Authors: Let’s get started setting up your web presence.

Each day this week I will have an article about another piece to setup. I am not into doing everything at once in one article. We’re not in a hurry. Doing everything in one article makes people feel overwhelmed when all they really need to do is come back to that article the next day. So what I like to do is . . . one thing at a time. Call it the reasonable teacher in me. Yes, I was a History teacher and a corporate trainer type among other things.

Something important to remember as we begin this process together; I want you to know that I will be giving ADVICE here. Take it or leave it. After I give it you then make it work or not. Everything I or anyone else tells you won’t do miracles on its…

RonovanWrites Weekly #Photography #Haiku Challenge #18 Bottles&Light

photography_haiku_badge_autumn_2014

That’s right, a New Name and a New Badge for the Challenge!

Wordless just didn’t really fit what was trying to be done here. Sure, this is Haiku poetry without words but in truth I believe calling it Wordless Haiku almost handcuffed the creativity. So from this point on it’s going to be known as the;

Photography Haiku Challenge!

Yes, the first ever

PhotoKu!

#18

The rules are simple: For how to write a Haiku in English and using the 5/7/5 syllable pattern click here.

I prefer no words or numbers of any kind to appear in the images you use. This includes sign language . . . of any kind. I believe this forces one to be more creative.

Below is my original example of how to do a haiku with images. People have become a lot more creative with using their photography. This is just to show you a basic layout and give you an idea of how things might look. Check out our previous participants to see how it’s really done.

Visit Blog it or Lose it and Through the Eye of Bastet to see how you might can do this.

Moon Shadow of a Woman Tango DancersHeartbeat Stumbling Sign Man Falling Men Going in a BuildingHands in Shape of Heart Two arms with infinity tattoos

This is an example of one I created.

The Haiku was:

Moon Shadow Dancers

Heartbeats Stumble, falling in

Love Infinity

I know, not the best but it was better then the first one I posted.

Here’s the challenge;

  • You create your own Photography Haiku before Noon on the Sunday following the posting of this challenge,
  • Then either post a link in the comments here for everyone that visits to go see and/or ping back (copy the URL for this post into your Haiku post) to this post in your Haiku post.

I will read it and comment on it. Once I comment come get the badge.

If some of you would like a theme to prompt you what to begin thinking of you can perhaps use. . .

Bottles & Light

What do the words mean to you, and how can you connect the two words through that second line? You do not have to do the prompt, it is just a prompt to make you start thinking of things.

RonovanWrites Weekly #Haiku #Poetry Prompt Challenge #18 Stress&Hold

The 18th Haiku Prompt Challenge!

Badge provided by Me for this season.

ronovan_writes_haiku_prompt_badge_autumn_2014

For a refresher or how to write Haiku in English click here. But you can use whatever Haiku style you want to. As long as you, do a Haiku.

For Tips and Guidelines refreshers click here.

Something to keep in mind about a Haiku. Usually it is elemental in nature, but I don’t stick to that. There are two things I do like to see and they are; 1) Haiku that can be broken into two sentences with the middle line of the three lines being the commonly used part and 2) Opposite meanings in the first and last sentences.

Before you start!

I have links that will help you out. Remember for Haiku in English the total syllables are 5 for the first line, 7 for the second, and 5 for the last. I don’t really hold people to that for this but if you want to do it in the 5/7/5 manner, the traditional way, then try that. One link I have for you is . . . howmanysyllables.com. Simply type in the word and find out how many syllables it has. Also for synonyms and antonyms go to thesaurus.com, I find it useful for finding a word to fit the meaning when syllables are not working out right.

This weeks two words to use in some form, meaning you can use another word that means the same thing are:

Stress & Hold

My Example

Hold your tongue, you naive,

Lest my blade’s honed  edge be used,

Stress your purpose here.

DEADLINE: Noon on Sunday New York Time.

(I hate doing deadlines, but it takes quite a while to complete the rewind.)

There are now things called “A RONOVAN’S CHOICE!” which simply means a Haiku that either touched me or was a stand out Haiku in structure and meaning. Really each Haiku is a choice of mine so I feel a bit odd even having something called A RONOVAN’S CHOICE, but hey, it’s a thing, right?

