loving personality:  Anyone Hugh Loadedhaving visited and or had interactions with Hugh Roberts of Hugh’s Views & News knows he is the epitome of this personality. Hugh has been interviewed by me and works with me as well. He’s for real.

I used examples of people I know personally to show you the genuine personalities it takes to have success. People can take on a personality for a Blog but eventually it breaks down. You will see the cracks form and you will leave that blog.

There are many other personalities and names I could have mentioned. No one was excluded to be slighted. Perhaps I will do further Blog Personalities in the future.

Each personality is different and neither of the four could do a Blog like the other. Chris and Jo are similar in their author support but then selection of Posts and writing of Posts are different. The backbone of purpose is different. You would need to read of them in order to understand.

For every Extroverted personality there are at least 100 Introverted ones. Often times those Introverts overcome their shyness in order to Reply to Comments or more often click Like on a Post of a friend.

For the Introverted Blogger the mere process of Blogging itself is a huge accomplishment. Sharing held in thoughts and creations with the world is something very therapeutic and very scary at the same time. Exposing rawness with the world with the possibility of harsh or cruel feedback is a chest tightening moment as the Introvert clicks Publish.

I appear to be an Extrovert in many ways but really I’m an Introvert in the biggest possible way you can imagine. But why should that have anything to do with how a Blog, my Blog operates? Or how should it influence what my Blog is?

I’ve written a great deal about how interaction with Readers is essential to Blog success. Well, I am not a big interactions person. I was at one point but in truth it was something I seriously had to push myself to do. That is one reason I don’t expect every Blogger to be the same.

Let’s look at Commenting and Replying. This is a huge area of possible disconnect and either a win or lose with a reader. If you reply to a comment and make it personal then there is a connection, maybe. If you don’t reply then you may not have that reader return. Some people almost insist on a reply to their comment.

Unfortunately I personally am not that great at replying these days. Does that make me a bad blogger or mean I am unappreciative? Does that make you that way?

For some that would be a yes. Various Bloggers have an opinion on the matter and are willing to share it, quite loudly. “If you don’t reply or comment then you suck as a blogger and don’t deserve Followers.”

In that case, “Hello, my name is Suck, you may unFollow me now.”

However, I believe my Reader Friends know me. My personality comes through in the Content, the Writing on my Blog. Part of that personality is one that deals with very deep emotional feelings. I share that in all its rawness in my poetry and even in commentary of letters I write.

Those who appreciate what I have done know how much that takes out of a person. They aren’t just words put out there. There are poems I have written where I agonize through every word and am a wreck for days following.

I would like to Reply to Comments on poems like that but sometimes I am not sure how and am not mentally able to. A ‘Thank you’ is sometimes all I manage, but I am not certain if that is enough considering what some people write. I click Like on their Comment to at least show I have read and appreciate what they have said.

For me when I see someone’s heart and soul laid bare for all to see, I appreciate it. I understand what they have done. I don’t do it myself in order to have people Comment. I want them to enjoy it,yes, take something from it, yes, but I am not demanding a Comment. Nor do I expect a demand of a Reply. My wish is for them to return another time and see what else I have to share with them.

What makes a Blog a success is what a Blogger puts into their Blog. You can use all the technical aspects to bring more people TO your Blog but it’s YOUR PERSONALITY through your words in what you write that keeps them coming back.

Weekly Haiku Poetry Prompt Challenge Rewind 28

The end of Week 28 of of the Weekly Haiku Poetry Prompt Challenge and I made it an interesting one this week. The words Pop and Fail were chosen initially based on a thought about Pop Culture and the failure of society in so many areas. But even I went crazy with the words once they were in black on that white screen.

Thank you to those who complimented the new challenge badge. I personally like how the background took on a foil like appearance.

Meredith and Martha of Meredith’s Musings: We have Four this week as usual; Discipline and Splendor and then Grandpa and Surprise. Very telling Haiku this week from our Lit Queens. Surprise so makes sense to me and is a duh moment for whoever created those things. Grandpa I believe tells the story of a lot of Grandpa characteristics. A lot in so few lines. Just goes to show you how much you can do with so few words. @Meredithlbl

Faith Unlocked: POP. There are times when I believe some of us have too much time on our hands. And as Faith Unlocked happens to do quite often, we have a second Haiku. Syllable Required. I found the syllable. @FaithUnlocked

Elizabeth of Tea & Paper: Kale. Cruel. Wrong. Evil. Yeah, that’s pretty much it. Ever thought you would hear those words in the same paragraph with Elizabeth’s name AND she be the cause of them? @TeandPaper

