Choices – a Cinquain.

Choices

Buffets,

Food till you’re stuffed,

with salads and three soups,

Pizza, steak and even cheesecake.

So ill.

the options to make it work the best. Also, if time permits, I’ll even share those updates through my own facebook, blog page. Why if time permits? I’m working on a novel and really want to get it done. I know a lot of you feel my pain there.

Prompt and Suggested Inspiration

Now for a suggestion or prompt of what you can do for a #BeWoW post. My post is titled “A Haiku Perspective-Annette Rochelle Aben”. Okay so this one is a little different. The quote I will be using is a little bit selfish of me to do, it’s from her latest book that came out last week, A Haiku Perspective 2015. The idea for all of you would be to talk about a worth while project you know about that helps people. Perhaps one that is a little lesser known.

Not working for you? You might also visit my Haiku Challenge for some inspiration, although it’s a bit of a real challenge this week. Sometimes they are like that.

Comfort food? Maybe not.

“There is no more useful and rewarding exercise than to spend time in your own kitchen preparing your own meals.”-Ronovan
Last week I got to thinking about comfort foods. I’m not certain if that was because I’m on a no or at least very little processed foods nutrition lifestyle right now or not.
This past weekend I did an indulgence day and ate something, I can’t remember what, I know bread was involved and some sort of sweet.
Oh, I’ve stayed off sweets as well with this new lifestyle.
I’m glad I indulged.
I ate those foods Saturday and had a Diet Rite drink and very shortly afterwards my body was complaining. It didn’t like the chemically formulated drink, or the run to Google to research ingredient meanings processed foods.
The entire week I’d been on my new nutrition lifestyle I had no problems at all with anything. Well, except for maybe being a little hungry at times because my body was growing accustomed to a little less food and no bad foods it seemed to like before. Yep, IT was craving, and oddly, I was not. I was perfectly happy with my foods.
Of course I began to think about those comfort foods and how they are called ‘comfort’ foods. Yeah, they feel good going down and taste great. They give you emotional well being. And then, Boom!
“Part of the secret of a success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside.”-Mark Twain
I think that quote from old Sam somewhat says it like it is. Especially the last part. Our foods are fighting it out inside of us, but usually it is with us, not with each other.
Maya Angelou was pretty close with her thoughts on comfort food, especially for those of us in the South.
“The best comfort food will always be greens, cornbread, and fried chicken.”-Maya Angelou
I can still taste my Maw Maw’s fried chicken, you know the kind where you have the big cast iron skillet, a lid and she stands there making sure it all turns out just right. Taking each piece off at the right time, ’cause she knows not every part needs to cook the same amount of time.  And for a treat, the bacon grease from that morning was used instead of Crisco. If you’ve ever had that above combination, then you know at some point, not long afterwards, Mark Twain’s quote will inevitably come true.
If there is one celebrity in the world that could influence me to do anything it would have been Audrey Hepburn. Goddess of everything amazing. Well, she was that first classy, innocent but not woman I guess a lot of knew of, and actually believed from the movies. She wasn’t a sex kitten, or obvious, or even had the killer body of some of the time, and I think she proves what I consider about what sexy is. It’s what the woman has going on between the ears, that shows through her eyes and connects through your eyes and into your brain.
I do believe what Goddess Audrey says will be appreciated by a lot of people.
“Let’s face it, a nice creamy chocolate cake does a lot for a lot of people; it does for me.”-Audrey Hepburn
But again, Mark Twain wills out. Minor exceptions can be okay but beware. I think perhaps women don’t have as much problem with chocolate than men do for a reason. God gave the earth chocolate for women to enjoy, because God made the mistake of giving the earth man in the first place. Yes, it’s the one thing God may have gotten wrong the first time around and had to perfect the second time. The gloriousness that is woman was God’s do-over.
“There is no sincerer love than the love of food.”-George Bernard Shaw
This is perhaps my favorite quote here today. Notice the use of the word ‘food’. When you look at what you’re eating, is it food, or a science experiment prepackaged for ease of use? Did the person or team creating it where white lab coats or white aprons?
Don’t get me wrong, the stuff tastes good at times, but then you eat real, homemade food and you discover what Food is. When you eat a burger made at home and compare it to one made at McDonald’s you can see what I mean.
“But I need my salt because it’s a flavor enhancer.” If you need the food you are eating to be enhanced, then eat something else.
I know, there are times and situations that necessitate the eating of whatever is available, I’ve been there and I am not a food snob, Nazi. But if you can choose good, healthy, home cooked meals, then why not do it? If you can teach your kids now what food is, then why not do it?
“Get people back into the kitchen and combat the trend toward processed food and fast food.”-Andrew Weil

Making a Commitment to a Nutrition Lifestyle.