Monday Morning Humor-Shortened Songs for ADD. Tim can say that.

This could alternately be called Shortened Songs for Today’s kids. I mean seriously, the attention span of kids today is about as long as it takes Mario to die from one of those freaking little turtles…tortoises, whatever the things with shells that walk on land. You tell the video game people they are wrong! Sorry, I had a moment there. Conniptions happen, you know? (You know people really shouldn’t use words they don’t know the meanings of. I am not sure really what a conniption is. Okay I just looked it up. I used it correctly. We’re good to go.)

RonovanWrites #17 #Haiku #Poetry Prompt Challenge Rewind Focus&Stray

The Big 17. That’s Correctamundo folks, here is the 17th Haiku Prompt Challenge Rewind.

Did you make it?

Did you not?

Did you enter?

Did you forgot?

It rhymed, so ignore the structure. But that’s right folks. To get into the Rewind all you had to do was write one and somehow let me know, either with a copy of your link in the comments or a ping back.

The prompt words were Focus & Stray.

ronovan_writes_haiku_prompt_badge_autumn_2014

I want to say something real quick. The Haiku Prompt Challenge is becoming like a little community of friends. With that in mind please follow each other wherever you are able to. Also check out each others site for the Haiku offerings as well. Each week I know what names I will see in the ‘likes’ and comments of each person. It’s kind of nice to have that reassurance that someone is out there, you know?

Now on with the show.

New to us this Week!

(Don’t you just love when new people show up?)

Michelle (Nato) Lunato of Chasing Life and Finding Dreams: Her Haiku today is The Pain of Love Gone Wrong. Everyone needs to check this one out. Especially if you’ve had a love gone astray. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE! I’m not really sure michelle_lunato_photographer.jpgwhich name she likes to go by, all of them are amazing names. I mean really, who does not like the name Michelle unless they have had evil encounters with one. Hmm. Memories are coming back to the amnesiac but I love all her names. And you have to love her blog name as well. From her About page; “My goal is to share my humorous stories from deployments and random thoughts on life (all in effort to work on my writing muscles). I hope to make people laugh, cry, and maybe, just maybe, realize they need to seize the moment. The world will never slow down and things may never be in a perfect place for you to start your dreams. ” She also has a photography blog; Michelle Lunato Photography. @michellelunato

Who reached the finish line first?

Ruth of Mad Meandering Me: Lost in thought… No that’s the name of her Haiku, not what happened to me just then. I gave her the Stop Watch Award for the first to enter this week. Now I might have to actually come up with an award. I think her offering really captured the heart of the matter.

Kimberly of K.S. Fause: A NaNoWriMo Haiku. Other than the threats of repercussions by Hugh against me, this was awesome. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE! Very much in the spirit of the month and the madness. @ksfause

A.C. of File Cabinet Ramblings: Thoughts Like Snowflakes. A very peaceful and almost meditative use of the prompts this week. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE! Also A.C. offered a second one titled Like Scattered Leaves after his thoughts had focused.

Becca of On Dragonfly Wings with Buttercup Tea: Focus Strays. I didn’t realize the prompt words made a title but that’s what Becca is here for, to teach me things.  I don’t think this was about hunting although rabbits were mentioned. @rgbickerstaff

Meredith’s Musings and the Angels Meredith and Martha: Meredith dedicated her two offerings this week to Nicholas the White and Writer’s Block. What to meet them? Go check it out. Martha’s offerings are called Lost and Found. @meredithlbl

Elizabeth of Tea & Paper: The Present is Now. People enjoyed this on her site and connected with it. I liked the use of a word in her Haiku and interpreted it my own way. Go check it out.