Cyril of Cyril Bussiere: Cyril said this would be a lighthearted one this week. I haven’t clicked it yet. So let’s go find out. Okay, I think he meant lightheaded one. I could be wrong, but I think lightheaded works. So I’m going to call it the Lightheaded Lighthearted Haiku. Have you checked out any of Cyril’s books at Amazon yet? No? Then click here to do so. Nato of Chasing Life and Finding Dreams freaked me out with her new Header Photo on her blog. I mean it is totally cool because  you get a couple of ideas at first. But yeah, freaked me out not expecting it. Of course she will say it’s been there this entire time. I will then use my amnesia as an excuse. ACE IN THE HOLE! Oh yeah, her Haiku. Lost Words, kind of like what I did there. I kind of lost my way with the words. Oh how these people try to appeal to the writer in me with their Haiku aimed at my failure! I say to thee nay! Nay! NAY! That’s what the McCartney/Jackson song sounds like if they both had a cold when they recorded it. Nay Nay Nay. @MichelleLunato

Kimberly of K.S. Fause: Colors. First of all before I go any further, I want to give credit to Kimberly for really bringing the image aspect to this challenge. Yes, images were being used but once she came along it became a whole new game. She made the rest of us really work on our skills. Now for her Haiku? Last week I asked about the image and the history of it. This week, she gave us the history of what she used and the inspiration for her Haiku. Kimberly has kicked it up again. She just made this Challenge more interesting. @KSFause

It is that Kimberly stepped up the game a bit with her offering this week and the meaning of it all. I think when you go and look at what she did you will agree. Much Admiration to her for his one.

There was one that had a social commentary reference that I am drawn to and then another that was more subtle in the humor which is a difficult thing to accomplish. Since I no longer want to take the easy way out and have ties this week’s Humor Haiku is Kale by Elizabeth of Tea & Paper.

 

 

My Haiku offerings this week were Pop Fail and Night Fails Me Again. When you write something you do so with a meaning. However, as I have said several time before a Haiku can have several meanings. Little did I know so would mine.

My Sunday Thought: Why Worry?

I wrote a long post for today about Depression. I even listed all of my medical problems to help people understand reasons why things can get the way they do for me at times. I created an image for it. Put about 15 links to other sites in it and scheduled it.

It’s in the Trash folder now.

Yes, it would have been useful for some. People need to know that other people go through the same things and come out the other side just fine. Look at me, right? Mr. Positive. I have been called that more times than I can count on one finger. Okay, so yeah, I’ve been called that a lot.

But you know what? Why not be Positive? Life can throw you a big old load of Suck sometimes. Wallow in it for a while and then jump out and move on. Yeah, I said wallow in it. Acknowledge that it is there. Don’t deny it to yourself. Sure, deny it to everyone else. But admit it to yourself. I have a saying about when I am in a bout of depression, “As long as I know I am depressed then I’m okay, it’s when I don’t know that I am depressed that people should start to worry.”

How do I stay positive through all the crap life throws my way?

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”~Philippians 4:4-7

Yeah, it doesn’t say there is an exception to the rule, does it? Nope. You’ve heard ‘Give it to God’ before. Well there you go and there it is. But take all of his passage in. “And the peace of God . . . will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” But you need to remember that. Don’t just read it, but remember it and live it.

I hope each of you have a great week ahead of you. No matter what comes your way think of these verses. For some of you out there you are probably thinking, “But, Ronovan, I don’t believe in God.” Well, let me ask you this, what good does it do for you to be anxious about things all the time, to worry all the time?

I may post the other Sunday Thought another day, but for today, be positive.

Character is Huge.

Football isn’t something I talk about much. I do have something to say about it in light of the current New England Patriots deflated balls controversy and quarterback Tom Brady. I’m not going to discuss the blames for and the who cares about it anyway of the whole thing. I’m not going to discuss the stats from the first half compared to the second half. That’s all for the uber fans to talk about. And in truth that’s not what people come here to check out.

What it did was remind me of something. Part of a chapter from a Romance I wrote. Yes, I wrote a Romance novel.

Bear with, there is a point to it.



 

Jennie fell back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. “All these years you have all known and no one said anything and now you all know how I feel and–mother fix it.”

Laura laughed as she laid down next to her daughter. “I can’t. This one is all yours, dear.”

“If Gary would just have kept being a jerk it would have been easy,” Jennie said.

