Today is a good day to be  blogger. Why? Because I’m using my brand new laptop.

Okay, so it’s a pretty good day. This whole Microsoft whatever I am using and Windows 10 has me all messed up but I’m working on it. It took me forever to move an image on my screen with this trackpad without the buttons of my old Toshiba. Well, that is until I remembered I had a touch screen laptop. (And I just figured out how to highlight all the stuff on my screen so I came back and added this.)

Yes, the laptop has arrived. All shiny and new and thanks to all of you who helped out. Money was raised through a fund started by Florence of Meanings and Musings and through a couple of bloggers extra was added to help get something that would work well for me, last a while, and help me with some of my health problems in the use of the machine. Seriously, that touch screen is a blessing. I want to remind everyone that none of this was my idea. Even the computer picked out was not my idea. But people have my best interest at heart and know what I need. And I trust those who do.

I want to thank all of you who donated and/or spread the word that led to those donations. I’m not going to mention any names because future folks in need will end up knocking on the door of those poor soft-hearted souls when perhaps my need came along at the right time when they were able to help.

With the amount I was given I came in $2.74 under that total with a laptop, a new headset to use for recording vlogs that I have wanted to do, and had it shipped quickly so I could get back here in full force as soon as possible. Don’t worry, the headset was not an expensive one.

That amount was beyond anything I ever imagined. You foolish, kind-hearted people. I don’t know what to say other than thank you. Those words aren’t enough for what you’ve done. Other events of late would have made it impossible for me to  have acquired anything on my own and the doing the short snippets of blogs with a tablet and relying on old posts I had in my draft folder was difficult. Big guy…itty bitty working space. I wear at least a size 14-15 ring if that tells you about my fingers and a tablet screen.

Many people don’t trust people online. They don’t believe them, they don’t understand how people that have never spoken to one another and in some cases never even seen a picture of each other can be friends and do more than their own at home friends and family would.

Be yourself.

Be honest.

Be kind.

Help others without expectations.

Crazy Little Thing Called Love. #TunefulTuesday

It’s been some time since I did a Tuneful Tuesday but here we are…it’s Tuesday and I’m in a tuneful mood.

It’s a Saturday night in 1979-1980 and I’m on the roller rink rollering away, possibly trying not to break my arm or neck as I hang on to the rail . . . teaching myself to skate. A foolish endeavor when looking back on the fact that one of the prettiest teenage girls ever, my baby-sitter or whatever, was an expert skater and wanted to show me how. Oh how boys can be dumb at a certain age.

Then the scary thing happens. The somewhat empty floor is swarmed. Why? Because the first #1 hit in the land for a British Hall of Fame act is announced as being next.

It’s crazy. Yes, it’s even just a little thing. But I have no idea what it had to do with love.

Freddie Mercury and Queen with Crazy Little Thing Called Love begins and the drum beats of Roger Taylor that are possibly forgotten in their influence through the years due to a once in a life time voice and performer in Mercury drives everyone around the rink.

The meaning of the lyrics? They are what they are and the song is a tribute to Elvis Presley. One of those rare songs from a legendary performer that was what it was. That’s cool if you think about it.

From Melody Maker interview  05/o2/81:

Let’s talk about your song writing. Can you write songs to order: “At two o’clock today I will start working on song . . . ?”

I have no set rules for writing, but yes, I can write like that, I really can. It’s haphazard and it’s become a bit of a joke to me, but if I knew we’re going into the studio I just get my thinking process going. I can write songs to order, like a job. Some songs come faster that others: “Bohemian Rhapsody” I had to work at like crazy. I just wanted that kind of song. “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” took me five or ten minutes. I did that on the guitar, which I can’t play for nuts, and in one way it was quite a good thing because I was restricted, knowing only a few chords. It’s a good discipline because I simply had to write within a small framework. I couldn’t work through too many chords and because of that restriction I wrote a good song, I think.

The dream of a writer; the reality of an author.

I believe every person passes through numerous dreams and down many roads on the way to what they will finally become. For some of us we find the roadblocks, the forks in the road, the detours, and at times a dead end. I’ll be using several quotes from famous individuals today, as I am prone to do , however I also enjoy using quotes of my own.

I have taken many forks in the road in my life on the road to becoming an author. I’ve even sat stalled on the side of that road, but I always find my way back. Those moments of “adventure” add to the experiences my characters are able to struggle through or joy through.

Not having a good memory after the concussion, I’m not certain if I ever wanted to rule the world of writing. These days I like the sense of accomplishment when completing a novel and submitting it. Even those form rejections are okay these days. Rejections means I tried. Lots of rejections means I tried a lot.

Having that memory problem and other health problems means it takes me a bit of time to complete things. I’ve had to re-read chapters to know what I was writing to begin with…short  term memory problems can be a bear for a writer. But just as time takes care of many things, makes many things better, and adds flavor, it also adds to what you can put into a project you are working on.