Carol of Mama Cormier: New Glasses and Lost. That’s right, two offerings. I just knew something would be good when I saw the ‘New Glasses’ title. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE! New Glasses, I tell you when someone needs them and is driving you places, it’s a religious experience. @carol_cormier

T.A. Wyatt of Finale to an Engrance: Lost Horizon: The Ambition Haiku. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE! I think this one says a lot. Also have you checked out this author’s books at Amazon? @finaletoanEntranc

Cyril of Cyril Bussiere: Till I Bloom. The only thing missing from this Haiku was a comment from Hugh about a bucket of ice water. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE! Also check out Cyril’s Books on Amazon. (And Hugh did a review of ‘Short Shorts‘ as well.) @CyrilBussiere

Kate of Dazzling Whimsy: I will use the one word comments by two of our own as the title for this one. Romantic Perfection. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE! @17katelee

Angie of Angie Does Until She Doesn’t: To The Beach! Okay so I named this one and the Haiku is actually more peaceful than this but hey, when you see the word beach you just have to exclaim it. @mrsreadmorbooks

Hugh of Hugh’s Views & News: SCORE! Yes, I named the Haiku this week. There are many ways you can interpret Hugh’s ‘sporting’ Haiku this week. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE! @RobertHughes05

Canaf of Faith Devotionals: Restless Mind. I think we can all relate to this one. Especially one who’s mind at times does not shut down at night.

Colleen of Silver Threading: Two Souls. Why Colleen doesn’t post her link in comments so all of you can go and see her I have no idea. Grrr! Love the Haiku. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE! @ColleenChesebro

Claudette of to search and to find happiness in every day: Your Hopeful Smile. A Haiku that sneaks up on you. Or it did me. It took a second read for me to get my own meaning from it. A good one. An enjoyable moment of reflection.

Marigold of Versus Bulb: Blinding Darkness. A story in three Haiku and a bit of information about the image used along with some humor added. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE!

Florence of Rambling On: Intent Attention. Another one Hugh missed with the cold bucket of water. @FTThum

Faith Unlocked: Return to the Fold. Great message as always. A RONOVAN’S CHOICE!  @FaithUnlocked

Battered Wife Seeking Better Life: Mischievous Grin. A lighthearted and fun one this week, although if I were certain people I might would be a big concerned. @BWseekingBL

Carolyn of Reviews & Recommendations: Up or Down? One look at the photo used here and you will fall out of your chair, off your bed, or off your rocker. Every week I always get reminded to call my mother about this time. Her name is Carolyn as well. I don’t always call though, she always thinks there must be something wrong. Well a call about me usually does mean something has happened.

I’ll close out this weeks rewind with a final Haiku.

From your lips sounds stray,

As the night continues on,

My focus is you.

Sunday Thought: Feed them Love.

For those of you not usually into reading my Sunday Thought, I encourage you to do so today because this one is about an article I read that . . . wow, I can’t even explain how whacked it is. Yes, I said whacked.

I normally use the Word of God for the Sunday Thought but today I am going to at least begin somewhere else. Who knows where it will lead. There will probably be some verses by the end but let’s start off with a bit about the article I read.

Fort Lauderdale, FL. What do you think of when you see those words? Beaches? Yeah. Homeless people? No. People getting arrested for feeding homeless people? No.

Unfortunately those answers are actually all ‘Yeah’.

This past week two pastors and a 90 year old man were arrested for feeding the homeless. Later in the week three more people, including a 17 year old were arrested. The last three might have been partially a protest action but they were still feeding the homeless.

I’ll be fair and give the cities’ response to all of the uproar going on.

“Contrary to reports, the city of Fort Lauderdale is not banning groups from feeding the homeless. We have established an outdoor food distribution ordinance to ensure the health, safety and welfare of our community. The ordinance does not prohibit feeding the homeless; it regulates the activity in order to ensure it is carried out in an appropriate, organized, clean and healthy manner.

While the ordinance regulates outdoor food distribution, it permits indoor food distribution to take place at houses of worship throughout the city. By allowing houses of worship to conduct this activity, the city is actually increasing the number of locations where the homeless can properly receive this service.”

So why am I writing about this? It would seem that from the cities response they have reasonable reasons. I admittedly thought of safety for the homeless if people tried to do things to the food they gave. The 90 year old man had been feeding them for 20 years.

