Okay everyone, we’re going to freshen this up a bit. Actually we’re going to try to make this simple for you, the poets. Please read the post to see what changes have been made, or unmade. You’ll get the picture. Basically this has to do with the whole pingback or not thing. If you are a veteran member of the family you can look for the sections that are this color and that will give you an idea of what you need to know. I think there are three sections. Two are numbered and one is below that area.

Speaking of picture, if you’re new here, don’t freak out at the image below. I make a new one each week and this week I kind of was going for a much more complicated image and it was going to take forever. The words this week are Think and Fresh. So below we have a bright idea burning away the cobwebs of old, stale ideas. I like to get a little creative, or whatever you call that below.

Challenge 46

I created this challenge to have a place for people to share creativity and gain a little exposure to other readers they might not have otherwise AND of course to enjoy Haiku. We all have different people who visit our blogs, so this way we get to meet new people. Just so you know, this is a community. You will get to know the people here and make several new friends along the way.

First one to submit an entry gets reblogged here on Ronovan Writes. But go for quality, that’s the important part.

First of all, if you don’t know how to write a Haiku in English format, don’t worry, there are links below to articles I’ve written to show you how. Or you can click that link there. They are easier than you think. And to be honest, as for the challenge, I don’t really have rules for people sticking to formats unless it comes down to having to decide between two people for one of the Choices of the week. Choices are the winners, my selections, for one Serious and one Humorous Haiku each week that just gets me. But staying to formats does make you a better writer of Haiku. And with practice, it becomes second nature.

So you write a Haiku, what do you do with it?

You have the Haiku as a post on your blog.
Within that post you can put one of the two links you will find below under “Use One Of These Links in Your Blog”. Just copy and paste and make sure they are active/live. That’s called a pingback for one of them, but not the other. What’s a Pingback? How do you do it? Click here to find out how if you don’t know how.
If you don’t do the real pingback link, which will be called “Pingback Link” below, then make sure to put a link to your post in the comments of this Challenge post so we can all go read your Haiku. Either way is cool with me. Or you can do both.
The Challenge Post is published each Monday at 9 AM Eastern Time, or New York Time for those like me who get confused with all those easterns and stuff. Don’t know what your time zone is compared to New York Time? Click here for a Time Zone Map showing times as of right this moment.
You have until Noon Eastern New York Time Sunday to submit your Haiku. You may submit as many as you like, even multiple ones within the same post if you like. There is no limit.
Why submit? We have several members of the challenge family and they visit other members, also people visit the challenge specifically to see what people write, and I do a weekly review of each and every Haiku written and put that out Sunday afternoon or Monday morning, depending on how much time it takes. That Review then gets shared on Twitter. I do at times keep tweeting the Review until I have included every Twitter Handle of every Poet who has participated, but I don’t always do that these days as the number is beginning to get big. But sometimes I do anyway.

Note: If you do both a Pingback and a Comment with a link, you will at some point notice the pingback on the Challenge Post here will disappear. I’ll be doing that to make it easier for people to visit each of you and not click on the same person twice not realizing the pingback and comment link are the same person. 🙂 I can tell the difference but when you are casually reading, who wants to bother with that, right? But don’t worry, the link is still active/live in your post.

One easy way to read the Haiku from the Challenge Post comments area is to right click and open the link in a new tab or window. That way you don’t lose your place in the list and you don’t have to keep revisiting my blog. Yes, it would give me a lot more visits but I know all those visits are all of you reading each others Haiku anyway.

People like to try different ways of doing Haiku and below are links to how to do some different kinds if you are interested.

Haiku in English is the primary form for the challenge but you can use any of them. This is about being creative and pushing yourself to share a message or image in very few words.

There are TWO “CHOICE!” recipients each week. One for Humor and one for something more Serious. The Haiku are quite good each week and I am having to turn to the structure guidelines of a Haiku at times to help determine my selection.

Really each Haiku is a choice of mine, and I’m not just saying that, so I feel a bit odd even having something called A RONOVAN’S CHOICE, but hey, it’s a thing, right? And it does make it kind of fun.

Week #45 Haiku Challenge Review of the Words Pitch & Time.

A piece of advice. Although Ping Back are seen and may be clicked on by visitors to the weekly challenge post, I am seeing that comment links seem receive more visitors, at least for newer members of the challenge.

The Haiku: Time Stops. Nice one here, guys. Great structure. Two great images. The first and second could read as one or separate. Well worth a visit to say hi. As for that image of her profile picture. If she drew that, AWESOME! I am jealous. Unfortunately no Twitter Handle for this lady. Bummer that.