Laura sat up and hugged her knees with her cheek against them, looking down at her daughter. “Tonight ask your father about Peyton Manning and how he was drafted.”

“What?” Jennie asked. She sat up propping back on the palms of her hands.

“While you’re eating, ask him. We saved dessert so we could eat with you while you had your hotdogs. Trust me. Ask him, it might help.”

Chapter ##

Jennie had been able to get herself together enough to eat, thanks to her mother. Everyone else already knew about the love Corbin had for her and were handling things as usual. She went along with the conversations as they ate dessert, waiting for the right moment to ask her father the question.

Things turned to spring training at the university, which led to old games, and rivalries and then she jumped in. “Dad, Mother said you had a story about Peyton Manning and how he was drafted,” she said.

 

Mitch McElroy looked at his wife. The years of marriage telepathy passed between them and Jennie knew he could tell there was more to this than her wanting to know a football story. He laced his fingers together in his story mode and began. “First I have to say my least favorite color is orange,” he said, and everyone laughed. The locals’ rivalries all had orange in their uniforms.

“But Peyton was a class act and still is. The team with the number one pick in the NFL draft needed a quarterback and it came down to two men. With their having the first pick before any other pro team this was a big decision. Both men had great numbers and in fact the other guy had slightly better numbers than Peyton, but they picked Peyton and ended up with a Super Bowl ring.”

“Why didn’t they pick the other guy?” Jennie asked.

 

“Character,” her father said. “Both did well on the field but in the pros, the guys in the office were making an investment in a future and they wanted to make sure of a good return on that investment. So what it came down to was how the two were away from the field.”

He took a drink of coffee and kept thinking for a moment. Jennie had always noticed he had coffee or milk with dessert. He said iced tea didn’t work because the sweet of desserts killed the sweet of the tea. “They didn’t want the drama of the press and personal life. They wanted a solid go to guy that they could count on, who was the same all the time everywhere. That was Peyton.”

 

“And the other guy?”

 

“Out of football now, never had success and has pretty much hit rock bottom, although he was drafted.”

 

Jennie looked at her plate. She was a mustard girl for her hotdogs at home. She picked up a fry and scooped up a stray bit of mustard.   Her Dad’s voice made her even more comfortable and she found herself slowly returning to a normal calm, or maybe what was turning into her new normal, whatever that was going to be.

“If I had an opening right now at work,” her father began. “I would take a good long look at the person’s history and even at their friends. You can tell a lot about a person about who they pick as friends, how close they are to family. Even by what books they read,” he said, putting his hand over hers.

Jennie looked at his eyes. This was the first time he had actually given her an open clue to his feelings. She smiled back at him and then her eyes widened. “I almost forgot,” she said jumping up.

“What in the world?” Her father asked.

 

Jennie returned in seconds and glared at Benny. “Dad, this is for you,” she said sweetly as she sat the chocolate pie down in front of him.

 

Glee spread across his face and his shoulders shrugged up in little boy delight as he rubbed his hands together. “You do love me,” he said as he took a big bite. The whipped cream covered his lips.

 

 

“And this,” she said. “Belongs to you, dear brother.” And the empty second pie tin, with what was left of chocolate was placed satisfyingly down upon her brother’s head. “Thanks, Sis,” he said and burped. “You do love me.”

Everyone laughed including Jennie.



Character goes a long way in every aspect of life. For Jennie she had a decision to make. Her father was giving her some advice she needed to take. As for what this has to do with the New England Patriots? Well years ago they were busted in a scandal where the head coach was caught having the opposing teams’ defensive signals videoed so he would know what they were calling during the game and thus know what offensive play to call. His character took a big hit. If not for that this whole thing now would not be such a big deal.

Now the Patriots are often called the most hated team in the league. Opposing teams will look for things to point out against them. Every quarterback likes the football to feel a certain way to be comfortable to his hand. Every quarterback. But here we have a man who is arguably one of the best quarterbacks ever to play the game being questioned on his Character.

Because of this what could possibly happen is brand new footballs are opened on the side line and the quarterbacks are forced to use wax covered, slippery tools that will affect everyone and now the people who are cheering for the demise and questioning of Tom Brady will be hit with the results of it. Because your own Character of being a malicious and sad individual it is possible it will come back to bite you in your own quarterback being made to suffer in the football he has to use.

The results of the before and after halftime, when the balls were switched to ‘good’ balls will tell you how the game would have turned out. The teams in the Championship Game would be the same. Good Character everyone.

Character is huge.