Another thing is, most houses of worship would be open to feeding the homeless already and have a program in place if they wanted to have one. What has really happened is the decrease of locations by LIMITING them. I know my own church used to be the location for a program that fed the hungry and did other things and we also had our own food pantry where the hungry could come and get food. But we now donate to a collective location for people to go to. It does make it more available, perhaps, based on hours they are opened. I don’t really know.

Some homeless cannot go to places for help. Some have illnesses. Some have mental conditions that might make it difficult to be around people or large groups of people or approaching strangers. There is a mistrust, a feeling perhaps at times of not wanting it to be known to a lot of people that they are homeless. If I were homeless I would have problems right now with all of my medical problems walking the length of  a football field.

How do these people get help? I guess with the new ordinance they don’t. But they will. How can you keep someone from sharing a meal with another person? “Hey, brother, have a sandwich with me.”

After 20 years, I imagine some of those homeless people consider that 90 year old man as a friend. Can you not eat with a friend? Can you not help a friend?

A verse does come to mind. It’s one even those that have never opened a Bible will know.

Matthew 22:39

39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.

What the city is saying is, we love you but only if you come to a place we designate as a place we can show you we love you. Sorry Mayor, we know you are now homeless but we can’t give you this order of fries from McDonald’s because you aren’t at a designated area.

Yeah, I don’t want the homeless to be sick from bad food. Maybe that is why the ordinance was made or maybe it was created to discourage the homeless in their city. “You can’t get food easy here, so move on to another city that will help you easier cause your presence is discouraging the tourist trade.”

Whatever the reason, the results are not right. Those people are still hungry and there are still plenty to be fed. Unless you want to start running buses around your city, you might want to reconsider your idea.

Well, that’s about all this week. So what’s my Sunday Thought today? I think Jesus said it pretty well. “Love your neighbor as yourself.

Much Respect, Praying for You All

Be Gone and Be Well

I know the meaning of the words I write
What some give them seems so trite
My thoughts do roam around in my head
However my understanding is not dead

Are my words for someone I know
Or do they just go where they want to go
My mind may be one that becomes confuzzled
But for some others their reasoning I am befuddled

I cannot share my words in rhyme
Without facing anxieties time after time
Why do I not write poems with feelings
Because I am tired of questions and dealings

Gather from this that I am perfectly fine
I know what I know and I know what’s mine
Be on with the tiresome misinterpretations
Coincidences will only lead to creative constipations

Relationship Advice-Man phrasing.

For those reading today, please keep in mind there is a bit of humor in the truth of the situations I will be sharing.

Sometimes there are moments in a man’s life when he just doesn’t know what to say. Some of us know in those moments to do the obvious . . . shut up. And then there are the other 90% of our gender. It doesn’t matter who your partner is, the male brain still has this innate ability to say the wrong things, even after deep, deep consideration–for those two seconds before opening mouth.

” Are you ready?”

To many men reading today they are thinking “What’s wrong with that?” Your significant one has a brand new shirt on and you don’t know if that means ready or not. They are wearing their ‘around the house’ clothes and you don’t realize it. You have just admitted your lack of attention and you are also coming across as impatient.

The alternative?

“Do I need to get ready yet?”

or even better

“Give me a 10 minute warning for when I need to get ready.”

That’s right. Have your clothes ready or even already be ready and the only thing left are perhaps shoes or getting your keys and jacket/coat.

“What’s for dinner?”

Yeah, you did it that time. You are assuming they will be making dinner. Perhaps that isn’t what you meant, but that’s what you just said.

The alternative?

“What sounds good for dinner tonight?”

At this point suggestions are made and possibly a division of cooking assignments are volunteered for.

“Did you . . .”

I wont even finish that one. Anytime you begin a sentence, a question with “Did you”, a mistake has been made. You are now about to make an accusation of forgetfulness. I know, I know that is not what you were going after but that is what is heard. Be honest, don’t you feel that way when it is said to you?

The alternative?

Depending on what it is, check for yourself if whatever it is was done. If not something you can check on then tread lightly.

All I can say here is ask a question that depends on whatever it is having been done.  For example; perhaps you are planning a trip to the mountains and all that is being waited on is the car being serviced. You could go to the car and check to see if it has been, look for a receipt, or even call the place where it would have been done, but if you are still not that motivated then perhaps this will work for you;

“Do you want to go to the mountains this weekend?”