Time for a bit of motivating on this Monday. More for myself than anyone else. I have decided to try out the diet known as the Paleo Diet for my Fibromyalgia.  I’ll give more information about Paleo in another article. Now, at this time I want to stress a point. I am not, repeat not, going on a diet. Yes, I need to lose weight, but my goal in life is to be healthy on the inside. I have my reasons. Some obvious and some I like to keep to myself.

(oooo doesn’t that get you to wondering? No, I am not going to be an MMA fighter just so I can get up close and personal to Ronda Rousey. But then again. Hmmm. You might be able to twist my arm. Hahahahahaha. MMA jokes kill me. Well they actually could.)

Wow that was a total off the subject ramble. But it’s my blog and I’ll ramble if I want to. Taking a deep breath before I go off on song lyrics now.

image of healthy foods

I’m not dieting. What I am going to refer to this moving forward and I’ll be possibly doing something future with my journey in a book form if things go well is something I call a Nutrition Lifestyle. Diet is word that was never meant to represent a losing weight regimen.

Your diet is what you eat.

I believe it’s time we took that back.

I also think it’s time we took back our foods. Processed foods are killing us. With Paleo, I’m changing the title of that to Clean Food Nutrition, this means as natural food as possible, not being Nazi about it, but doing the best I can with the finances I have.

Have you ever looked at ground beef in the stores? For those outside of the USA ground beef is the kind of meat you would make a hamburger from or meatballs. Due to allergies in my home labels are studied thoroughly. You will find on some ground beef packaging that beef flavoring has been added.

The first time I read this I had no clue. After it was shown to the butcher he was shocked as well. After all, unless you are buying a roast and then having the butcher grind it up for you, which you can do, the ground beef comes to the stores prepackaged.

Many chickens and the various parts in the butcher area show having broth added.

Before Vegetarians and Vegans say just don’t eat meat, you then venture into the vegetable areas in the produce and you will unfortunately discover some produce are treated with a preservative in the fields without the store even knowing it. This happens with nuts as well. The bad part? The preservative is a natural product so it can be called all natural or organic.

Soy is organic. Soy is a huge problem these days as people are now developing allergies to it being in just about every food we eat.

For me, it’s not so bad. I can eat just about anything, technically, but I won’t. So we’ll see what happens, and I’ll keep everyone updated.

I’m also throwing some Yoga into the mix. I’ve tried some recently but it completely flared my Fibromyalgia so out of control that I’ve been, truthfully, scared to try it again. But what’s it gonna do, make me hurt more than a flare?

One last reason I have to do this is because medications I am on cause weight gain. I worked very hard to lose a lot of weight and then was put on the meds. Not all the weight is back, thank goodness, but I also can’t be put on Blood Pressure medicine because basically it drops my pressure too low and I have a chance of fainting and hitting my head, and having another concussion, that isn’t acceptable. I’ve fallen several times since that day two years ago and lost memory progress I had gained. No more concussions for me.

So for me, it’s life or death. And I mean that in many ways.

Much Respect-Much Love

The first reported case of deviled ham.

It’s early here. Especially early considering it is Thanksgiving Day in the United States. I have a blanket wrapped around my legs, the warmth makes the joints and bones feel decent. Who would have thought at my age I would need to be doing that? But then no one would have ever thought Mr. Human Heater would ever need a blanket.

So what am I thankful for today,

on this National Holiday?

I suppose I need to start with God,

and continue with that I at least still have a bod.

Family must be in the picture,

I hope that cranberry salad is of the right mixture.

Loved ones and smiling faces galore,

or the thoughts that I most adore.

Creativity and my imagination,

are two things needing appreciation.

Of course my friends here and there,

and those most loved everywhere.

You come upon a holiday and wonder what to write about. Do you write about the foods and traditions, which usually are the foods? The favorite deviled eggs. It’s a thanking God day and deviled eggs are one of Southern people’s favorites? Yes, my addled brain finds humor in that. It reminds me of a story my old pastor once told.

Jesus Restores Two Demon-Possessed Men

Matthew 8:28-34

28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 “What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”

30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”

32 He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.

What does that have to do with Thanksgiving? My old pastor and friend told the story from the Bible and was very serious as he looked out over the congregation in the church that Sunday and followed it up with  “And that is the first known record of Deviled Ham in history.

Yes, I am thankful for that friend who taught me to enjoy the Bible, find humor in life, and have an unshakeable faith.

A post today so random it had to be from me, Ronovan Writes. I write everything after all. But then when being thankful, is it really random if you are sharing what you are thankful for?

Proud to be?

Touchy subject time. Hot button issue. Politically Correct Stretch Alert.

Call it what you will but here I go . . .