Runaway Nuns and Leprechauns: Yes, you read that right. Do we even have to go any further? I mean, can it get cooler than that title? “Runaway Nuns and Leprechauns… an odd name for a blog or what? We’d actually prefer it to be known as a peaceful, magical and mystical spot. It’s a spot where you can stop in for a daily dose of love and laughter sprinkled with a bit of chaos, confusion and lunacy. You can get great recipes and cooking tips, as well as drilling and building ideas. Who does that? Who knows their way around the kitchen and around the tool shed?”~From the About Page. (If you have difficulty reading the about page, just hilight it and it’s a lot clearer. Cool information. The Haiku: Pitch. Interesting. I like that use of time. There is a word in there that is cool.

My Sunday Thought: The Irish Vote.

I wrote about the vote in Ireland and same sex marriage for my Sunday Thought today and how I don’t agree with it. I let a friend read it and the question was put to me, “Will they read all of it to see what your point is?”

Let’s see what the answer is.

What to write about today? I think I want to talk about what happened in Ireland and their recent vote.

I don’t agree with it.

But why?

Uh oh. People gonna make assumptions. I see it coming already.

If that were here in the US and there was to be a Constitutional Amendment about marriage, I would definitely be against it.

But again, why?

Because I don’t think marriage should be a government thing at all.

Just blew some peoples assumptions.

The government controlling marriage of any kind simply gives them money here and taxation rights and a say over our lives and what is right or wrong. Honestly, I would be going after the businesses instead of after a marriage amendment. Oh wait, the insurance companies are the ones that really make ‘marriage’ an issue.

They dictate who can receive benefits and that depends on who is considered married. You know, the insurance companies could make that simpler. And really, governments should have no say over who is married or not.

You see, if the US wanted to have a marriage amendment for marriage being just man to woman, I wouldn’t vote for it either.

Some say they wouldn’t be voting for gay marriage but for civil rights. I guess some would say it is their civil right to be against same sex marriage. Would a person then vote for that person to have that right without calling them homophobic?

Some people say marriage is based from religion, some say it is from some governmental thing way back when. All based on point of view.

There are a lot of things that the government gets involved in that I think they should stay out of. Then there are the things they should get involved in they seem to ignore totally.

Here in the US each state has the right to have the people vote on marriage. It’s down to the people in the area and not people of other states determining what people thousands of miles away will have to live by. Even then I would still vote against any kind of state amendment regarding any type of marriage.

I’m a Christian. Duh, right? Well, I mean most of you know that already. That means I don’t force anything I believe on anyone. I can tell you about it, but if you don’t like it, that’s fine. I don’t want to pass a law that says everyone has to believe in God as I know Him. Or pass a law that says everyone should use the same translation of the Bible I use. Sorry KJ people, but I need to study in modern English to understand at times.

Oh, and if you run across a person that claims they are a Christian and says you have to believe as they do, don’t take them as an example of a follower of Jesus. Jesus said, as I have mentioned here before, shake the dust of that town off your feet and move on. Meaning, they believe what they want to believe.

Do I have a different solution to the government control over marriage? Sort of, but I need to work on it a little. But even then the government would get involved somehow.

I hope you read this all the way through and see I’m not homophobic. I think I am governmentophobic.

Jesus said give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s. In many aspects of life that is how I look at things. Sorry, but I nor marriage is Caesar’s.

Oh, and if you noticed earlier I said. “If that were here in the US and there was to be a Constitutional Amendment about marriage, I would definitely be against it. “ I didn’t say same sex marriage, I said marriage. I wonder how many of you caught that.

Love Connection. A #BeWoW and #1000Speak Poem.

Sometimes you need to lose a connection to find a connection. One you have may not be the one you need. Once that one is lost, or ended, a new one may enter your life. Connections come and go. Don’t dwell on the lost ones. Focus on the ones not yet made, or the one newly made that may have been the reason for your existence.

Always be open and aware of words and actions. Combined they can tell you the truth. If they conflict, so long. If they agree, then awesome.

Tomorrow is #BeWoW Day. How do you Connect?

Tomorrow is #BeWoW Wednesday, my weekly Twitter blogshare of positive posts. But it is also #1000Speak monthly link-up. So this week I thought to make it easy on all of us who do both I would make the topic the same Talk about how you connect.

Mine is already out. 5 Ways to Connect with Your Children.

An excerpt from my post.

“I look at a lot of problems today and I personally believe a lot of them could have been prevented if a good and healthy connection had been established and maintained between the parent and child. Notice I said a “good and healthy” connection.”

You don’t have to use that as your idea, but if you need an idea, there you have it.

All you need do is write a post, Tweet it with the hashtag of #BeWoW just as it appears there. It stands for Be Wonderful on Wednesday. The post needs to be about positivity, encouragement, motivation, or just something positive. This isn’t a spammer share where you tweet everything you have.