I was going to add, “before the leaves have fallen” but that would have implied pressure to have something done. In this day and age none of us wants that.

“Is that okay with you?

Seems harmless enough but it implies the “This is what I want and I expect you to agree” thing.

The alternative?

“What do you think?”

I know, you are opening up a huge range of possibilities, or just two that you care about. Your way or their way, which would be any other way but your own. Well that’s when you have to learn.

Just a few of those phrases I’ve learned over the years. Some might help. Put some variation in it or they will know what you are doing as you answer or speak the same way each time.

Tips For Gaining Twitter Friends

“Social Networking and the writer…phooey!”

“I’m an AUTHOR/BLOGGER not a PUBLICIST!

Yes, that’s what all of us really think about it because it takes away from our writing, but it’s a necessary evil these days, IF you want to intentionally bring people to your blog. You might be surprised about something though. I’ll tell you about that in a moment.

For now I want to talk about gaining followers on Twitter. I know everyone has a way to do it, but this is how I do it. Since I am writing the article, I get to write what I want to. Yeah, I’m being professional now. If you look at my Twitter numbers they are not huge, but I gain an average of 100 a week since I have started and I am not an active go out and get them type. I’m too busy writing.

Twitty Bird

First off, DON’T PAY for followers. I won’t comment on that any further. If you need me to do so then stop reading now and move on to some other article. Okay I will comment. You don’t pay for followers because they are usually one person with as many as 20,000 accounts. How do I know? I get the Direct Messages in Twitter asking me to buy their follows. I used to. They’ve stopped recently. How many out of that 20,000 followers will buy your book or go to your blog article? You got it, ONE. You want real people who want to follow you.

Why do you need Twitter followers?

This will expand your web presence and bring more people to your blog. Agents and Publishers like a web presence for their authors. The larger the expanse the greater your free advertising for your work and thus the better your chances of getting published. They Google you!

One thing some people will tell you is that when they look at their Twitter numbers for clicks on articles they post they don’t see much response. Some people won’t click a link to save their lives. They right click and open it in a new window or tab. That doesn’t register as a click or as a Twitter hit on your WP stats. How do I know? I’ve tested it. Yes, that’s the 11 years of Data Analysis guy coming out in me from a marketing background.

HOW TO GET FOLLOWERS

1.     Tweet your Blog articles properly

  • Make sure to use the proper hashtags. If you don’t know what a hashtag is it’s the # symbol followed by a word with no spaces. One to be sure to use is #Blogs. #Poetry #Haiku #WritingTips #WriteTips #MondayBlogs #SundayBlogShare are some I use. Simply go to the search field in the top right and type something and see what comes up, like #Friday and see what might matches up with a Friday thing you can use. For Authors you would use things like #Amazon #Kindle #BYNR #Books #Romance. I think you get the idea.
  • Include a bit of humor or something relevant, so it doesn’t look like you just did an automatic Tweet from your scheduled Blog post. One way to be humorous is with the hasthtags, like I will put how I am feeling at that moment, #FeelingConfuzzled or #IDidNotJustSayThat. It doesn’t mean people are going to search for those hashtags but people out there looking around will see that and just think it’s funny then click favorite or ReTweet (RT) you and then more people see you. Also you can do a little message or something that is kind of your trademark.

Hashtag

2.     Go to the hashtags in the Search Field that you are interested in and favorite things you like and even Follow people you find interesting. Some might follow you back. Only do this honestly. You can get crazy with it if you like if you are just after Followers but I wouldn’t recommend it.

3.     This is a fairly sneaky way to do it. People to follow if you just want a follower are people with about the same number of followers as followings. This means that they either auto follow back or they just do it themselves when they see it.

Fun Smiley

4.     Put content not from your blog in Tweets just for fun with one good hashtag that is popular and one personal hashtag that’s a bit funny or just your personality, like I mentioned earlier in the first suggestion.

5,     Have fun with it. Don’t take this too seriously expecting thousands or even hundreds of overnight Followers. Set a reasonable goal for yourself if you like, make it an average.