Straight Talk with Ronovan

I’m not tuned into a lot of things. I don’t study the news. I don’t sit in front of a TV . . . ever. I scan headlines as my email is attempting to log in. Friends send me emails of things they want me to know about. I see the ads for things as my morning devotions load or a funny clip of a cat slowly progresses to the beginning of hilarious leap attempt fails. Slippery surfaces equals face plants felines! Just saying. (I really need to get a video of Spunky using the windshield of the car as a slide . . . intentionally doing so.)

On Twitter I noticed a trending thing. “Proud To Be Gay” Tim Cook . I don’t often click the trends, usually if it has to do with sports I might ‘IF’ it is of someone I have an interest in or if it is something I know a friend of mine might look at. Yes, I do like to attempt to keep up on things my friends like, sometimes, occasionally, okay–at times. So why did I click this one?

I had no idea who Tim Cook was.  I can hear it now, my blogging pal Hugh is like “Oh Ronovan, you had no idea who the Apple of my Apple Eye World was?” For those of you who don’t know who Hugh is, he is into everything Apple. He walks into a store and they already have the purchase ready and he didn’t even know he was planning to buy anything. His favorite celebrity child is Apple from that Coldplay guy and Iron Man’s girlfriend.

That’s pretty much it. I just wanted to see why it was particularly trend worthy why this person over another person announcing they are ‘Proud to be gay’.

Then I see it is the whole CEO of Apple and the millionaire thing. I see how it would be difficult to be open at that point in life what with all the consequences of losing a job and financial security. Yes, a touch of sarcasm there, but bear with me. I know there are friends and family to be concerned about and perhaps some public backlash against Apple to consider. I read why he did it and I admire him for it. He didn’t do it for himself but for others. I don’t think anyone should live in fear from others of what they are.

You are what you are, right? It’s a thing. Your thing. A nice gay person or a heterosexual A-Hole? Who would  you rather sit down to lunch with? I’ve had lunch with both, and lunch with the reverse. I’ll take the nice of whatever every time. And I will likely, and have, told off the pushy A-Hole of either kind when they go to far. And no, I did not use any profanity.

But back to where we began this aside, then I thought of the line workers in factories who are gay and afraid to ‘come out’ because if they do they might lose a livelihood they can’t afford to lose. Proud? Yes. Positioned to do anything about it? Not in their eyes.

I’ve worked with a lot of gay people over the years. I use the word gay because writing homosexual is just a very long word to type for me right now. To me, I like to think of gay as being what it was originally meant to be, happy.

Okay, another rabbit chased and now back on the main trail . . . again. I’ve decided to say what I am Proud of Being.

I am Proud to be a Man who loves God, Humans, The Female Species, Family, Friends, Children, Writing, and Great Foods. (The order varies at times. Sometimes Humans kind of fall down the list depending on the Human I am thinking of. And a great stir fry right about now, yes I am writing this during the morning, would be like better than all of the above, okay better than everything but that first one. Sorry Rhianna. Yeah, she may be weird and freaky at times, but you can’t deny she’s gorgeous. Wow, even I don’t know where that last one came from.)

OOO, I forgot, I love my Cats.

Now, I see no reason people can’t make public announcements of what they are Proud of.

Today, here in the comments, take a moment to say what you are Proud Of.

Because it’s Proud Friday here on RonovanWrites.

10 Things Men Think Women Think They MUST Know About Men

1o Things Men Think Women Know About Me

A list of things about what I believe is an easy thing to do. I was challenged by Florence T. to come up with a list of things we think women know about us. I of course never back down from a writing challenge. And yes, ladies, challenge me if you will.

I enjoyed this moment to delve into what I think men might think about this. Being a man it should be easy, but y’all may understand why there may be difficulties at times. These are not what I specifically thing about each subject, but I think people get tired of hearing my personal thoughts about things like this. But without any further rambling and to do, in  no particular order but number so I will not get lost I give you . . .

10 Things Men Think Women Think They MUST Know About Men

#1

What they MUST know:

We  ignore them EVERY time they talk unless the word SEX is mentioned.

man_ignoring_woman_bed_tv.jpg

Truth:

We don’t ignore. We are simply selective in what we acknowledge in having heard. Society has given us a way out. We are portrayed as buffoons on TV and in movies. We do not like this image but if we must suffer through it, then we will take advantage of it. And no, SEX is not the ONLY thing we acknowledge, Hamburgers, Nachos, Tacos, Pizza, and Steak also are worthy. And even for some none of these words will work.

#2

What they MUST know:

We  like women wearing tight fitting clothing or see through clothing.

too_tight_clothing.jpg

Truth:

There is a rare occasion that tight fitting clothing is something we prefer to see women in. I see women wearing things so tight that I wonder how blood circulates. Very few of them should have stepped out in this attire in the first place as the sizes are not only tight, but perhaps two sizes too small. As for the see through attire? We can see more going to a restaurant or walking through any Walmart. Style, grace, a nice fit, and something hinting at what is beneath are far more appealing.  Hinting by the nice fit and the moving of the body under the material.