When I wrote my romance, as a challenge to myself to write outside my comfort zone shortly after my accident, I didn’t know what I would do with it. I fussed over it for a time. Then recently with the downfall of my laptop I returned to reading that romance after some encouragement.

Not halfway through, I discovered I was an author. I read on the kindle screen a book. Not only a book, but a very good book. I was smiling and feeling along with the characters.

I am now working on that book and will not stop until it is in a state of submission, either through the mail or by headlock.

Time. There is nothing that can be successful without time. Even a race is won after hours and years of practice.

Last night before falling asleep, I felt a Haiku welling up inside. My tablet was in my hands. I wrote down the verse, and with some minor edits the Haiku appeared: “History Repeats.” It is the PING presently above. It seems my reaction to Ronovan’s words Rise and Save had an extremely visceral reaction within me. Finding Time to Blog. Huh?

I’ve been asked in the past about how to find time to blog. Do you have time to ask me that question? If the answer is yes, you have the time to blog. Do you have time to read a blog? If the answer is yes, you have time to write a blog. I don’t think people are really asking me about time. Then what are they asking me about?

“How do I come up with ideas?

“What do people will like to read?”

“Ronovan, WHAT DO I WRITE ABOUT?!”

I have no idea what you should write about. Why? Because I’m not you. But I suppose like any other blogging non-expert I can tell you what I have done.

The truth is when you first begin to blog you might end up writing about a lot of different things until you find what you are most comfortable with. I was heavy into some dark poetry. It was basically a time I was dealing with my amnesia and before being diagnosed and treated for various health issues. But a great many people identified with it. I have no idea why nor did I attempt to keep writing it in order to keep a certain audience.

I can’t write poetry quite like that now because I am in a much better place. I obviously didn’t give up blogging or writing poetry. Now I write whatever comes to me, regardless of subject or audience. It’s my blog. Thus I blog what I blog.

The first thing you need to decide, once you get down to actually wanting to write a blog post is to decide your purpose for blogging.

Your purpose.

Is your brain hurting yet? Don’t worry, it isn’t that bad. It’s just that some people have blogs for professional or semi-professional reasons. My blog has many purposes.

Some people want to share a hobby, some a cultural or family history. Well things based on that culture.

Many like to explore writing. This one is greatly accommodated here in WordPress. There are many blogs with writing prompts you use and then link back to the original prompt and receive some visitors to your blog. Of course the Daily Post also has prompts. My Haiku Challenge is a Daily Post Event.

WordPress also holds Blogging 101 and 102 to help people get started. I personally found my own way to where I am. Personal interests will lead you to your topics.

If you like a topic then most likely there are others who do as well.

After Your Purpose.

If you are blogging for professional reasons, stick to that topic. People will be visiting you for that specific reason. As for a blog of whatever, much like mine, stay honest and real…you can’t go wrong. People will pick up on fake every time.

As for time?

You can speak more words in 5 minutes than you think. Just type. Don’t write to your audience…talk to them. You don’t have to entertain, simply share. You don’t have to have long posts. They can be no more than 300 words if you like. I did that for a time. I kept my posts under 300 words. It was an exercise in writing as much as it was in not having to write long posts.

I give a great deal of thought each day on achieving happiness. Actually thinking in great depth about something brings me happiness, so I guess I fulfill my quest for it each day.

Being able to devote copious amounts of time, and quiet time at that, I’ve wrestled the subject of contentment from many different sides.

To make a very long struggle short for the sake of your sanity and my strain in writing these days, I now give my oh-so-wise realization.

Determine the things that give you joy.

So often you are asked “What makes you happy?” and then, how often do you either struggle for an answer or allow your shoulders to sag and reply with, “I don’t…

A short message today, for obvious reasons to the usual suspect of reader friends.

Doing without is an experience we all say we wouldn’t wish on anyone. I was thinking about doing without my laptop, not in a drastic or tragic sort of way, but with how my mind works it rambled to other places.

Going hungry, sleeping in a car, going without the love of a parent. Sometimes those experiences allow you to understand others better. Those moments in your life humble you and ground you. No, I don’t wish anyone to go through those moments either.

But for those who have?

Embrace whatever the experience, no matter how difficult and use it to help others, even if that help is simply doing the hardest thing there is…being a friend.

Ronovan’s of Ronovan Writes has offered this week’s prompts of Rise and Save.

One of the most enduring symbolic actions of the French Revolution was the storming of the Bastille. The people of Paris nobly liberating the tragically prisoners trapped in this vile and noisome fortress. So complete was the destruction of this symbol of Royal oppression that not a stone remains. Then in July 1830 the Parisians again got all revolutionary and this column was put on top of the location where the Bastille stood to show the Parisians were revolting (again!).

How I can picture the iron gates of the Bastille being torn down and the poor, wrongly imprisoned scions of the people flooding out in their hundreds while the vile Aristos shuddered (quite rightly) in their gilded palaces.