6.     Don’t get to crazy with it. Don’t go out and just start begging for people to Follow you or look desperate with your attempts at the humor. Just be yourself and let your personality do it for you.

7.     Get involved with hashtag wars. One way to let your personality out AND be crazy is in hashtag wars. Look for them in trends on the left hand side or watch your fellow writers’ Tweets. Hashtag wars are when you do something like “#BadBeatlesSongs Help Me I’ve Fallen And I Can’t Get Up” Help is the actual song and you add some crazy stuff to it. It gets you involved and people see you’re not just around for business.

8.     ReTweet or RT as they say things you like, especially other professionals. You can make lists inside your Twitter to put people into. I have different lists and one is for people that are good for RT purposes. These are people that have great writing tips, expressions, quotes, or articles I can RT to my Followers. Does it get me more Followers? I’ve seen some people RT my RT and then Follow me.

Free Kindle Books

9.     ReTweet or RT great advice from people or Free downloads such as e-books/kindle. I like to RT anytime I run across Free Kindle downloads. Does it get me Followers? I don’t know, but my Followers get a chance to see something they might not be looking for. Also I have ended up with favorites and thanks from the authors offering the free downloads and sometimes they will Follow knowing I do RT like I do. I of course Follow them back.

10.    Follow fellow bloggers on Twitter. This isn’t a method really but I often times like to ask a female if it’s okay for me to follow them on Twitter. I don’t want them thinking I am trying to be weird. Even if it’s available on their blog I just sometimes want to make sure depending on the articles I read from them. Some have content that signals they are open to whatever in followers. But some have blogs that I just feel like it is best to ask first. But with people that Follow your Blog take time to see if they have Twitter. Which reminds, me I need to do that soon.

11.    If you run upon a WordPress blogger on Twitter you like, follow them in Twitter and WP and mention it in a Tweet to them. Yes you want to be courteous. I am not sure courtesy is a method. It’s just what I like to do.

12.    Follow regional people from where you are or like the same team you like. This is a part of having fun and having a personal interest in Twitter outside of it just being business. Sometimes people with a shared connection like this can be your most faithful Followers, because they are not following you just because of a professional reason.

Love my computer13.    Keep your Followers. You are going to lose some Followers so don’t worry about it. Just net gain more than you lose. I like to try to RT and Favorite something from as many of my Followers as I can if I can that is. I don’t do it unless I actually like something though. If I don’t like it I don’t do it. My Twitter policy is based on honesty and courtesy. It is just like my WordPress Following policy. I won’t Follow you unless I like something I’ve read or I like your About page.

The surprising thing I mentioned earlier is how being limited to a certain number of characters challenges your writing. I write poetry, haiku, in Twitter and find it fun. Sometimes I even end up using those poems or thoughts for blog content.

Twitter also allows you to talk to your fellow bloggers freely without doing so on your blog replies. I sometimes will shoot a Direct Message to a friend of something I saw on their content that formatted wrong. Best of all you get to bond with your fellow bloggers.

Brighten Up Your Future In The Present

“Why not dream big? One way to cast your anchor into the future while improving your mood for the moment is to plan something exciting, something positive, something that makes you smile. Maybe it’s a vacation, maybe it’s a night out with someone special or maybe it’s just some much-needed “me” time/ Make a plan, set a date–and then bask in the anticipation.”

The Absolute Indie

If you ever thought about writing a book and publishing it, this is the one article you need to read. I am dead serious.

jorobinson176's avatarLit World Interviews

When I first decided to self-publish my books I had no intention of doing every little thing myself. I planned on paying for editing and formatting, and buying my cover designs. I had a rude awakening when I discovered that living in Zimbabwe, as I was at the time, meant that I had no access to PayPal, who sanction that country, and from what I could see back then, that was the only way to pay.

I had page numbers, headers and footers, indents and lots of other fancy bits and pieces in my original manuscript and no clue as to what formatting even meant. Seeing other writer’s beautiful covers all over, my heart sank because I knew that I could never create such things. It was the most frustrating feeling in the world until I discovered a few free resources that meant I could do it all myself. None…

Where have you gone?