#3

What they MUST know:

We  are Cuddling Machines.

man_asleep_after_sex.jpg

Truth:

We are not Cuddling Machines. Yes we do like to snuggle and cuddle at times, but this is referring to the after SEX moments. For me it is a fortunate thing if the blood pressure is not so great that my arteries do not scream at me. Muscles are trembling and every part of my body is aching from use. It has been the most enjoyable and most excruciating 5 minutes of my life. I cannot cuddle.

What they MUST know:

We  want to be examples of perfect health.

Truth:

We like salads. We like the grilled salmon over the fried oysters. Both of these statements are sometimes statements. As Cookie Monster says, “C is for Cookie and that’s good enough for me”. And to paraphrase what society has forced him to say, “Cauliflower is a sometimes food”. If you need more clarification please see the end of #1.

#5

What they MUST know:

We  want our foods perfectly organized on our plates . . . not touching.

buffet_plate.jpg

Truth:

This is some myth taught in  a class we males were not included in. If the food isn’t touching that means there is less of it. In fact we like most of our foods to touch as they taste better together. If we go to an all you can eat buffet our plates are layered like lasagna and you may find lasagna under the fried chicken and the fresh yeasty rolls, if the popcorn shrimp isn’t hiding it.

What they MUST know:

We  don’t care about what softness of toilet tissue we end up with.

strutting_bird.jpg

Truth:

Just because you can’t see us cry in the bathroom, the one we have been exiled to while using the sandpaper that seems to only be in the exiled bathroom does not, mean we don’t care. Men do not walk the way we do because we have different equipment below the belt line. We are trying not to cause ourselves to cry in public. Now you know where John Travolta got the strut from in Saturday Night Fever.

What they MUST know:

We  enjoy practical gifts for every gift occasion.

Truth:

We want toys. I need not go into this one any further.

#8

What they MUST know:

We  always want monkey SEX.

gazing_into_each_others_eyes.jpg

Truth:

We are not that animalistic . . . all the time. There are those days when we have been thinking about you all day long . . . through the hours of sitting in traffic to get home . . . and we are animalistic, but sometimes we actually prefer the slow moments of the connecting gazes.

#9

What they MUST know:

We  ALL know how to fix cars.

bad_mechanic.jpg

Truth:

My father knew better than to let me near a car. He used me as the free tire rotating service growing up. That was my job every few months on a Saturday. I was ‘learning’ how to change a tire. No I was ‘being used’ for free labor. That is about as far as it goes. Yes I can put oil in, and various other fluids, and even change a battery if need be. I am sure if I really had to I could do much more, I am intelligent and can read and follow instructions. But it is not a born with gift.

#10

What they MUST know:

We are all the jealous types.

Homey Don't Play That

Truth:

This is a bit serious. There are some ladies that will intentionally draw attention in order to make their Significant One jealous. We know this. Here are the things to keep in mind when doing this. If you have friends that do this, let them know.

1) If you make the wrong Significant One jealous, violence will occur

2) If you want to play that game, some of us will let you play it alone

Bonus

What they MUST know:

We don’t know how to use the washing machine.

washing_machine_drum_grill.jpg

Truth:

You know guys go to college and do their own laundry and often times end up with a fiance. Then what happens? Marriage and suddenly the wife decides the husband does not know how to wash clothes. Now this is not one I believe there is a complaint about. But I am putting it on the list because it is one of those things women MUST think they know about men.

I know much of the above is perhaps just my own opinions and in truth you can even turn some of them around and change the genders, especially with #10. But I accepted the challenge and I put some thought into it. I like to be funny with these lists but I also like there to be truth in each number I give so we can all share and learn. And perhaps even learn we are wrong, both you and me.

Ladies, are there things you think you know and want to know the real deal? Message me here, or if you want go to my About page and use that form, or email me at ronovanwrites@gmail.com, or even DM me on twitter @RonovanWrites. I really do mean it.

For next week each day I think will take Florence T up on the second challenge she offered up.

“Or what could be a ‘perfect’ balance between two persons in a relationship..not talking about equality here… ‘balance’! Did I just take the humor out of your post? Oops! :)”-Florence T

The Taste of Blah

The Taste of Blah

by: Ronovan

The Daily Post Postaday asked what taste would I give up. That’s easy.

I would give up the taste of Blah. I wouldn’t want to taste Blah any longer. You put that spoonful of something in your mouth and . . . Blah happens. Food is an experience to me. Satisfy the taste buds and you satisfy the human.

McDonald's Pink Slime

Taste a truly delicious home grilled steak, or stuffed squash blossoms, then go to McDonald’s. Blah happens. Oh you think it was good before, but then you realize it is all disguised pink mush Blah. Give me spice, give me life, give me truth. Do not give me MSG and fakery.

Blah. It’s not what’s for dinner.