Also I will post my #BeWoW and if you want my Readers to possibly see yours, paste your link in the comments of mine and they might go visit. That will make certain I see them.

You may seem some other types of tweets in the #BeWoW hashtag but you’ll be able to tell which are which. It’s pretty simple.

5 Ways to Connect with Your Children #1000Speak

Connecting with people is something you have to work at. Okay, so it comes naturally for some people. This article is being written with the current 1000 Voices for Compassion theme of Connection in mind. Oddly it goes along with something I’ve been thinking of for some time now and carries over from something I wrote previously in my Let your Kids be them and not you.

I’m not a strong connector these days, and haven’t been for the past couple of years. I was prior to that but now I am more of a recluse. That being said, there are people you can’t and shouldn’t be a recluse from—Your Children.

I look at a lot of problems today and I personally believe a lot of them could have been prevented if a good and healthy connection had been established and maintained between the parent and child. Notice I said a “good and healthy” connection.

My son goes to school before I get up in the mornings. Often times I am asleep when he comes home. Chronic Fatigue is part of my Fibromyalgia so I really have no control over when I will drop off and sleeping problems mess things up as well. Thus, when I am with my son I need to make certain there is that connection. It may be only a look or a couple of words but there needs to be something positive and building going on.

5 Ways Parents Connect To Their Children

Be Less Self: I know you don’t think of yourself as begin selfish but when you consider that very often you are molding your child to be what you want them to be instead of what they should be, you are being selfish. This is in regards to utilization of talents and intellect. We should all try to mold our children into being good people, so don’t even think about going off on me about that.
Listen: Children like to talk, IF they have parents that like to listen. You may not like to listen—Pretend. Listen to your child and respond to them. Acknowledge you have heard what they said. Your child will grow in confidence, social abilities and even vocabulary.
Be Aware: Paying attention to your child will give you ideas and clues about their likes, dislikes, desires, goals, wishes. You will see where they thrive. I know my son. From the time he could stand and throw a ball, and I mean literally just that, he could throw a strike down the hallway to me. I knew then that baseball would be the sport he would thrive at. Did I push him to it? No. I personally wanted him to play football, but through the years I changed my mind. Knowing my son, I see that he likes to know what his assignment is, do his assigned task and still be a part of a team. Also he is not a very aggressive type physically. Football is out. Basketball? He’s tried it and it is mayhem at his age because other kids don’t do their assigned tasks on the team. But baseball? He is the starting outfielder his first year playing. I mean that as in they put him where they know a team hits to most. He is also the clean-up hitter. That means he is their power hitter. His first year playing. I also can pick out a book I know he will like. Why? Because he is like me and I’ve noticed it. He likes non-fiction books and will be watching a documentary on public television he turned to.
Patient: Here is a big one. Patience is a hard thing to be at times. But if you are a screamer, a yeller, you will not connect with your child. And if you are a physical punisher to a bit of the extreme, you will definitely not connect. I know that one personally. Kids do dumb things at times. You will think your kid is mature one moment and then do something completely their age the next and it will make you so mad. Just remember their age and take deep breaths and count to a million.
Affectionate: Here is another tough one, especially for a lot of men. Hug your child, no matter their age. Why? So you can teach them hugging and being affectionate is normal and a hug is a sign of love. Left on their own and without a role model, they will turn elsewhere. Hugging will turn into something not simply meant as a sign of love and affection for someone. Also words are signs of affection. Tell your child you love them. Tell them you are proud of them for random things. Or maybe say “That was awesome” to something random. Don’t reserve those words for good grades or athletic achievements.

Connecting with your child teaches them to connect with others and that takes care of a lot of things out there. You may not realize it but they are learning all those things you are doing, each of those five things I mentioned above, simply by observing what you are doing. They know you are listening, they know you are being patient.

By modeling for them these characteristics we are helping the future.

Welcome everyone to the Weekly Haiku Prompt Challenge. You may have found your way here through The Daily Post pages, the WordPress Reader, Twitter, Google+, or however you found us, we’re glad you came. I’m not just saying that. After you have been with us for a time you will realize we aren’t just a place to share a three line poem. We are a community of friends here. That doesn’t mean you have to talk to us. Just visit the various Haiku and click Like if you actually like something.

I created this challenge to have a place for people to share and gain a little exposure to other readers they might not have otherwise AND of course to enjoy Haiku. We all have different people who visit our blogs.