It has been some time since we last flowed as one
Wrapping around one another
You reading my mind like a seer
My playful taunts pulling you further

Where have you been hiding yourself
I have been searching for so long
Did you find another
Did I do something wrong

I thought there were moments of your return
But they were mere shadows of a touch
My mind playing tricks on me
Wanting you too much

I am still waiting for you to come back to me
I struggle even now
These words I write
Tumble out but not from a happy brow

Yes, you are sorely missed
I need you to fill my mind
Without you here, my dear poetic pen
My release of thoughts I cannot find

Where has my poetry wandered?

All About That Base-No Rebels

Fight for that Mirror.

A mirror sounding
All too familiar to you
But this time you shout no
A shatter will not do

This time you are stronger
As you look at the tiny you
You understand what is happening
Unlike what happened to you

Nurturing and care to be given
To grow something amazing
Working and fighting
To keep those small eyes from glazing

The future is unlimited
For this little view
That mirror you heard
Will not shatter like you

Don’t back down
From those snotty uptights
This is your child
Stand up for their rights

Bragging and Ranting. How I came up with a Blog Post.

I wanted to write an article about a Blog Tip today. I thought I would play off of my “How to come up with a book idea” article from the LWI site and do “How to come up with a blog post” but the juices just didn’t flow in that direction and I’ve basically done things like that.

Instead I am going to simply brag a bit.

I am not overly boastful. Yes, I seem to  brag about being humble and not seeking attention. I am not sure how to exactly understand the boasting of that but I am sure that it is boasting somehow. Anyway, people may have noticed I haven’t done any announcements about number of followers or views in a while. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I think it’s fine when you do it to sincerely thank followers for achieving those milestones. I have a friend that does that. Most of us never even expected but a handful of people to ever even see what we post. I am still surprised people show up here. Sure some days are slimmer than others, and weeks are slimmer then other weeks.

So what am I going to brag about?

‘B’ the Athlete

My son. My boy ‘B’ is awesome! He recently started basketball, his first try at sports. He’s 10 and was walking into the gym and the high school head football coach saw him, looked him up and down and smiled. “Have you ever thought about playing football?” A humorous conversation followed. ‘B’ is approaching 5 feet tall and is 100 lbs. And he’s not a chubby kid. There was visible droolage on the coaches face.

I am proud of how ‘B’ acted during his first practice. He’s serious about it and wants to learn and do well and he’s a team player.

‘B’ the Scholar

‘B’ is smart. I’ve mentioned that before. How smart is he? I’ve never mentioned that. A package came to the house from his school. Apparently he has been selected by one of the top 100 Universities in the world to take part in their gifted student program.

People don’t know about that at school, as in the other students, but tonight he came home and said he is considered one of the nerds in school. I suppose that’s because he makes good grades and knows answers in classes. So what if he is 10 and blew the Science teacher away by not calling a ‘beneficial relationship’ between animals a beneficial relationship, the dumb down version of the high school answer and instead called it a symbiotic relationship. And what if he did give the example of said relationship as being the warthog and mongoose and so what if the teacher had to look it up and was blown away and made a big deal out of it. And so what if that is not the only time it’s happened.

‘B’ watches educational programSmart Boys . . . on his own. ‘B’ checks out non-fiction books from the library . . . on his own. Wonder where he likes that knowing facts from? So what if both his parents happened to have been gifted students. One thrived and was a Star Student. The other was told to kick back when transferring schools in the third grade until the rest of the class caught up and the month that took led to that parent checking out of caring about learning and didn’t care again until in their twenties.

What am I proud of?

I am proud that ‘B’ is still moving forward even though he’s misunderstood as teachers don’t know how to handle a gifted child that can do math in his head and does not understand why he has to show work in the way he doesn’t come up with the answer. People think a gifted child has it easy. No, a smart child can have it easy. A gifted child sometimes has to work twice as hard because he has to learn two ways of doing the same thing and he doesn’t get the help and support he needs.