Provide your Twitter Handle IF you have one. I usually can get it from sharing your Haiku through your Twitter sharing button. If you have a Twitter and don’t have it linked to your account don’t worry you can still have the share option work with the handle. Click here to find out how to have your Twitter Handle show up in your share option. You know. I have a how-to article for just about everything. If not? Ask and I’ll write one. Also it is helpful if you have Google+ to follow me there by clicking here so I can include you on the Weekly Review when I post it there. I try to post it there but illness has been taking its toll lately, but hopefully you will see it there soon.

Don’t know what I mean by share options? The share options are those little buttons you have on your post where people can click and SHARE your post on Twitter or Google+ or Facebook or wherever else.

About commenting with your link to your post. I advise it. I think more people click the comment links. Yes, do a ping back, but do a comment link if you think about it. Go ahead and put your twitter handle in there. I think it’s a good idea for readers to follow you that are passing through.

Pitch & Time

My Example

I pitch you a curve,

When it’s To my advantage ,

Time will deliver.

I pitch you a curve when it’s to my advantage.

When it’s to my advantage time will deliver.

You do not have to include the sentences within your post, but it does help others understand how Haiku works if you do.

So you’ve written the Haiku and you’ve created the post. Now what?

You can put a the link of this post in your post and it should, I say should, do a ping back to this post and I and others should see it.
Or you may copy the link of your post, once it has been published, in the comments of this post. That’s a guarantee for it to be seen and I will be certain to include it in the Weekly Review.
Visit other people’s Haiku.
The deadline is Sunday by Noon EST. That’s New York City time.
Shortly after Noon EST the Weekly Review with the names of each blogger, their site names, the name of their Haiku and a link to that Haiku will be published, along with my thoughts, and the Twitter Handle of each person.
The Weekly Review is then Tweeted. The ‘Choices’ are tweeted with the first Tweet. I then continue to tweet, if able, the post until every person’s twitter handle has been mentioned.
I also Post the Weekly Review on Google+ with the Twitter Handles and if I am your friend on Google+ I include you there as well.

What’s a Ping Back?

A ping back is when you place the URL from the address bar of this post into the post you write your Haiku on. It will look something like this,

You also have to make certain the link is actually in there by clicking on the add link button which is next to the right alignment button for WordPress. There are TWO “CHOICE!” recipients each week. One for Humor and one for something more Serious. The Haiku are quite good each week and I am having to turn to the structure guidelines of a Haiku at times to help determine my selection.

Really each Haiku is a choice of mine, and I’m not just saying that, so I feel a bit odd even having something called A RONOVAN’S CHOICE, but hey, it’s a thing, right? And it does make it kind of fun.

Let your kids be them and not you.

I haven’t done a Sunday Thought in a while, in part due to a lack of energy. Okay, so it is all due to lack of energy, but today I figure why not. I’ll take a nap afterwards. 2 hours of sleep in the last 36 hours or so just doesn’t cut it.

So today I wanted to talk about something I care about a lot and that’s the encouragement of children. This won’t be a long one or a revelation one. It’s simple.

We look around today and see all the madness in America involving racial issues, violence, and all sorts of things. Some things are improving but a lot of things are worse or seem to be with the ease of reporting what’s happening now over how it was so many years ago.

I don’t tell my son to go out and treat people a certain way. In fact it rarely comes up. The only time it does is when there are bullies at school. Bullies are a bit silly when it comes to my son. If my son ever really wanted to deal with one in a physical way, the bully would be hurting for a while, but physical isn’t my boy “B”s first thought. Just like it’s never been mine. For me it may be a day later before the slow burn gets to me and I wish I had done this or that, but in truth wouldn’t have anyway.

I’m proud of what my son has accomplished this year in school. He’s one of only two kids in his grade to be recognized and accepted into an academically gifted student talent search program by one of the top universities in the country and the world. He’s 10. He said the other students looked at him kind of strange when he walked down the hall after Honor’s Day and it was announced to the school. I think maybe he just was noticing something that wasn’t there. But I told him to be proud of it.

My focus with my son is on him being him. And the beset whatever him that means. He and I share a lot of the same characteristics and interests but I consciously make an effort not to put my wishes on him. He’s turning out to be better than I was, if not a little more headstrong than I was. Stubborn? Imagine that.

I thought I would share a picture of “B” today. No, not an actual photo but my portrait from a photo taken at Honor’s Day with his ribbon showing his acceptance into the program. I missed the program. The email came out the night before at a time no one checks their email. But the school takes pictures and puts them up for all of us to see. So here you are. Now you sort of know what B looks like.

For those of you wondering, the character in the center is my creation for the word Lovers. The previous weeks was a Chinese character that meant love or could be lovers, but I chose not to reuse, and created my own instead. No, not a bunny ears thing, that’s a pair of lovers with their heads on the shoulder of the other and forming a heart of sorts. You can figure out the rest for yourself.