I understand that students need to know certain things, but as a teacher I also believe and did this myself, as a teacher you pay attention and recognize how each student learns. Too much? I don’t want to hear it. I know it’s difficult, but if you only became a teacher because you want a couple of months off during the summer and you thought it would be an easy job, then go find something else and let the real teachers who love their subjects and have a desire to have a student understand and learn get the job you don’t deserve.

I don’t want anyone thinking I am talking about my son’s teachers. I am talking about things I have experienced and witnessed. The phone-in teachers who haven’t changed a test they give in 20 years.

Well, there is my brag and a rant. Now you know how to come up with a Blog Post. Start writing your life and see where it leads. You’ll end up finding out a lot about yourself along the way.

Much Respect

You are Worthy.

Ah, Spring is in the air . . . in Australia.

But I’m not in Australia. I’m in coldland. Notice I did not say Iceland, which is green nor Greenland which is ice. Yeah, I know, we all know the reason for the names. And they said my ancestors weren’t very bright. Hey, two sets of my ancestors found America before Columbus went island hopping and missed the big land mass to the west of his island disease spreading sexscapade. I’m good with it.

Today I thought I would discuss a little bit about self worth. You know, for a man who is basically unemployed and virtually disabled, I’m a busy thinking man. No, I can’t work hours and hours straight like a lot of people, but I get some things done as I can with writing. And perhaps none of it is pay worthy, but you know what? I don’t care.

You see we have worth. Some people are told they are not worth anything. Abusive spouses say it to their wives or husbands and abusive parents say it to their children. I have had to be held back from saying things in stores or quickly moved along because of something I have said for peoples fear I may have been over heard when I objected to certain words used toward children.

You know, when you’re a big man, you get away with saying things. When you’re a big man with a concussion and no impulse control over what you say, you can say anything and get away with it and back it up. No, I am not a violent man. I’ve never had to be. Look at me. I can get this really menacing look on my face. But I am actually harmless, just don’t tell anyone.

Some of you reading this know what I am talking about today. You’ve experienced it. You’ve been on the end of the abusive ‘you’re not worth a pile of…’ lecture. That can even be from an employer.

Every life has worth. I could go into my Bible and say that if God thought we were so worth arriving here as Jesus to live out a life susceptible to pain and hardships just like us and then die for our sins, then I will believe I am worth something and agree with God, but I’m not going to go into my Bible thing right now and say all of that. No siree uh uh.

I had an early life where if I had not been able to be taken out of it, I would have possibly been led down a life of believing I was not worthy of a good life. Abuse of various kinds early on, divorced parents, poverty, go on and on. But you know I didn’t know any of that until I was an adult. No one told me as a child I was not worthy, and no one has told me as an adult either.

Trolls can come out now and say what they like, I have my earplugs in due to my sound sensitivity so I won’t hear you. And I will just delete your comments if you have an issue with it. Yeah, Ron O Van don’t play that.

I want everyone to read this next series of sentences placing the emphasis on the all capitalized word each time.

I am worthy of good things.

i AM worthy of good things.

i am WORTHY of good things.

i am worthy OF good things.

i am worthy of GOOD things.

i am worthy of good THINGS.

Whenever you are going through a rough time, repeat that. No, it’s not a secret healing thing but it will remind you of something. I don’t think I need to tell you what that is at this point.

I go through this myself several times each day as I look at my situation and what it has caused, the troubles, the hardships. I know I am not really the cause of these things, but you can’t help feeling it sometimes. So you just have to remind yourself at times.

Positive thinking is not some mantra, guru thing. It’s a real thing. You have a defeatist attitude then you have a defeatist life.  No matter what you have planned for your life, be positive about it.

You can even believe it’s Spring when it’s really Autumn because it actually is somewhere in the world. But still take a jacket with you when you go out, because it gets a bit chilly, even in Spring.

Much Respect

RonovanWrites Weekly #Haiku Prompt Challenge #17 Focus & Stray

ronovan_writes_haiku_prompt_badge_autumn_2014Badge provided by Me for this time around.

The 17th Haiku Prompt Challenge!

Focus & Stray

My Example

The clouds last wisps stray,

As the wind sends them away,

My focus renews.

.
